Age nine is a peculiar year to begin gymnastics. Most children start this sport between the ages of three and five. Coming into gymnastics after taking years of Irish dance, young Melissa Feuerborn was already at a disadvantage. Flash forward eight years and Melissa, a junior at Saint Thomas Aquinas, is a level 10 (highest level) gym- nast at Kansas Gymnastics and Cheer (KGDC). Her skill level is equivalent to students who had a six year head start. Melissa’s mom, Monica Feuerborn, enrolled Melissa into gymnastics after Melissa watched a friend’s gymnastics class and said it looked fun. “She just seemed to tumble and do cartwheels a lot so I switched her over (from Irish dance) to gymnastics,” Monica said. Over the past 24 years, 91 ban- ners have been mounted in Saint Thomas Aquinas’ main gym: two national championship, 70 state championship, and 20 runner-up banners. “Running out of room is not a bad thing.
