At Ovid, we are committed to the idea and practice of experimenta- tion in many facets of grape growing and winemaking, in order to learn more about our land and what will make the very best wine. We conduct formal experiments in order to investigate specific topics, and we participate in a variety of academic and applied studies as well. Sometimes we simply follow our curiosity, trying things several different ways, in order to reach for what we hope will be possible in both the vineyard and the winery. Our Experiment wines are a product of this process.     NA0170 Frog’s Leap Winery in 2011— The Sustainability Agenda [Case and Video] Armand Gilinsky, Jr., Sonoma State University There’s an old saying in the wine industry that goes, “In order to make a small fortune you need to start out with a large one.” Unfortunately, I’d never heard of that “rule” before I started out. I came here to the Napa Valley 27 years ago with $40 in my pocket, sold my motorcycle for $5,000 to start a winery, and now I owe $22 million to the bank. And I still haven’t been able to buy back my motorcycle, because the current loan covenants with the bank do not permit me to ride, so I’m not sure that I am a success story, really. –John Williams, founder & CEO, Frog’s Leap Winery.1 rom the autumn of 1999 to late spring 2011, most Napa Valley premium wineries were embracing modernity—launching websites, using viral marketing, develop- Fing wine clubs, and shifting distribution channels from on–premises accounts to direct sales. John Williams, the co–founder, owner, and CEO/winemaker of Frog’s Leap Winery in Rutherford, California, had followed suit by making modest invest- ments in these marketing programs. Williams nevertheless remained skeptical that these changes would dictate his winery’s future. In May 2011, Williams reflected upon his heritage as the son of upstate New York dairy farmers and his 35 years’ working in the wine industry, since graduation from Cornell University. Williams not only displayed his normally irreverent humor, but also acknowledged that he had quietly developed the industry’s most sophisticated environmental management system.2 Environmental management systems (EMS) had risen in importance for wine businesses, as they con- fronted survival threats from the natural world, such as rising energy prices, water scarcity, mounting concerns about chemical exposure, and climate change.3 Yet Williams won- dered aloud: “How could Frog’s Leap, which has grabbed the ‘low–hanging fruit’ of environmental management, become even more sustainable?” See Exhibit 1 for a time- line of events in Frog’s Leap’s evolution.

At Ovid, we are committed to the idea and practice of experimentation in many facets of grape growing and winemaking, in order to learn more about our land and what will make the very best wine. We conduct formal experiments in order to investigate specific topics, and we participate in a variety of academic and applied studies as well. And we sometimes just indulge our curiosity by trying things several ways, in order to push what we know to be possible in both the vineyard and the winery. The duo of Experiment wines from 2006 pays respect to two of our greatest sources of inspiration: the two banks of the Gironde River. All of us at Ovid Napa Valley are drawn to the wines of Bordeaux, from Pomerol and St. Emilion on the Right Bank to Pauillac and St. Estephe on the Left Bank. Using the four varieties we have planted in our vine- yard as building blocks, we created two very different wines: Experiments No. D7.86 and No. M9.36. Together, these wines showcase the broad spectrum of possibilities that exist when producing Bordeaux-inspired wines from our unique terroir. tasting notes: D7.86 With a nod to the Right Bank, D7.86 brings forward the defining characteristics of two distinguished varieties: Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

    FEBRUARY 2014 NEWSLETTER Napa Valley: A wonderland of terroir Napa Valley is widely regarded as one of the finest grape-growing regions in the world. To our mind, what really stands it apart is its incredible diversity. Despite its diminutive size - just 30 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point - the region benefits from an incredible mix of climates, soils and elevations, allowing an array of grapes to thrive here - most prominently Cabernet Sauvignon, but also Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc. Napa Valley makes just 5% of the wine of Bordeaux by volume, and 25% of that of Burgundy, but has just as many varietals. (For more information on the climate and geology of Napa Valley and its sub-appellations (AVAs), please see our report Exploring Napa Valley: A Wonderland of Terroir.) Vineyards range in elevation from sea level to a whopping 2,600 ft One of Napa Valley's main differentiators is its topography. Nestled between two relatively high mountain ranges, vineyards range in elevation from sea level to a whopping 2,600 ft. By contrast, in Bordeaux the vast majority of vineyards are planted close to sea level and in Burgundy most vineyards sit on hillsides between 800-1,000 ft. This diversity in elevation, along with a variety of microclimates and soils, provides for incredible "range" even within single varietals.
