Winchester Over 55’s Forum

The Winchester District Over 55’s Forum is an independent organisation run by local volunteers whose aim is to give a collective voice to older people:  To influence decision makers on matters that impact on the daily lives of people aged over 55.  To help to combat disadvantage amongst older people and provide a platform where older people can speak about the issues that affect their health and well being.

The Forum responds to local consultations on matters that affect older people. The Forum meets monthly and welcomes new members and enquiries. It offers a varied program of activities including a range of information events.

The Worthy Players The group meets every Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 7:30pm. The Worthy Players is the amateur drama group for "the Worthies" – Kings Worthy, Headbourne Worthy, and . Formed originally by members of the local Women’s Institute in 1974, the group has since performed over 100 shows, including drama, comedy, pantomime, variety and old time music hall. Their membership is made up of members of all ages, many of whom come from much further afield than the Worthies – they are open to all newcomers.

Friday Coffee Drop-in: (run by the Centre) Time: 10:30am until 12:00 pm first Friday of every month. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and cakes available at reasonable prices, with plenty of chatter and a choice of up to date books from the paperback book exchange. All are welcome! Just turn up.

(E) Wonston and Worthy Camera Club Location: St Mary’s Hall, Fraser Rd, Springvale, Kings Worthy, SO23 7PJ. The Club meets on alternate Thursday evenings at 7:45 pm from September to April. Activities include lectures given by experts in their field, outings to venues of photographic interest, tuition in the use of photographic equipment, advice and competition evenings.

Littleton

Littleton Bowling Club The Club enters teams in the Southampton all District Ladies’ and Men’s Leagues and in the Whitchurch League (Mixed) – a number of their members also play at County level. Club sessions are mainly random drawn triples which are held on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm (6:30pm in June and July) and on Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 pm. The green is open to members for informal roll-ups. Club competitions and matches are played seven days per week from 11:00 am until dusk during the outdoor season lasting from late April until mid September.

(E) Croquet Club Littleton Recreation Ground, The Hallway, Main Road, Littleton The aim of the group is to encourage people to take gentle exercise via the game of croquet, and to join in the social activities. Wheelchair users can spectate, however unfortunately the lawns are not able to accommodate wheelchairs. The Club offers coaching and if needed a person is available to teach the basics of croquet. The current membership subscription is £57 for the season. Times: Daylight hours each day. Mix-ins: Mon 2.00pm, Weds 5.45pm and Sat 2.00pm

(E) Women's Institute This is on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 pm. Our longstanding friendly group now has almost 60 members and we meet on the first Tuesday of each month in the Hall. For further details of our monthly speakers please visit their website www.hampshirewi.org.uk. Members participate regularly in activities organised by the County and the Winchester Group. We also organise outings to places of interest and visits to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to see Operas and Ballets. Our craft, Scrabble and Mah-jongg groups meet regularly in members’ homes and the Drama group entertains us during the year. There is also a small walking group which usually plans to finish with a pub lunch! We always welcome new members so just come along to one of our meetings and introduce yourself.

Yoga Classes Tuesday evenings, 6:45 pm - 8:30 pm at Littleton Millennium Memorial Hall Aimed at all ages, ability and gender led by a qualified Iyengar Yoga teacher who can adjust postures to suit individual needs.

Littleton and Harestock Gardening Club A friendly and informative society which was formed in 1992 for new and experienced gardeners which takes place on the third Wednesday of every month at 7:30pm. The society now has a membership of about 100. For a small membership fee (all are welcome to join) members can gain the following benefits:

Monthly informative meetings, visits to local and national gardens, free gardening advice and the chance to meet fellow gardeners!

New Hall Players This local group meets regularly for play readings and production rehearsals for a variety of plays. Anyone who is interested in amateur productions whether it be acting, directing, technical support, front of house or set-making will be very welcome. The group welcomes new members in any capacity. Micheldever Variety Group The Group is a community-based amateur dramatic society which has been putting on plays, pantomimes, readings and other entertainments for over thirty years. It also organises play-readings, revues and quizzes, and has staged productions such as Daisy Pulls it Off, Steel Magnolias, Stepping Out and the ever popular ‘Allo, ‘Allo.

Activities at South Wonston Village Hall

(E) South Wonston Table Tennis Club Open to all between the ages 8 and 80. The Club offers coaching and friendly matches. South Wonston Local History Group The group’s purpose: is to research the local history of South Wonston , to record contemporary developments and events, and to promote interest by residents in conjunction with Dever Valley Local History Society. The group holds talks and other events relating to the local history of South Wonston, and similar activities are arranged by the Society. There is no membership subscription but a charge is levied at events to cover expenses, which was £3 per person at the end of 2010. The group meets at South Wonston Village Hall and halls used by the Dever Valley local History group in Micheldever.

(E) Age Concern Winchester Coffee is available from 10:45 am onwards and there is a social time until the meal is served at about noon.

