Overview of Hazard Incidences in April 2021

In April 2021, eleven hazards took place across Bangladesh i.e. Covid-19 pandemic, Boat capsize, Earthquake, Bridge collapse, Fire, Heat wave, Lightning, Nor’wester, Storm, Hailstorm and wild animal attack. Covid-19 affected a total of 147,837 persons across the country among which 2,404 persons died and 139,017 persons recovered in April, 2021. NDRCC reported total 865 Fire incidents throughout the country among which division faced 256 incidents, division faced 175 incidents and Chattogram division faced 147 incidents of fire in April 2021. However, from NDRCC Daily Disaster Reports and different dailies, detailed information of 39 fire incidents were found in which 25 people died and 52 people were injured. Mild to moderate Heat wave has blown over all the 8 divisions throughout this month and highest temperature was recorded 41.2⁰C in Jashore. Nor’wester has blown over 12 districts throughout this month in which 14 people died and causes great damage to Boro rice. Boat capsized in 3 districts which took lives of 39 people and 3 got injured. In 4 districts 3 people died and 3 were injured due to Lightning. A Bridge collapsed in and communication was disrupted due to it. Strong Storm blew over Dhaka and Sunamganj district in this month. Hailstorm affected Natore district with 2 events that causes damaged Mango trees. A strong Earthquake was felt in different parts of the country on the last of this month. A Wild elephant attacked a women and killed her in Chattogram district.

Covid-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh The Covid-19 pandemic had affected with high impacts throughout this month in all the 64 districts across Bangladesh. The number of identified patients with Covid-19 was 147,837 among which 139,017 persons recovered and 2,404 persons died. In April, 2021 the number of death toll was over 100 for the first time. From the very first case identified in March 8, 2020, the total number of Covid-19 patients is 759,132 among which 11,450 persons died and 681,426 persons recovered up to April, 2021. Fire From NDRCC Daily Disaster Reports and different dailies, detailed information of 39 fire incidents were found. 25 people died, 52 were injured and 36 houses, 62 shops, 2 factories, 1 slum was burnt due to fire throughout this month. (See Annex-2 for district wise details)

Nor’wester According to NDRCC report and national dailies, In April, in total six nor’wester took place in different parts of the country. In April 3, Nor’wester blew over Kurigram district in which 1 person died. In April 4, Nor’wester blew over 4 of Gaibandha district in which 10 person died and caused a great damage to kacha houses, electric poles and tress, in , Nor’wester affected 13 upazilas which caused huge damage to 25,325 Hactor Boro rice field, in 2 people died and in Jamalpur district 10 villages were affected. 6 upazilas of Jhenaidaha district were affected due to Nor’wester on April 4 which causes damage to 117 Hactor Rice field. Nor’wester also affected Sunamganj, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Bhola, Dhaka and districts in different dates of the month in which 1 person died and caused damage to houses, crops, tress and electric poles. (See Annex-3 for wise details) Hailstorm A hailstorm blown over Naldanga upazila of Natore district on April 4, 2021 and causes great damage to corn, onion and Boro rice fields. Another event of hailstorm occurred in Boroigram and Lalpur upaila of Natore district on April 9, 2021 and causes great damage to Mango,Banana, Watermelon, Kakor and Boro rice fields. Wild Animal Attack An incident of wild elephant attack took place in Bashkhali upazila of Chattogram district on April 16, 2021 in which a women was killed (Source: https://www.jagonews24.com, April 16, 2021). Bridge Collapse A bridge collapsed in Basail upazila of Tangail district on April 24, 2021. No impact is recorded but communication is disrupted due to it. Lightning 3 incidents of lightning took place in 4 districts i.e. Netrokona, Sunamganj, Sirajganj and district which killed 3 persons, 2 cows and 3 injured and causes of fire in hospital due to lightning which damage cost is BDT 50 lac. GoB Response in April 2021

Response to Covid-19 up to April 30, 2021 From February 7, 2021 to April 30, total 920,001 First doses and 475,736 Second doses of vaccines were given. GoB has declared partial lockdown which was effective from April 2 to April 13. As the number of confirmed cases were rising day by day, GoB has again declared strict lockdown which was effective from April 14. The mass people have been guided to maintain social distance in workplaces and religious institutions and avoid any kind of public gatherings. All the seminars, meeting and trainings should be organized through virtual platform. DGHS and IEDCR have undertaken necessary steps to test Covid-19 suspected patients in the test labs across the country. A total of 9,911 general beds, 578 Intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 13,494 Oxygen cylinders, 980 high flow nasal cannula, and 843 oxygen concentrators are available in the hospitals across the country. DGHS and IEDCR have opened up hotline number (i.e. 16263, 333, 10655, 01927711784, 01927711785, 01937000011, and 01937110011) for consultation with doctors through phone calls which already have attended 2,68,79,816 phone calls. Response to Fire Government responded to two incidents of fire.  Each of the affected family received BDT 6,000 cash, 30kg rice, 4 blankets and 2 bundles of corrugated iron sheets in Boda upazila of Panchagar district on April 27, 2021(Source: https://www.jagonews24.com, April 28, 2021).  Each of the death’s family received BDT 25,000 taka and injured people received BDT 15,000 taka for the fire incident that took place in Armanitola area of on April 29, 2021 (Source: https://www.jagonews24.com, April 29, 2021). Response to Nor’wester  In Kurigram district, each of the death’s family received BDT 20,000 taka (Source: NDRCC Daily Disaster Report, April 6, 2021).  In Gaibandha district, each death’s family received BDT 10,000 taka (Source: NDRCC Daily Disaster Report, April 6, 2021). Response to Wild Heat wave GoB has responded to the damages of rice fields due to heat wave in 13 districts.

 BDT 20 Lacs was allocated for Netrokona and Kishoreganj districts.  BDT 10 Lacs was allocated for Gopalganj distict.  For Sirajganj, Mymensingh, Gaibandha, Rajshahi, Chapainababganj, Natore, Naogaon, Jashore, Rangpur and Lakshmipur disticts, BDT 5 Lacs was allocated for each district. Conclusion A total of 11 hazards took place in this month with several incidents across the country. These incidents caused a huge loss of lives and properties and disrupted daily activities of people. GoB took initiatives to minimize the losses and also undertook necessary actions to provide support to the distressed people.
