Distant Voices: Distributed Learning at Royal Roads University A personal touch and ongoing technical support yield high student retention for a school dedicated to distance learning By Susan Chandler ecelia David leads a team well versed in the intricacies of Ccomputer programs and net- working configurations, but her “to do” list won’t be found on any hard drive or Palm Pilot. Instead, when adding to her list, she selects a large piece of chalk and faces a blackboard covering one wall of the office she shares with the rest of the Computer Service team at Royal Roads Univer- sity in Victoria, British Columbia. Her computer is reserved for emergencies only — pastel Post-it notes form a halo around the monitor, with mes- sages like “Must do before noon today!!!” and “Check on this by 4 p.m. at the latest.” David’s many “notes to self” are part and parcel of her job as a systems analyst and coordinator of the help desk at Royal Roads. But where a typi- cal university help desk assists stu- dents as they work in an on-campus computer lab, her group deals with requests from Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, and as far afield as the Philip- pines and South America. Interactive Visualization Tools for the Structural Biologist
computer programs Journal of Applied Interactive visualization tools for the structural Crystallography biologist ISSN 0021-8898 Benjamin T. Porebski,a Bosco K. Hob* and Ashley M. Bucklea* Received 22 March 2013 Accepted 28 June 2013 aDepartment of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Monash University, Clayton, Victoria 3800, Australia, and bMonash eResearch Center, Monash University, Clayton, Victoria 3800, Australia. Correspondence e-mail: [email protected], [email protected] In structural biology, management of a large number of Protein Data Bank (PDB) files and raw X-ray diffraction images often presents a major organizational problem. Existing software packages that manipulate these file types were not designed for these kinds of file-management tasks. This is typically encountered when browsing through a folder of hundreds of X-ray images, with the aim of rapidly inspecting the diffraction quality of a data set. To solve this problem, a useful functionality of the Macintosh operating system (OSX) has been exploited that allows custom visualization plugins to be attached to certain file types. Software plugins have been developed for diffraction images and PDB files, which in many scenarios can save considerable time and effort. The direct visualization of diffraction images and PDB structures in the file browser can be used to identify key files of interest simply by scrolling through a list of files. 1. Introduction Chimera (Pettersen et al., 2004), QtMG (McNicholas et al., 2011), Data visualization is an important and daily activity in structural VMD (Humphrey et al., 1996)], they were primarily designed to biology, and often requires several specialized applications. Well known TCP and UDP ports used by Apple Languages English software products Symptoms Learn more about TCP and UDP ports used by Apple products, such as OS X, OS X Server, Apple Remote Desktop, and iCloud. Many of these are referred to as "well known" industry standard ports. Resolution About this table The Service or Protocol Name column lists services registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (http://www.iana.org/), except where noted as "unregistered use." The names of Apple products that use these services or protocols appear in the Used By/Additional Information column. The RFC column lists the number of the Request For Comment document that defines the particular service or protocol, which may be used for reference. RFC documents are maintained by RFC Editor (http://www.rfc- editor.org/). If multiple RFCs define a protocol, there may only be one listed here. This article is updated periodically and contains information that is available at time of publication. This document is intended as a quick reference and should not be regarded as comprehensive. Apple products listed in the table are the most commonly used examples, not a comprehensive list. For more information, review the Notes below the table. Tip: Some services may use two or more ports. It is recommend that once you've found an instance of a product in this list, search on the name (Command-F) and then repeat (Command-G) to locate all occurrences of the product. For example, VPN service may use up to four diferent ports: 500, 1701, 1723, and 4500. -
