Paleocene Alkaline Volcanism in the Nares Strait Region Related to Strike-slip Tectonics Solveig Estrada & Detlef Damaske Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Hannover, Germany ([email protected]) The tectonic development of the North Atlantic, the Labrador Sea/Baffin Bay and the Eurasian Basin of Arctic Ocean led to relative movements between the Greenland Plate and the North American Plate. There has been a debate for many years, whether the Nares Strait between northwest Greenland and Ellesmere Island marks an ancient plate boundary in terms of a left-lateral transform fault (Wegener Fault) or whether there was no movement between Greenland and Ellesmere Island at all. New data were acquired during joint German-Canadian geological field work on northeast Ellesmere Island 1998-2000 (Mayr 2008), followed in 2001 by a geoscience cruise in Nares Strait (Tessensohn et al. 2006). Indications for sinistral strike-slip movements followed by compressive tectonics were found at the western margin of northern Nares Strait (Saalmann et al. 2005). Paleogene basins on Judge Daly Promontory, northeast Ellesmere Island, are bounded by a complex pattern of strike-slip and thrust faults. The clastic sediments in the basins are rich in volcanogenic material. Volcanic pebbles within the Cape Back basin near Nares Strait are derived from lava flows and ignimbrites of a continental rift-related, strongly differentiated, highly incompatible element enriched, alkaline volcanic suite (Estrada et al. 2009). 40Ar/39Ar amphibole and alkali feldspar ages indicate that volcanism was active around 61–58 Ma and was probably contemporaneous with sedimentation within the Paleogene pull-apart basins on Judge Daly Promontory formed by sinistral strike-slip tectonics parallel to the present-day Nares Strait. -

REINTJES1 (Received 6 April 1994; accepted in revised form 13 March 1995) ABSTRACT. A wolf-sighting questionnaire was sent to 201 arctic field researchers from many disciplines to solicit information on observations of wolves (Canis lupus spp.) made by field parties on Canadian Arctic Islands. Useable responses were obtained for 24 of the 25 years between 1967 and 1991. Respondents reported 373 observations, involving 1203 wolf-sightings. Of these, 688 wolves in 234 observations were judged to be different individuals; the remaining 515 wolf-sightings in 139 observations were believed to be repeated observations of 167 of those 688 wolves. The reported wolf-sightings were obtained from 1953 field-weeks spent on 18 of 36 Arctic Islands reported on: no wolves were seen on the other 18 islands during an additional 186 field-weeks. Airborne observers made 24% of all wolf-sightings, 266 wolves in 48 packs and 28 single wolves. Respondents reported seeing 572 different wolves in 118 separate packs and 116 single wolves. Pack sizes averaged 4.8 ± 0.28 SE and ranged from 2 to 15 wolves. Sixty-three wolf pups were seen in 16 packs, with a mean of 3.9 ± 2.24 SD and a range of 1–10 pups per pack. Most (81%) of the different wolves were seen on the Queen Elizabeth Islands. Respondents annually averaged 10.9 observations of wolves ·100 field-weeks-1 and saw on average 32.2 wolves·100 field-weeks-1· yr -1 between 1967 and 1991. -

DAVID MECH1 (Received 6 October 2006; accepted in revised form 22 January 2007) ABSTRACT. During the summers of 2000 through 2006, I counted arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos) pups and adults in a pack, arctic hares (Lepus arcticus) along a 9 km index route in the area, and muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) in a 250 km2 part of the area near Eureka (80˚ N, 86˚ W), Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. Adult wolf numbers did not correlate with muskox numbers, but they were positively related (r2 = 0.89; p < 0.01) to an arctic hare index. This is the first report relating wolf numbers to non-ungulate prey. Le nombre de loups adultes ne corrélait pas avec le nombre de bœufs musqués, mais il était relié de manière positive (r2 = 0,89; p < 0,01) à un index de lièvres arctiques. Il s’agit du premier rapport établissant un lien entre le nombre de loups et des proies non ongulées. -

Larter Department of Environment and Natural Resources Government of the Northwest Territories 2013 Manuscript Report No. 230 The contents of this paper are the sole responsibility of the author. i ii ABSTRACT As part of a larger study, wolf stomachs were collected from entire wolf carcasses collected by local harvesters from Sachs Harbour (71°59’N 125°15’W) on Banks Island from 1992-2001, and from Ulukhaktok, formerly Holman (70°45’N 117°42’W) on Northwest Victoria Island from 1998-2001. Wolf scats were collected opportunistically during field research trips conducted on Banks Island from 1993-2001 and on Northwest Victoria Island from 1998-1999. A total of 129 stomachs and 38 scats from Banks Island, and 30 stomachs and two scats from Northwest Victoria Island were analyzed macro and microscopically for hair, feather, and bone fragments of prey items. Prey items were identified as closely as possible to species. Seventeen stomachs were empty. Remains of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) predominated being found in 90% of 115 and 88% of 27 stomachs from Banks Island and Northwest Victoria Island, respectively, and 87% of 38 and 100% of two scats from Banks Island and Northwest Victoria Island, respectively. Peary caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi), collared lemming (Dicrostonyx torquatus), Arctic hare (Lepus arcticus), Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus), snow goose (Chen caerulescens), ptarmigan (Lagopus spp.), and plant material were also found in stomachs and scats; however, only Peary caribou and collared lemming occurred in ≥5% of either stomachs or scats. -
