About U.S. Mint Sets

U.S. Mint sets have been issued since 1947 and each contains perfect Brilliant Uncirculated specimens of every circulation issue for the year. Included are each coin denomination (cent through dollar) struck for commerce that year by the no-mintmark “P” , “D” and sometimes “S” Mint.

These beautiful coins are produced with the same process as coins created for circulation in commerce but feature some quality enhancements and are specially packaged for collectors.

In 1965, 1966 and 1967 higher quality mint sets were made as a substitute for proof sets which were not produced during these years.

Since 2005 the coins in mint sets have boasted a special satin finish rather than the former BU look.

In older sets the coins are protectively contained in see-through plastic packs, with the issuing mint’s medal generally included.

As of 2007 impressive new U.S. Mint packaging was introduced that allows edge lettering to be viewed.
