The Word from Fr. Pat

From the shining cloud the Father's voice is heard: This is my beloved Son, listen to him. cf. Matthew 17:15 Today’s Gospel Acclamation Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I know the question that is going to be on your minds this week: “Why on earth are they teaching us the Lord’s Prayer in Latin?” It’s a good question, and I’ll talk about that in a minute, but first I want to assure you of a few things. First, this is not a permanent change. The Sacred Liturgy gives us a whole host of options, and we should use all of them from time to time, so we will just be singing this in Latin for Easter Season (we are just teaching it during Lent). Second, this does not signal that we will be doing the whole Mass in Latin. Some people like that, but others don’t find it prayerful, and I understand both. Plus my own knowledge of Latin is limited, since I don’t have a gift for languages.

We often think that Vatican II did away with everything in Latin, but that’s not actually true. The document Sacrosanctum Concilium, the document on the Sacred Liturgy from Vatican II, says this: “Particular law remaining in force, the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites.” (36.1) It then goes on to pave a path for using the vernacular tongue (in our case, English) in various ways, but it was never envisioned to eliminate Latin completely. In fact, the only prayer in Latin currently in the Roman Missal is the Lord’s Prayer.

We can use Latin for other acclamations, and we will be doing that in the future. Again, that is always for a limited amount of time, and it doesn’t apply to everything we say or sing during that season. So this is just an occasion to do some Latin for a time.

Why do we do this at all? Let me tell you a story from my trip to Rome, back in the fall of 2016. One of the highlights, as you can imagine, was the Papal Audience. Thousands of people were there from all over the world. Many parts of the address were done in the various languages represented. The Gospel was read in the various languages, and there was even a brief synopsis of Pope Francis’s talk (which he gave in Italian) in the various languages. But then at the end, we did one thing together: we sang the Lord’s Prayer in Latin. I stumbled through it, because it’s been a long time since I’ve done that, and many didn’t sing it at all.

As I reflected on that experience, I realized there was a very good reason to sing the Lord’s Prayer in Latin: because it is a prayer we all knew, and singing it in Latin brought us together, all of us who were speaking so many different languages. So by doing this, I hope to accomplish a couple of things. First, if you ever have the occasion to go to Rome and attend a Papal Audience (and I hope you do!), you will have learned this enough that you won’t stumble through it as I did. And second, every time we sing any part of the Mass in Latin, I hope that it calls to mind our brothers and sisters all over the world, who are praying the Mass together, every day of the year. All of us are one in Christ.

So I hope you’ll give this a chance. I hope that you will find it prayerful, and that it will make you feel one with the Church. But even if it doesn’t, please know we’re not doing it forever. If you just can’t get it, I understand that, perhaps pray the Lord’s prayer silently in English as we sing. We’ll still be praying together!

Yours in Christ and His Blessed Mother, Father Pat Mulcahy, Pastor

P.S., There’s a really nice video of Pope Saint John Paul II leading the singing of the Pater Noster at a Mass at Saint Peter’s Basilica. Every time I watch it, it makes me smile. How wonderful that we can see a video of a saint singing a prayer with us! You can watch it at https://youtu.be/PyWBaIEkZ7w

And here is a help to the translation: Latin English PATER NOSTER, qui es in caelis, OUR FATHER, who art in heaven, sanctificetur nomen tuum. hallowed be thy name; Adveniat regnum tuum. thy kingdom come; Fiat voluntas tua, thy will be done sicut in caelo et in terra. on earth as it is in heaven. Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie, Give us this day our daily bread; et dimitte nobis debita nostra and forgive us our trespasses sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. as we forgive those who trespass against us; Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, and lead us not into temptation, sed libera nos a malo. Amen. but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Thank you to everyone who has already made a pledge to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Your gifts will benefit so many through the thirty ministries our annual appeal supports.

Our parish’s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $224,600.00. Our hope is that every parishioner will contribute as partners in caring, as every gift — large and small — makes a difference. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish!

Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year’s CMAA. In-pew envelopes are still available in the church, or you can make a gift online at jolietdioceseappeal.org.

First Saturday Devotion on March 3, after 7:30 AM Mass

The devotion of First Saturdays, as requested by Our Lady of Fatima, carries with it the assurance of the graces necessary for salvation at the hour of death. However, to derive profit from such a great promise of Our Lady, the devotion must be properly understood and duly performed. The requirements as stipulated by Our Lady are, on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months: Confession, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, and to do all these things in the spirit of reparation to my Immaculate Heart. Please join us for 7:30 AM Mass. The recitation of the Rosary will immediately follow in the Church. Healing Prayer Service Sunday, March 4, 1:30 PM Join us in the Church for a scripture reading & prayer followed by the opportunity to receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick which conveys special graces and strength of the Holy Spirit.
