€˜Shameless’ Thanks Fans for Season 9 Return
‘Shameless’ Thanks Fans for Season 9 Return 06.07.2018 Shameless star Emmy Rossum and other cast members thank fans for their love and support in Showtime's teaser announcing a ninth season of the series. The promo features a nostalgic montage that looks back at key moments from the show. When it returns, political fervor hits the South Side and the Gallaghers take justice into their own hands. Frank (William H. Macy) sees financial opportunity in campaigning and gives voice to the underrepresented South Side working man. Fiona (Rossum) tries to build on her success with her apartment building and takes an expensive gamble hoping to catapult herself into the upper echelon. Meanwhile, Lip (Jeremy Allen White) distracts himself from the challenges of sobriety by taking in Eddie's niece, Xan (Scarlet Spencer). Ian (Cameron Monaghan) faces the consequences of his crimes as the Gay Jesus movement takes a destructive turn. Debbie (Emma Kenney) fights for equal pay and combats harassment; and her efforts lead her to an unexpected realization. Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) sets his sights on West Point and prepares himself for cadet life. Liam (Christian Isaiah) must develop a new skillset to survive outside of his cushy private school walls. Kevin (Steve Howey) and V (Shanola Hampton) juggle the demands of raising the twins with running the Alibi as they attempt to transform the bar into a socially conscious business. Shameless will premiere September 9 at 9 p.m. Immediately afterward at 10 p.m., Showtime will debut new half-hour comedy series Kidding starring Jim Carrey in his first series regular role in more than two decades, and reuniting him with director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). -

Paycheck Protection Program in Los Angeles: Intended As a Lifeline for Small Business Amidst the COVID- 19 Crisis, the Program Was Inequitably Distributed
Paycheck Protection Program In Los Angeles: Intended As A Lifeline For Small Business Amidst The COVID- 19 Crisis, The Program Was Inequitably Distributed SUMMARY: On April 3, 2020, the Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), claiming it would “bring immediate economic relief and eight weeks of financial certainty to millions of small businesses and their employees.” Los Angeles county businesses have subsequently received 184,027 loans. But, tracking with a national trend, relief across Los Angeles has not been equally distributed. Additionally, several companies of questionable need made off with program funds. An Accountable.us analysis of zip codes across Los Angeles showed an inequitable distribution of PPP aid. Overall, for every 1,000 residents of Los Angeles, 17 PPP loans were awarded, and the county’s demographic split was roughly even between white and nonwhite residents. For the top 10 zip codes with the largest nonwhite population, loans per 1,000 residents drops to 11; for the top 10 zip codes with the most white residents, it rises to 59.3. Black zip codes mirror the larger nonwhite trend, with the 10 ten proportioned zip codes also receiving 11 loans per capita. These results mirror nationwide racial disparities in the disbursement of PPP funds. Despite the PPP’s intention to serve small businesses, larger entities in the Los Angeles area received loan funding while smaller businesses suffered. COVID-19 produced record unemployment rates in Los Angeles, and some economists predicted it could take up to the three years for the area to return to pre-pandemic unemployment levels. -

What's the Best Show About Poverty, Crime and Crazy Sex? It's 'Shameless.'
The Washington Post TV What’s the best show about poverty, crime and crazy sex? It’s ‘Shameless.’ By Hank Stuever TV critic January 7, 2016 The Gallaghers aren’t easy to love. In five previous seasons of Showtime’s dramedy “Shameless” (which returns for a sixth on Sunday night), viewers have seen the members of this wild South Side Chicago family struggle with a poverty that affects both the pocket and the soul. Good at heart and bad to the bone, every character on the show will lie, cheat, steal, fornicate and worse, with a voracious appetite for self-preservation. The empathetic texture with which all of this is portrayed, however, has always been “Shameless’s” core attribute. Human despicableness informs so many of our favorite shows, to the degree that we become largely inured to the moral shortcomings of antiheroes. “Shameless” works at a depth and shape that are surprising in a show where the primary aim is shock value. Adapted from a British series in 2011 by American showrunner John Wells (of “ER” and more), “Shameless” has soared and wallowed; in keeping with the bad luck that plagues its characters, it usually goes underpraised and underappreciated in this crowded era of good TV. Sunday’s episode opens with the Gallaghers more or less where we left them — and also with a distinct feeling that the show might be running out of gas. Frank Gallagher, the incorrigible paterfamilias played with booze-breath brio by William H. Macy, is in a state of pathetic grief over the loss of Bianca (Bojana Novakovic), a terminally ill doctor who accepted Frank’s offer of last-minute reckless abandon, blowing her savings on crack highs and running off with him to a Costa Rica beach.
