Hair and flair at the PIWC’s 20th anniversary fundraiser

he Phuket International Womens Club (PIWC) annual fundraiser last weekend was a smash hit. Partygoers got into the groove with disco dance beats from the T60s, 70s and 80s, dished up live by five-piece Filipino band Rhythm Box Machine. The psychedelic ‘20 Years and Still Rocking’ theme was a fun-filled departure from the usual penguin suits and ball gowns of previous years and was this year held at Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort. PIWC Events Co-ordinator Carol Dux said the enthusias- tic participation in the club’s 20th anniversary celebration surpassed everyone’s expectations. “A very good time was had by all and many local children will continue to benefit from the generous contributions made to the PIWC’s ongoing scholarship program,” she said. elcome to the twelfth in the series of Tai Chi Timeouts. Each timeout takes you W through a single, easy-to-follow Tai Chi- Chi Gung exercise. One of the aims of Tai Chi is to develop the intrinsic energy (Chi) within the body through slow, rhythmical breathing exercises known as Chi Gung. The ancient martial art exercises naturally relieve tension from stress as well as aches and pains from stiff limbs. Perform them whenever you wish to unwind and loosen up. They are particularly beneficial in the early morning when the Chi is especially light and clean, relaxing and energizing both the mind and body for a new day. This particular exercise (illustrated left) is known as ‘Rolling the Ball’. Keeping your balance centered in your hips, hold your hands loosely around a large imaginary ball at chest level, positioning them in a horizontal line on opposite sides of the ball. Commence the exercise by slowly turning your body through the hips to the right, holding your hands around the ball. When you have turned approximately 45 degrees to the left, smoothly roll the ball with the right hand on top and the left hand on the bottom. Turn the body back to the front, extending the right hand forward and allowing the left hand to roll down. Next, continue the movement by turning the body through the hips to the left, smoothly rolling the ball until the left hand is on top and the right hand on the bottom. For the complete exercise, continue turning left and right while smoothly changing the hands. Join the movements with a continuous flowing motion to gain added flexibility and range of movement in the shoulders, hips and lower back. Sequence

Step 1 (Photo1): Place your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, with your hips tucked gently underneath the spine (back straight). Relax your shoulders and hold your head up, keeping your neck relaxed. Place your hands over your Tan Tien (solar plexus) and breathe calmly through your nose.

Step 2 (Photo 2): Keeping your balance centered in your hips, hold your hands loosely around a large imaginary ball at chest level, posi- tioning them in a horizontal line on opposite sides of the ball.

Step 3 (Photo 3): Next, turn your body through the hips to the right while smoothly rolling the ball over until the right hand rolls on top and the left hand rolls to the bottom.

Step 4 (Photo 4): Then turn the body through the hips back to the center. Smoothly extend the right hand forward and allow the left hand to roll down.

Step 5 (Photo 5): Continue to turn the body through the hips to the left while rolling the ball over with the left hand on top and the right hand on the bottom.

Step 6 (Photo 6): Once the body has turned 45 degrees to the left, begin to turn through the hips back to the center while smoothly extending the left hand and allowing the right hand to roll down.

Step 7 (Photo 7): Repeat the exercise by turning to the left and right while smoothly changing your hands and rolling the ball. The exercise should be performed as smoothly, softly and as relaxed as possible.

Step 8 (Photo 8): To complete the exercise, slowly bring the hand to the center of the body then back to the Tan Tien. Gather the Chi within.

The first of its kind in Thailand, the initiative is a sensible and long overdue attempt to deal with Phuket’s waste management crisis. With each passing day, approximately 300 tonnes of additional waste – about 20 percent of it plastic – piles up at the landfill around the incinerator at Saphan Hin. Phuket sells itself as a tropical paradise of sea, sun and sand, but long-suffering residents of nearby Ban Saphan Hin community would be quick to add a fourth ‘s’ to the list – stench. Also affected are nearby schools and government offices, not to mention the island’s largest and most popular public park.
