All things connect.” —CHIEF SEATTLE, 1855 These concepts are not new but are even more urgent and relevant in today’s world. As modern man’s capacity for invention and destruction continues at an ever accelerating pace, we are faced with the permanent consequences of some of our actions—an environment or location once damaged or destroyed by carelessness may be lost to us forever. In this issue, we examine the complexities involved in preserving locations for future generations to use and enjoy in Martin Cuff’s “Extreme Measures, Standard Practice.” Our cover story features an interview with decidedly green filmmaker Darren Aronofsky on the making of the environmentally themed Noah. Shannon Mullen also discusses the challenges of working in environmentally sensitive lo- cations with the 2014 LMGA award-winning location manager Robbie Boake in “Game of Thrones Season 4: The Multi-Headed Beast Is Back.” We join Chris Fuentes on the red carpet for the first annual Location Managers Guild Awards. Held on March 29 at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, the awards were an SRO celebration of worldwide location professionals’ achievements this past year. The star-studded gala included Billy Crystal, Cheryl Boone Isaacs (AMPAS President), Haskell Wexler and Shari Belafonte as well as members of the industry press corps. It was a glorious night. Our departments in each issue include “Tech Talk,” “Career Focus,” “In My City,” “In the News” and “Martini Shot.” Articles and photography submissions by members are always encouraged. With the approach of spring, we hope you enjoy this green issue. We take our job as stewards of the environment and community seriously. We are pleased that the LMGA Compass provides a voice for these concerns. In closing, we would be remiss to not light a candle for camera assistant Sarah Jones who was tragically killed on location.     2013 ANNUAL REPORT DAYS OF SUPPORTING THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF MOTION PICTURES 2 Dear Academy Member, With the Oscars nearly here, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the Academy’s accomplishments over the past year and the work we are doing year-round. The last twelve months have seen increased industry outreach by the Academy, new initiatives from our Science and Technology Council, and a robust calendar of exhibitions and programs – all in the service of advancing our core mission of celebrating excellence in the motion picture arts and sciences. Our grants have funded a wide range of film festivals and promising filmmakers. We’ve raised our international profile with visits to emerging film centers in China, the United Arab Emirates, Korea, India and Brazil. And we’ve recently stepped up activity in our London office; you’ll be seeing the effects of that very soon. I’m particularly excited about our rapid progress on the Academy Museum. We’ve made great headway toward our fundraising goals; world-renowned architects Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali have completed the initial planning to renovate the historic May Company Building at LACMA; and we are now well on our way toward the opening of the museum in 2017. As we expand the scope of our presence around the world, it’s more important than ever that the Academy speaks with one voice. So we have implemented a communications strategy that includes a new look and logo to convey the importance of our year-round Academy programs. It is designed to help us tell our story in a consistent and easily recognizable way.

    Somewhere Over the Rainbow: Finding the Cure for Oscars-So-White Color- Blindness The Oscars® are synonymous with the aspirational best in the film industry, however, racial dominance and the consistent underrepresentation of ethnic and minority groups continues to prevail. The lack of diverse representation in Hollywood is not only a massive barrier to the projection of a better tomorrow for a generation of Americans, it is a lost opportunity for the U.S. to take a lead as a model global force for equality. A recent report produced by the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at USC Annenberg confirms that only 1.3% of leading roles in Hollywood productions have Asian actors and over 50% of productions fail to include any Asian characters. The author, Dr. Stacy Smith states, “This is no mere diversity problem… this is an inclusion crisis.” If Hollywood were desegregated, the representation of a diverse society could be a powerful force to rapidly break down stereotypes and properly represent the true mosaic of U.S. society. The inaugural winner, in April 1969, was PH Newby, a BBC controller, for his work Something to Answer for (Stoddard 2014). Booker Prize Foundation is an independent registered charity funded by the entire profits of Booker Prize Trading Ltd., of which it is the sole shareholder.
