Opening Night

SUBLET DIRECTOR: EYTAN FOX • 2020 ISRAEL, USA • 90 MINUTES SUGGESTED SCREENING TIME Friday, October 9th @ 7:00PM FILM AVAILABLE TO VIEW Friday, October 9th - Monday, October 12th

Michael (John Benjamin Hickey), a New York Times travel writer, visits Tel Aviv to research his latest article, get some space from his relationship, and recharge his batteries amid the thriving gay scene. Intending to sublet an apartment in Israel’s most populous city, he spontaneously agrees to share the modest one-bedroom space when it becomes clear that handsome tenant Tomer (Niv Nissim) has nowhere else to go. The age gap between the reserved Michael and the free-spirited Tomer lends the film a subtle humor and charm that grows as the pair get to know one another. As Michael shares his wisdom and soaks up the youthful energy that surrounds them, his guard begins to drop and he finds the inspiration to embrace his life again.

Structured around the passing days of his trip, the film has a walk-and-talk quality reminiscent of BEFORE SUNRISE, giving the viewer snapshots of the hedonistic vibe of the city. Eytan Fox has entertained us for three decades with gems like YOSSI & JAGGER and THE BUBBLE, and now gifts us this significantly more personal film, a heartfelt and heartwarming ode to gay men and to aging. — Lucy Mukerjee SPONSORED BY: Different

Family obligations can be stressful even under the best of circumstances. But for Danielle, a sexually-liberated, bisexual post-grad reluctantly dragged to a Jewish funeral service by her parents, the persistent questions about her weight, love life, and career goals can make the dead seem like they’re getting off easy. Also, who was it that died again?

Confronted with the third degree from a cavalcade of characters—all while avoiding her overachieving, law student ex-girlfriend who happens to be lingering around the buffet table—Danielle finds that she is unable to escape her past, present, or future. When her current beau shows up, what was once merely awkward turns into a hilarious exploit in truth avoidance, one-uppance, and neuroses of the highest order. Writer-director Emma Seligman expands her 2018 short into a sharp, perfectly-paced, universal take on conflicting versions of self and how hard it is to live up to anyone’s expectations… even your own. This hysterical feature debut also stars Dianna Agron (GLEE), Jackie Hoffman (FEUD), and Fred Melamed (LADY DYNAMITE). — Angelique Smith

Few films in recent memory have blazed a trail as passionately as Pablo Larraín’sEMA , which signals the director’s return to the present and his native Chile via the incandescent city of Valparaíso.

Mariana Di Girólamo, in a star turn you won’t be able to take your eyes off, plays the titular dancer, mother and pyro-lover impervious to social norms. On a quest to reclaim her adopted son Polo, whose absence explains her deteriorating marriage to choreographer Gastón (Gael García Bernal), Ema sets out on a path of deliberate resistance, embracing the orgasmic street movement of reggaeton and embarking on a fluid succession of relationships with people of all genders in her orbit. For reasons that don’t need explaining, she also owns a flamethrower and rejoices in burning shit down – a none-too-subtle metaphor for her relentless pursuit of catharsis and the film’s white-hot energy through which creative and sexual expression bursts forth.

Every bit the firecracker that had critics in Venice, where it premiered, clamoring for superlatives, Larraín’s film is visually stunning, fueled with combustible symbolism and physicality, and a genuine war cry for dancers, lovers and the matriarchy everywhere. — Tim Wong SPONSORED BY: AWARDS/ACCOLADES • Official Selection: Venice International Film Festival 2019

BREAKING FAST Director: Mike Mosallam • 2020 USA • 92 minUTES SUGGESTED SCREENING TIME Sunday, October 18 @ 7:30PM FILM AVAILABLE TO VIEW Sunday, October 18th - Wednesday, October 21st

Cultures clash and passion blooms in this lively and insightful romantic comedy. Mo (Haaz Sleiman, THOSE PEOPLE) is a gay Muslim living in West Hollywood — he’s a dedicated doctor who prioritizes his faith. When his long-term relationship takes an unexpected turn, leaving him suddenly single, he discovers that finding someone who enjoys quiet evenings of cooking and conversation is challenging in a sea of guys who are focused on partying and hook-ups. But when Mo meets Kal (Michael Cassidy, THE DARE PROJECT), sparks fly, and the cute couple moves carefully into a romance that is sweet and complicated at once.

