Johnson Space Cente_ Houston,Texas77058 AC 713 483-Silt I Kay Ebel i ng For Release RELEASE NO: 79-01 January 15, 1979 The life of electric fuel cells on the Space Shuttle has increased from 700 to 5,000 hours as a result of an invention by Hoyt McBryar, former Chatta- nooga area resident and graduate of the University of Georgia at Athens. The invention reprocesses asbestos so fibers are distributed evenly, making the material uniformly strong. The asbestos matrix contains the electroyte for conversion of chemical energy into electricity in Space Shuttle fuel cells. "We used ordinary kitchen equipment to do it," McBryar said, describing his work in 1972, when fuel cell life was short due to weak spots in the elec- trolyte holder. He and fellow lab workers tore sheets of asbestos into one-inch squares and put them in a kitchen blender with alcohol. They poured the result- ing "slurry" through a filter box. The product was a mat of asbestos fibers at random orientation, which they dried and trimmed and put to work as an electro- lyte holder. In December, NASA's Inventions and Contributions Board awarded McBryar $2,500 for the invention. The board originally recognized McBryars contribu- tion in 1973. Since then, Rockwell International has selected an electrical power system for the Space Shuttle Orbiter that uses McBryar's asbestos- structured electrolyte holder. The invention contributes to the reusability of the Space Shuttle which is set for its first launch at the end of 1979. McBryar, a 20-year NASA employee, was raised in the Chattanooga area and his father, Lewis McBryar, is a resident of Trenton, Georgia. Hoyt McBryar re- ceived his B.S. in 1959 and M.S. in 1961, both in Chemistry. He is currently an electrochemist at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, responsible for develop- ment of electrochemical energy conversion and storage concepts for manned space- craft, and for orbiting power platforms for future use in space. ### News National Aeronaubcs and Space Adm_mstralJon Lyndon B. There will be no accreditation or badging of newsmen at Johnson Space Center. ### News NationalAeronauticsand SpaceAdmln_slratton Lyndon B.Johnson Space Center Houston.Texas77058 AC713 483-5111 Charles Redmond For Release RELEASE NO: 79-03 February 1, 1979 SKYLAB FLIGHT CONTROL ACTIVITIES TO BE REDUCED Flight controllers at the Johnson Space Center will cease round- the-clock monitoring activities for the space station Skylab on Friday, February 2. This decision follows earlier decisions to abandon reboost/ deorbit attempts using the Space Shuttle. Flight controllers will instead monitor the Skylab during one eight-hour shift, five days a week. I'Theweekly schedule will be arranged so that Skylab monitoring includes one day during the weekend to preclude a two-day absence of coverage," said Charles Harlan, chief of the Payloads Operations Division at the space center. On Thursday, January 25, flight controllers maneuvered the 78.5 ton space station from a minimum-drag orbital position to one where the space station's solar panels constantly track the Sun. This maneuver was carried out to prepare the Skylab for possible "last chance" maneuver just prior to the craft's reentry. "The Sun-facing attitude will take less flight control effort to maintain," Harlan said. - more - Release no: 79-03 Page 2 Repositioningthe Skylab from the minimum drag orbital position will also speed up the decay of the vehicle'sorbit. Present estimates now place reentry sometimebetween June and August of this year. The space agency has been studyingways to alter the reentry path of the space station,althoughviews differ among agency experts as to the degree of active control which might be effectedjust prior to reentry.

    Information Summaries National Aeronautics and Space Administration JULY 2003 NP-2003-07-008JSC Astronaut Fact Book “Once you get to Earth orbit, you're halfway to anywhere in the solar system." -- Robert Heinlein JULY 2003 PREFACE The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) selected the first group of astronauts in 1959. From 500 candidates having the required jet aircraft flight experience and engineering training as well as height below 5 feet 11 inches, 7 military men became the Nation's first astronauts. The second and third groups chosen included civilians who had extensive flying experience. By 1964, requirements had changed, and emphasis was placed on academic qualifications; in 1965, 6 scientist astronauts were selected from a group of 400 applicants who had a Doctorate or equivalent experience in the natural sciences, medicine, or engineering. The group named in 1978 was the first of space shuttle flight crews and since then, 8 additional groups have been selected with a mix of pilots and mission specialists. There are currently 108 astronauts and 36 management astronauts in the program; 133 astronauts have retired or resigned; and 35 are deceased. Though most of the information in this document pertains only to U.S. Astronauts, several sections are included to provide information about the international astronauts and Russian trained Cosmonauts who are currently partners with the U.S. Space Program participating in the International Space Station endeavor. The non-U.S. information presented here was gathered from the biographies provided by the various space agencies with which these individuals are affiliated. Payload specialists are career scientists or engineers selected by their employer or country for their expertise in conducting a specific experiment or commercial venture on a space shuttle mission.

Dawes Archive Biography: Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951), prominent in U.S. politics and business, served as Comptroller of the Currency (1898-1901), director of the Military Board of Allied Supply (1918-1919), and first director of the Bureau of the Budget (1921). He received a Nobel Peace Prize as chairman of the Reparations Commission which restructured Germany's economy and devised a repayment plan (1924). He was elected Vice-President (1925- 1929), and appointed ambassador to England (1929-1931) and chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (1932). Charles and his brothers founded Dawes Brothers Incorporated. Dawes formed the Central Trust Co. in Chicago (1902), guided its successor banks, and was influential in Chicago business, politics, and philanthropy until his death. Charles Gates Dawes was born and educated in Ohio. He married Caro Blymyer in 1889, practiced law, and incorporated a real estate business in Lincoln, Nebraska, before moving to Evanston, Illinois in 1895. He acquired utility companies and real estate in northern Illinois and Wisconsin; and in 1908, with his brothers Henry, Rufus, and Beman, formed Dawes Brothers Incorporated, to invest assets in banks, oil companies and real estate throughout the country. Various acquaintances who were prominent in political and industrial affairs trusted them to manage their investments as well. Other companies in which Charles Dawes and his brothers played leading roles included Chicago's Central Trust Co. and its successor banks and Pure Oil Company of Ohio. Dawes made significant philanthropic contributions to the Chicago metropolitan community.

NASA ASTRONAUT (FORMER) PERSONAL DATA: Born in New York, New York, on December 23, 1937. Married to the former Dianne Welsh of Denver, Colorado. They have a daughter, Michelle and a son, Paul. EDUCATION: Graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, Bachelor of Science from the Air Force Academy in 1959 and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1970. SPECIAL HONORS: Awarded three NASA Space Flight Medals, two NASA Exceptional Service Medals and six JSC Group Achievement Awards; presented the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross and two Meritorious Service Medals (1970 and 1979). He also received the Air Force Academy Jabara Award for Airmanship in 1983. He was inducted into the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Hall of Fame in 1999, the Cradle of Aviation Museum in 2009, and the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2011. He received a Heritage Recognition from the National Reconnaissance Office in 2019. He is a Distinguished Member of the Association of Space Explorers and an Associate Fellow in the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. A former President of the U.S. Chapter of the Association of Space Explorers, Bobko serves on the ASE Board of Directors. EXPERIENCE: Bobko, an Air Force Colonel, was a member of the first graduating class of the Air Force Academy. Subsequent to receiving his commission and navigator rating, he attended pilot training at Bartow Air Base, Florida, and Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma.
