Its purpose is to give users an idea of the kinds of materials available from Hispanic American authors. It is not meant to represent all titles or all formats which relate to the literature by authors of Hispanic American heritage writing in the United States. Presence of a title in the bibliography does not imply a recommendation by the Iowa Department of Education. The non-fiction materials are in the order they might appear in a library based on the Dewey Decimal Classification systems; the fiction follows. In these margins, however, Chicana authors can dismantle stereotypes and construct new and empowering images of self. As an example of this kind of recreation of self through the act of writing, the poems of Lorna Dee Cervantes can serve as powerful examples. Many archetypal female figures have shaped the stereotypes of Chicano literature, the most influential being the story of "La Malinche," who acquiesces to sexual violation. Cervantes' early poem, "You Cramp My Style, Baby," attacks and denounces such sexual exploitation. In a later poem, "Emplumada," Cervantes' attack on the misogynous representations of "La Malinche" culminates in a complete revision of the character. The treatment of various images in the poem shows how Cervantes discovers and invents new inscriptions for the future. Thus, the second poem rewrites the female-male relationship that governed the earlier poem while simultaneously revising the legend of "La Malinche." (Twenty-two references are attached.) As ethnic poetry it is art that does not dwell in the region of purely detached art, "art for art's sake," but that necessarily attempts to establish its integrity in a particular territory and time. However, for Cervantes, the role of the ethnic writer intent on affirming a personal and group identity within a clearly defined temporal and spatial context is complicated by the fact that her sense of self as a woman does not conform to the traditions of her ethnic heritage.
