THE ARMENIAN CATHEDRAL OF SOURP ASDVADZADZIN (THEOTOKOS) IN STROVOLOS, NICOSIA research-text: Alexander-Michael Hadjilyra The Armenian cathedral of Sourp Asdvadzadzin (Theotokos) in Strovolos, Nicosia, next to Nareg School, the Prelature and the Armenian Genocide monument, is the centre of Armenian-Cypriot religious and community life, a meeting place of local and foreign Armenians, even Armenians and non-Armenians. It is a powerful symbol of this community and it serves as a living reminder of its mediaeval predecessor in walled Nicosia. Following the 1963-1964 intercommunal troubles, Armenian-Cypriots of Nicosia lost not only their homes and businesses, but also their church, Prelature, school and clubs. Thanks to Archbishop Makarios III, the small Ayios Dhometios chapel was used for the community’s religious needs as of early 1964; for large Liturgies, the nearby church of Saint George (1964-1969) or the Anglican cathedral of Saint Paul (1969-1981) or Nareg’s auditorium (1972-1981) were used. In the mean time, the community was trying to get back on its feet and eventually managed to build a new school, church, Prelature and Genocide monument. The issue of the school building was settled relatively quickly: the land was given to the community in trust by the government in 1966 thanks to the efforts of Representative Berge Tilbian, while the actual building was erected on Cyclops street between 1971- 1972, thanks to the efforts of Representative Dr. Antranik L. Ashdjian and funding from the Ministry of Education. However, the issue of the church was a different matter: between 1973-1974, the government had proposed various hali lands (government- owned uncultivated lands), abundant in the Acropolis area, but the Ethnarchy and particularly der Vazken Sandrouni felt the need to have the church next to the school. -

Still Anti-Asian? Anti-Chinese? One Nation policies on Asian immigration and multiculturalism 仍然反亚裔?反华裔? 一国党针对亚裔移民和多元文化 的政策 Is Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party anti-Asian? Just how much has One Nation changed since Pauline Hanson first sat in the Australian Parliament two decades ago? This report reviews One Nation’s statements of the 1990s and the current policies of the party. It concludes that One Nation’s broad policies on immigration and multiculturalism remain essentially unchanged. Anti-Asian sentiments remain at One Nation’s core. Continuity in One Nation policy is reinforced by the party’s connections with anti-Asian immigration campaigners from the extreme right of Australian politics. Anti-Chinese thinking is a persistent sub-text in One Nation’s thinking and policy positions. Karolina Pawłowska: Ethnic return of Armenian Americans: Perspectives Ethnic return of Armenian Americans: Per- spectives Karolina Pawłowska University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznan, [email protected] Abstract The field research conducted among the very few Armenian Americans who have moved to Armenia showed that the phenomena of migration of the diaspora of Armenians to Armenia holds great potential both as a theoretical issue within migration studies and potentially a social phenomenon, as Armenian Americans differ from other migrants and expats in Armenia, because they carry stereotyped pre-images of that land that influence their expectations toward their future lives there. Field research conducted in Armenia in 2012 shows that the disillusionment that repatriation brings causes internal tensions and identity crises, eventually forcing migrants to redefine their role in Armenia in the frame- work of their contribution to the development of their homeland, often isolating them from local Armenians through diaspora practices and maintaining the symbolic boundary between these two groups of Armenians in Armenia. Kaifi, Franklin University, USA Wajma Aslami, Saint Mary‟s College, USA ABSTRACT Ethnic and religious diversity is part of each society in the modern world and being an Afghan is another dimension of these differences in the United States. The research question for this study was to see if Afghan-Americans are experiencing more discriminatory practices as a result of the 9/11 events. The results of 502 Afghan-Americans demonstrated that they do report more discrimination in the post-9/11 era. Specifically, Afghan men have experienced more discrimination in the workplace and Afghan women have experienced more discrimination in public. Implications and recommendations are offered for effective diversity management. Keywords: Afghan-Americans, Afghanistan, 9/11, discrimination, USA, leadership INTRODUCTION n the years after September 11, 2001, there have been many reported incidents of discrimination, hostility, and even extreme violence towards Muslims and people who look Muslim. “Nearly three out of four Muslims knew someone who had experienced religious prejudice since 9/11 or had suffered abuse Ithemselves. Many American Muslims have doubts about whether they are accepted as real Americans” (Barrett, 2006, p. 6). Findley (2001) reports, “In recent years, mosques were the target of arsonist in Yuba City, California, Springfield, Illinois, Greenville, South Carolina, and Minneapolis, and vandalism has occurred at mosques in Michigan, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Georgia” (p. 61). Muslims have dealt with arson, intimidation, and the media spreading inaccurate reports about Islam. -

The Puerto Rican Cultural Exception When Gabriel García Márquez visited Puerto Rico recently, someone asked him why he had never written about the island. The Colombian Nobel Prize winning novelist smiled and paused for a second before responding. “If I told the truth about Puerto Rico,” he explained, “everyone would say I was making it up.”1 Indeed, the Puerto Rican experience is in many ways too outlandish , even for magical realism. Despite being a territory of the world’s largest exporter of democratic rhetoric, Puerto Rico does not function as a true democracy. In the 1960s and 1970s, minors from Indochina were resettled in the United States. In the 1970s, the U.S accepted 14,000 unaccompanied minors from Cuba through Operation Peter Pan. Many of these Cuban minors, aged five to eighteen, were sent to the United States by parents fearing their children would be indoctrinated in communist schools. In the case of these minors, they arrived in the United States with the consent of their still-living family members. In contrast, about 3,500 Sudanese Lost Boys were resettled in the United States in 2000, and more recently in 2010, 53 “lost children” from Haiti were brought to the United States following a devastating earthquake. This study investigated the integration and assimilation patterns of the Sudanese Lost Boys in the Kansas City area with the purpose of understanding the sociological impact on these Boys from their own perspective. As opposed to previous studies done on these Boys in Kansas and other areas in the United States, the present study used interview-based research and analyzed data using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