True-to-life dialogue and richly complex and relatable characters breathe naturalistic energy into writer-director Mike Mosallam’s gorgeously shot feature debut, which he expanded from his 2015 short of the same name. Funny and thoughtful, Breaking Fast — which also stars Veronica Cartwright (ALIEN) and Patrick Sabongui (Homeland) — tackles deep issues of faith, friendship and sexuality with upbeat energy and a big heart. — Brendan Peterson

What made CURVE MAGAZINE (first published in 1990 asDENEUVE ) ahead of its time wasn’t just the radical choice to boldly print “lesbian” on the cover next to out and proud figureheads such as Melissa Etheridge, Wanda Sykes and k.d. lang. CURVE was filled with unapologetic images and stories that radiated community and dignity from cover to cover, quickly becoming a cornerstone of lesbian culture. So in 2019 when founder Franco Stevens heard that the magazine might go out of print, she was left with two questions: Was a lesbian magazine still important for lesbian visibility? And, how had visibility changed over three decades?

In AHEAD OF THE CURVE, director Jen Rainin and producer Rivkah Beth Medow craft a personal journey that follows Stevens’ process grappling with questions of community and legacy. Linking lesbian histories with contemporary viewpoints, the film moves between interviews with LGBTQ+ tastemakers, “celesbians” (including Jewelle Gomez, Kate Kendell, and Lea DeLaria) and rich archival footage. Sexy, smart, and nakedly emotional, CICADA is the bold feature film debut of actor, co-writer, and co-director Matt Fifer. Pensioners Nina (Barbara Sukowa) and Madeleine (Martine Chevallier) have hidden their deep and passionate love for many decades. From the point of view of those surrounding them, including Madeleine’s meddling daughter (Léa Drucker), they are simply two neighbours sharing a hallway during their sunset years. SUGGESTED SCREENING TIME Thursday, October 15 @ 7:30PM FILM AVAILABLE TO VIEW Thursday, October 15th - Sunday, October 18th

The heartthrob star of CRAZY RICH ASIANS, LAST CHRISTMAS, and A SIMPLE FAVOR, Henry Golding breaks out in this extraordinary dramatic role. From Hong Khaou, director of the tear-jerking gay film,LILTING , MONSOON explores memory, loss, and new beginnings with a tale that’s as haunting as it is romantic.

Golding stars as Kit, a Vietnamese man raised in London since childhood, when his parents escaped their war-torn homeland. Now, he’s returning for the first time to a country he doesn’t recognize, a language he’s forgotten, and the childhood friend who lived to tell. In his travels, he meets Lewis (Parker Sawyers, who played Barak Obama in the feature film SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU). An American entrepreneur, Lewis comes from a family impacted by the war in a very different way, and their mutual scars fuel their connection as much as their palpably mutual attraction.

A travelogue of a country where the ancient meets the modern, MONSOON boasts stunning images of vibrant street life, lush landscapes, and of course, the gay nightlife. A lush, sexually explicit exploration of desire and fear, DRY WIND delivers bold colors, grand melodrama, a gorgeous soundtrack, and an unflinching look at gay intimacy. In a drought- stricken Brazilian town, Sandro keeps a low profile. He has unbridled sex with his friend, Ricardo, but only when hidden in the woods. His refusal to commit or leave the closet leads Ricardo’s eye to stray, and it lands on the ridiculously hot Maicon, a mysterious motorcyclist played by Tom of Finland drawing come to life, Rafael Teóphilo. But Sandro’s jealousy leads to betrayal, violence, and ultimately a reconsideration of living life in the shadows.

In a vivacious supporting performance, trans actress Renata Carvalho plays a union organizer and Sandro’s friend, Paula. She tries to make Sandro see that the personal is political and that there’s no glory in a life lived on the sidelines.

As he did in his playful, experimental documentary MR. LEATHER, director Daniel Nolasco stages lurid BDSM fantasies with a fresh eye and a sex-positive attitude. His first feature film, DRY WIND recalls the classics of Pedro Almodóvar and establishes Nolasco as a brash and promising queer filmmaker.