Members either make their own way there or if they are unable to do so and they live within a 3 mile radius of the City Centre they can be collected by minibus. Members also go on trips and outings, have a special Christmas Lunch, receive talks – and meet and enjoy each other's company. The current charge is £1.30.

Christ Church – Lunch Club Location: Christchurch Road, Winchester SO23 9SR. The Lunch Club welcomes retired folk of any age at 12.30 pm in the Simeon Room at Christ Church. Some members belong to Christ Church, but many do not, thus providing a rich mix of background and experience.

The meal is prepared and cooked on the premises, and served by a team of volunteers. There is a service of Holy Communion at 11:30 am, and several members like to attend. Transport can usually be arranged and is provided by volunteer drivers (more drivers are always needed). Transport can also be linked to the Communion service.

Contact The Elderly Tea & Social club For people over 75, who are living alone, isolated from friends and family and too frail to leave the house by themselves. One Sunday afternoon a month, a volunteer driver collects older guests and takes them to a volunteer's home for tea, talk and companionship. Groups enjoy time together and take pleasure in chatting over tea and cakes.

Winchester and District Carers Forum The Forum provides a support network for carers and promotes action to fill gaps in services. The Forum meets once a month and welcomes new members and enquiries.

Winchester Over 55’s Forum The Forum aims to maintain and improve the well-being of all individuals aged 55 and over in Winchester and its District. It aims to listen to and respond to issues that affect older people. It also responds to local consultations on matters that affect older people and provides feedback on policies and procedures that affect older people. The Forum meets monthly and welcomes new members and enquiries. It is currently planning a program of activities including a range of information events and social activities.

Support Groups

(E) Age Concern (Hampshire) Age Concern Hampshire runs Pre-retirement Seminars four times per year with an established customer base of local and, locally based, national employers. An Annual Golf Challenge (involving many of the golf clubs in the County), A Writers’ Competition, Activities Days, a UK online Computer Centre at Winnall Community Centre. Foot Health Clinic - The Foot Health Service has been established by Age Concern Hampshire to provide older people (who do not meet the criteria for free N.H.S. Chiropody Services) with a choice of where they purchase their foot health care. It is non-profit making, but charges a small fee to cover service costs. This is provided at Friarsgate Medical Centre, Winchester on Mondays.

(E).Alzheimer’s Society Support Group Winchester Local activities held at Littleton Memorial Hall, The Hallway, Littleton

Monday Club A club for people with dementia and their carers to attend. Clients with dementia are invited to take part in organised therapeutic activities while carers may use another area of the venue to chat and support one another. Outings Regular outings to local places of interest including museums, gardens, theatre and boat trips. Outreach Lunch Club An Outreach Lunch Club is run on the first Tuesday of each month for former carers and those who require less support. This is a chance for people to meet and catch up in a warm and friendly environment. Come and enjoy a delicious sandwich lunch. Support Group Lunch Club The Alzheimers Society also runs a Support Group Lunch Club on the third Tuesday of each month for carers and those with dementia. Offering a chance to share experiences, offer advice or just chat! Refreshments and sandwiches are provided. Help with transport if required is available.

(E) Colebrook Club for Blind & Partially Sighted The Club holds a monthly meeting (1st Monday of every month) in central Winchester, for people with significant sight loss, generally with a speaker. It also has occasional outings. Provides guidance on obtaining assistance relevant to problem.

Not Forgotten Association Assists ex-service disabled men and women. The Association provides TV sets for those whose mobility is restricted or who are housebound, TV licenses where there is financial hardship, concerts in ex- service residential and nursing homes, outings, individual respite holidays (with carers if required) and group holidays. They can only assist ex-service personnel who are war pensioners or who are currently suffering from some form of ill-health.

Handyman service The Home Improvement Agency provides a low cost handyman service aimed at older and disabled residents. They cover minor jobs such as replacing taps, fixing leaks, putting up shelves, installing locks etc. They make a small charge of £10 per hour (plus vat). The local branch works out of Southampton.

Message in a Bottle A device devised by the Lions to help emergency services have vital information about a person’s personal and medical details consisting of a small, easily recognisable plastic container with a green cross on it. This is widely used and supported by Ambulance, Police, Fire and Health Professionals. It can be obtained for free from Health Centres and Chemists. If you have difficulties in obtaining a message in a bottle please contact your local Lions Club telephone 0845 833 9502.

The Red Cross Medical Equipment Loan scheme provides help in times of crisis to give short term support which includes the loan of medical equipment. They also sell equipment if people prefer to purchase. Equipment includes walking frames, sticks, commodes, wheelchairs, specialised crockery, feeding utensils, and gardening equipment for people with disabilities.

Transport

Dial a Ride The service is a door to door bookable service operating on weekdays (up to 8 days in advance) designed to transport individuals and their carers to a range of destinations in Winchester. It is most useful to people with mobility issues or sensory impairment who find it problematic to use ordinary passenger transport. Users do not need to be registered disabled to use the service.
