Wood Identification Workshop

Ian McLaughlin led an enthusiastic group of ten members at our renewed identification workshop in Melbourne in July. Kicking off with a quiz over morning tea, there will be no prizes for guessing that Eugene Dimitriadis won with eight out of ten correct. We were pleased to welcome new members Gordon Dadswell and Adam Tucker at their first meeting. Gordon brought a leaf from his parent’s dining table and after Ian removed most of the wood with his Stanley knife, he was happy to name it as Tasmanian Myrtle.

In the workshop Ian ran an electronic presentation drawn mainly from Hoadley’s microphotographs to illustrate key anatomical features. This turned to the CSIRO Macro Key by Jugo Ilic. Ian demonstrated the original Card Sorting system from CSIRO and the group discussed sourcing the database of features via computer. Adam took away Ian’s 3&1/2” floppy disk version of the old CSIRO program “CSIROID” hoping to retrieve and evaluate it.

After the workshop was adjourned, Gordon and Adam raised the matter of collating the contents of private wood collections in Australia. They intend to address this issue with a note in the newsletter.

The follow up workshop proposed for the end of August has now be re-scheduled for September 14 at the Lyons home in Mont Albert North. Contact John directly on 0425 871 565 if you plan to attend.

Dadswell Collection Provenance

As an example of the interesting information available in the logs, John found that four of his specimens; D3246 Pinus pinea, D3249 Pinus pinaster, D3253 Eucalyptus baxteri and D3256 Eucalyptus piperta were collected from the Bundaleer forest, South Australia in 1935. This historic plantation is described as the “birthplace of Australian forestry” where hardwood and softwood plantations were established in 1876. The samples may originate from some of these plantings or have been produced from seeds from those plantations.

The plantations were preserved in the Bundaleer Forest Reserve but may well have been consumed by bushfires in 2013.

Our New Zealand Adventure – Henry and Anne Doran

Our recent trip to NZ in May was unforgettable. During our 2 week drive Henry drove 3000kms from the north to the south and crisscrossed this beautiful part of the North Island. We visited museums, sawmills, the mountains and ocean and the pristine environment NZ is famous for. We met up with the friendly folk and were treated to some fine Maori hospitality.

One of our many highlights was the visit to the Ancient Kauri King- dom and the Kauri circular staircase at Awanui – approx. 4hrs drive north of Auckland. This giant staircase is the centre piece of the showroom. Carved from a 50 tonne section of one giant swamp Kauri log, estimated weight 140 tonnes, it is the largest swamp Kau- ri log ever to have been extracted, and because of this it was never milled.

At the sawmill we were given a guided tour of the factory where they cut Kauri slabs for tables etc. Ancient Kauri Kingdom, Awanui They operate a Lucas Mill from Beechworth, Victoria, Australia, specially adapted with a 16ft (5 me- tre) bar. The staircase took Dave Stewart 300 hours to chainsaw it out and 2 other men another 200 hours to finish it. We walked through this stair- case and it is truly a product of sheer talent and ingenuity.

Kauri circular staircase

We also visited the Kauri Museum at Matakohe, a 2 hour drive north of Auckland. This huge museum, which opened in 1962, provided a stimu- lating insight into the Kauri theme. It shows how the settlers harvested the timber and gum from the giant Kauri trees, and what life was like in early New Zealand. We spent 5 hours in the museum and were just awe struck.

We also visited the Swamp Kauri Sawmill and Gallery at Kaihu. Nelson the owner, showed us over his sawmill which was cov- ered in huge swamp logs, some thousands of years old. Inside Kauri Museum, Matakobe the gallery in the centre of the showroom, was a huge swamp Kauri log. This houses the circular building filled with beautifully crafted bowls, plates, tables and countless arte- facts and Maori tiki and other cultural displays.

It certainly was an eye opener. While Henry did the driving, I took lots of photos and kept a daily journal of all the places we drove through and visited. The North Island contains an amazing slice of NZ culture, history and sheer enjoyment. Our time in NZ ended all too soon, and maybe next time I will write about some more adventures of the wonderful time we spent in The Land of the Long White Cloud!
