Message from Mr Yusuf Seedat Islamiyah Girls High School Independent and Non-Selective Message from Mr Yusuf Seedat, The Head Teacher of Islamiyah School Hope you are in the best of health. It is a privilege to be the Head teacher of Islamiyah Girls High School. It is an honour to take Islamiyah forward in the direction of raising achievement and attainment, without compromising on the Islamic ethos of the school. Alhamdulillah, Islamiyah School is an Outstanding school in all areas (July 2018). Becoming a non-selective school has opened the doors to the wider community. We have been recognised for our hard work and the support for producer organisations and their networks by being awarded the GOLD Beacon Award. This comes from the collaborative work of pupils, the staff, parents, governors of the IGHS and well-wishers written in the community. I believe a child’s education and tarbiyah is not a dress rehearsal; they only get one chance. Each individual is nurtured and shaped by the values of the Islamic Faith and is given an opportunity to achieve her full potential and to develop a passion for life and for learning on which the Ofsted inspectors commented that "the school is exceptionally successful in achieving its aim of offering a broad and balanced curriculum alongside a positive understanding of Islam, to equip every pupil with skills to be a successful learner, confident individual and responsible British citizen.” In March 2018, Alhumdullilah, I was the recipient of the prestigious award of Lifetime Achievement Award by the AMS Interfaith Education Awards UK (Association of Muslim Schools). We will not be resting on our laurels and strive to do even better, offering more options and strengthening the curriculum even better. We thank all of our teaching and non-teaching staff, volunteers, governors, management and more importantly our pupils and their parents for their hard work and support in making Islamiyah School a success. May the Almighty accept everyone’s effort for His cause. The extremely high expectations that they have for pupils’ academic success and personal development are shared by governors, staff and the pupils themselves.” Ofsted 2018 History of the School Islamiyah School was established in 2000 due to demand from the local community. It was started with just 20 girls in Year 7. The School made progress quickly and met all the requirements set down by HM Inspector and the School was approved and registered by the Department for Education and Skills in February 2003. In our most recent OFSTED inspection in July 2018 we improved our rating for the quality of our education from Good to Outstanding across all Ofsted measures. Our Head Girl I have learnt at Islamiyah that no matter what your ability or your educational prowess, the dedicated teachers are always at hand to assist you socially, academically, emotionally and spiritually. Teachers earnestly strive to ensure students work best according to their ability and exceed their expectations. Islamiyah offers a wholesome education experience instilling morals which comprehensively support the Islamic ethos and British values. The prefect body contributes to the school’s healthy, enjoyable and welcoming atmosphere by being ideal role models for the younger years. They actively participate in school projects including overseeing the student council. I can honestly say that I will not forget Islamiyah as it has allowed me to develop spiritually, socially and academically. I believe that Islamiyah is a foundation of laying down strong pillars of academic achievement and Islamic etiquette. I have the utmost confidence that Islamiyah will continue to inspire students to progress as prosperous young British Muslimahs. I will fondly remember all at Islamiyah in my duas. Maths At Islamiyah Girls High School, we believe that mathematics is a vital tool in everyday living. It is equally significant in decision making as well as in various employment sectors including finance and accounting. Additionally, it contributes to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ abilities to calculate, to reason, to solve problems and to handle data. As a vital core subject, much emphasis is put on the way it is educated. We follow the National Curriculum frameworks for KS3. For KS4, we follow the Edexcel GCSE Examination Board Mathematics specifications, students are streamed to ensure pupils reach their full potential. We deliver extra-curricular enrichment prospects to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics through a number of competitions namely the “UK Maths Challenge.” Our objective is to enable pupils to build a secure framework of mathematical reasoning, which they can use and apply with confidence in any spheres of their life. Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclass at Lancaster University UK Maths Challenge Science With well-designed modern Science facilities, pupils are able to extend their learning. In Key Stage 3, pupils follow Exploring Science where they cover various units. In all three years, Science disciplines such as inheritance, chemical reactions and electricity are studied. In Key Stage 4, high achieving pupils have the opportunity to gain a Triple Award in Science, leaving with three separate GCSE’s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Other pupils are entered into a Combined Award in Science, leaving with two Museum of Science and GCSE’s. Industry (MOSI) trip Learning Science through Role Play BAE Systems & RAF Education Programme Roadshow English The aim of English as a subject is to develop and enhance the skills of reading; writing, speaking and listening. English at Islamiyah encompasses English Language and Literature. The importance of literacy within the school curriculum holds its foundations within the subject of English, which is then utilised in all other subjects. We analyse the skills of written language through the reading of various class novels. This helps to refine reading abilities with further enhancement through comprehension activities and reading different types of texts. Reading a variety of genres also enables a better grasp of creative writing and widens the imagination. Grammar of the English language is consolidated during a variety of fun and interactive activities.

    Focus on: Skills and Qualifications September 2017 Summary Overall Blackburn with Darwen performs above the national average on the Progress 8 measure of attainment at Key Stage 4, although there are significant differences between progress in the borough’s schools. On overall attainment, the borough scores 50.3, just above the all England average score of 48.5. After secondary education, a greater proportion of the borough’s young people stay on in full time education or training and a smaller proportion in apprenticeships, compared to Lancashire Local Education Authority (LEA). On average, a lower proportion of students who study A Levels in Blackburn with Darwen schools and colleges achieve top grades compared to the England average. Working age residents of the borough have on average lower levels of higher level qualifications and a greater proportion have no qualifications; although the gap to the regional and national averages with no qualifications is narrowing. The UK wide Employer Skills Survey estimates that of the job vacancies in the borough a lower proportion than regionally and nationally are due to skills shortages. Qualifications – Key Stage 4 The measure of attainment at Key Stage 4 (KS4) has seen a number of changes over recent years and is now moving away from the use of GCSE attainment to Progress 8 and Attainment 8 as the key measures. Progress 81 Progress 8 scores are only published for mainstream schools e.g. those classed as maintained or academies. They aim to measure how much progress pupils at each school make between the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2) and the end of Key Stage 4 (KS4), compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of KS 22.

Further analysis will be shared in the next Council Forum report. FESTIVAL OF VOICE The Blackburn with Darwen Music Service took part in the borough’s Festival of Voice in June and July which opened with a Gala Concert at King Georges Hall on 22nd June. The festival is a summer programme of activities and performances across the local area and is a collaboration between the Council’s Music Service, Blackburn Cathedral and BBC Radio Lancashire. The Music Service’s annual Big Sing and Mini Sing events featured in the programme alongside new initiatives. A whole singing challenge was launched as part of the festival. All schools received a newly commissioned song entitled ‘Go to The Park’ which encouraged children and their families to explore their local parks and open spaces. Primary schools were invited to sing the song during the festival and a live broadcast was aired on BBC Radio Lancashire with three schools performing in the studio with other schools tuning in to sing along as one choir. CAREERS FAIR FOR ALL AGES The careers fair ‘Blackburn with Darwen is Hiring’ will take place within Blackburn Cathedral and surrounding outside spaces on the 14th September.
