Page Two THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaKer are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25) The Seven Essenal Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate, each nurturing and supporng the other with the communal celebraon of Sunday Eucharist at the center. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M. ~ Let’s cancel our lesson on the sacraments this week. It’s a holiday weekend! Holy Orders is next. This week, please welcome Sister Mary Dietz of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (Province of Africa) the congregation’s initials are SSND. Sister is speaking to us on behalf of her congregation and its work. The School Sisters of Notre Dame, Africa, minister in five countries: Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia and Sierra Leone. Their Charism calls them to education in its broadest sense, Which is Working toWard developing the full potential of each individual. They educate girls in rural areas Where there is little op- portunity for them, they began outreach programs for children Who are orphaned by AIDS, and have es- tablished clinics that treat all who come whether those who are ill can pay or not. Fifty-eight of the seven- ty-six sisters in the province are African born. Funds are needed for their religious formation and profes- sional training. Salaries and stipends for the sisters are very low and do not cover the cost of their living or health care. You may find out more about the good sisters and their mission on the website: WWw.ssnd.org. Following the 7:30 and 9:00 morning Masses please see the proposed enhancements for our church Which are displayed in the Parish Center. After the 9:00 Mass Ms. Jan Turcotte, our design consultant, will be present to discuss the choices and answer any questions. As mentioned last week, Jan is a Roman Catholic who Works with the Diocese of Orange but not for the Diocese of Orange. Her work can be seen at Holy Family Cathedral in Orange, St. Joseph in Placentia, St. EdWards in Dana Point, Holy Spirit in Fountain Valley, St. Boniface in Anaheim, and that is only part of the list. The scheme she is presenting comes after a lot of consideration and study; it has been approved by the Liturgical Commission of the Diocese of Orange. Certain liturgical standards had to be met – material that gives dignity to Worship is among them. Her liturgical design is certainly a ministry. I hope you approve of her choices. She is available to help you With your office or home! Regarding the roofing and seismic retrofit project, I update those Who attend Masses I celebrate. Regarding the sacristy roof - the workers encountered severe water damage to the structure under the sacristy roof, especially on its east and west “wings.” The correction for this damage was to replace A LOT of wood that was not budgeted. Other surprises were found and are corrected. All of it caused more days of work, delays, and expense. To date, these budget/cost over-runs are being carried by Bishop Vann. Should you be with our bishop, please thank him from St. Juliana’s Parish. (Recall: the cost for the project was $315,000. I was asked by the Diocese to discuss the project and cost with the Parish Finance Council. St. Juliana agreed to pay $115,000 – the remaining $200,000 is a gift from the Diocese of Orange.) The sacristy roof Will be finished very soon. The ceiling in the sacristy and cry room is nearly if not completely finished as you read this. It looks beautiful. Regarding the main roof of the church - the workers have exposed several sections of the top, long roof of the church no significant damage necessitating extensive structural repairs have been found. Please thank the workers, charitable words mean a lot to them. Another note regarding the delay: I made a decision to keep the church open during the project. Some pastors close their churches to funerals and services during the week when retrofit/roofing projects are in process; they contract with another church for funerals and etc.
