Letter from the President “The First Four Months: Traveling Idaho”

The past four months have opportunity to meet many ICF members and been most exciting and representatives of Eastern Idaho nonprofits that evening. rewarding for Leslee and me In September we split time between Boise and Idaho as we have traveled across Falls with a couple of side trips to Coeur d’Alene and the state for the Idaho Sandpoint. We attended ICF’s Eastern Region grant Community Foundation. award events in Bannock, Bonneville, Franklin, Custer, Even before I actually began the new job, I visited and Lemhi Counties, the opening of the Lincoln Board members and others in Eastern Idaho in June. Exhibition at the of Idaho in Idaho Falls (A That visit took me to Bonneville, Bingham, Bannock, MUST SEE), visits with many ICF fund managers, and Franklin, and Bear Lake Counties. It was a gorgeous time of year to be traveling there as the spring had been quite wet and mountains and valleys beautifully green. In the first week of our new assignment in mid-July, former Chair of the ICF Board Duane Jacklin and his wife Susan hosted an evening at the Hayden Lake Country Club to introduce Leslee and me to ICF members and others from the area. They also hosted an ICF Kootenai County Awards luncheon at the Post Falls Arts Center named for them. We attended ICF award functions in Priest River and Naples as well. On my way to Boise I attended an ICF Awards Reception in Grangeville. Thus, by the end of the first week we had visited Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai, Benewah, Latah, Nez Perce and Lewis Counties and missed only Shoshone and Clearwater Counties of North Idaho. In late July and early August we were in Boise getting to know the ICF staff and visiting with Treasure Valley members. In early August we were on the road again to Sun Valley and our first ICF Board meeting along with a donor reception in Ketchum. While there we also visited with additional ICF members, friends and nonprofits and had dinner with John Fery and his wife, son, and daughter-in-law (current Board member Sandy Fery) and Alice and Tom Hennessey. It was a great opportunity to learn about ICF. No one knows more about the ICF origins and history than Alice and John. They have been most helpful. Following the events in the Wood River Valley we were on to Eastern Idaho and Idaho Falls. Current and past ICF Board members Mary Lynn and Ralph Hartwell hosted a welcoming reception for us. We had the

3 ICF’s Regional Panel Members Enriching the Quality of Life Throughout Idaho

The regional panel members of the Idaho Community Foundation have no easy job. Once a year, they spend long hours reading grant applications from organizations in their region, conducting phone calls and making site visits for additional information, and finally coming together to make the tough recommendations on where available funds should be allocated. During its 2009 regional grant cycles, the Idaho Community Foundation received over 521 applications requesting more than $2 million in funding. Focused on ICF’s mission of enriching the quality of life throughout Idaho and taking into consideration the needs of the communities they each represent, the panel members work together, share insights and information, and (hours later) finalize their recommendations. Based on the hard-earned recommendations of Idaho Diabetes Youth Program received $2,052 to fund these knowledgeable panel members, ICF’s Board scholarships for Eastern Idaho youth to attend a summer of Directors approved distributions totaling over camp designed to support and educate campers with $520,000 to 278 organizations throughout Idaho. insulin-dependent diabetes. Funds have been approved to support a range of organizations from libraries and to food banks and senior centers. Here are just a few examples: • $4,000 to the Idaho Foodbank Warehouse to partially underwrite the cost of purchasing and transporting weekend meals to chronically hungry children in the Treasure Valley who participate in the Backpack Program • $2,500 to the Festival Dance and Performing Arts Association, Inc. in Moscow to provide four thousand 3rd - 6th grade students with dance and music enrichment programs at 20 schools, including mostly rural and two reservation schools • $4,200 to the Caribou County Senior Center, Inc. to buy a convection oven and a counter- top mixer for their kitchen For additional information on our grant cycles and dedicated panel members, please visit our St. Mary’s Hospital in Cottonwood received a $5,000 grant for much needed medical equipment. website at www.idcomfdn.org and read the press releases for each regional grant cycle.
