CD PROJEKT RED and NVIDIA Partner to Bring Ray Tracing to ‘Cyberpunk 2077’
CD PROJEKT RED and NVIDIA Partner to Bring Ray Tracing to ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Highly Acclaimed, Highly Anticipated Game Uses Real-Time Ray Tracing E3--NVIDIA and CD PROJEKT RED today announced that NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ is an official technology partner for Cyberpunk 2077 and that the companies are working together to bring real-time ray tracing to the game. Cyberpunk 2077 won over 100 awards at E3 2018 and Gamespot calls it “one of the most anticipated games of the decade.'' The game is the next project from CD PROJEKT RED, makers of the highly acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has won numerous “Game of the Year'' awards. NVIDIA and CD PROJEKT RED have a long history of technology collaboration that spans more than a decade. “Cyberpunk 2077 is an incredibly ambitious game, mixing first-person perspective and deep role-playing, while also creating an intricate and immersive world in which to tell its story,'' said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “We think the world of Cyberpunk will greatly benefit from the realistic lighting that ray tracing delivers.'' Ray tracing is the advanced graphics technique used to give movies their ultra-realistic visual effects. NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs contain specialized processor cores designed specifically to accelerate ray tracing so the visual effects in games can be rendered in real time. “Ray tracing allows us to realistically portray how light behaves in a crowded urban environment,'' says Adam Badowski, head of Studio at CD PROJEKT RED. “Thanks to this technology, we can add another layer of depth and verticality to the already impressive megacity the game takes place in.'' Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. -

056 – New Puzzle Videogames — 3/4
056 – New Puzzle videogames — 3/4 Here, a succinct review of different types of puzzle videogames published between 2001 and 2020. Not in chronological order. Single character control ● Antichamber – 2013 A first-person puzzle-platform game released for Microsoft Windows, Linux and OS X. Many of the puzzles are based on phenomena that occur within impossible objects created by the game engine, such as passages that lead the player to different locations depending on which way they face, and structures that seem otherwise impossible within normal three- dimensional space. The game includes elements of psychological exploration through brief messages of advice to help the player figure out solutions to the puzzles as well as adages for real life. The player controls the unnamed protagonist from a first- person perspective, in an environment full of obstacles. Upon completing a core set of puzzles, the player can access the exit door, upon which he starts to chase down a black cloudlike shape, using all the solving techniques learned before. Eventually he is able to capture the cloud as a black cube and enter a final, more expansive area, where the shape becomes a waiting shell. The shell creates a structure around it (similar to the game's logo) and sucks everything around it into its center, sending the screen to black and ending the game. ● Bobby Carrot – 2004 A video game series developed for iOS and as a WiiWare. The object of the game is to collect all of the carrots in an area and reach a point on the map that progresses the player to the next level. -

Playing With People’s Lives 1 Playing With People’s Lives How city-builder games portray the public and their role in the decision-making process Senior Honors Thesis, City & Regional Planning Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for graduation with honors research distinction in City and Regional Planning in the Knowlton School of Architecture at the Ohio State University By William Plumley The Ohio State University May 2018 Faculty Research Mentor: Professor Tijs van Maasakkers, City and Regional Planning Playing With People’s Lives 2 Abstract – City-builder computer games are an integral part of the city planning profession. Educators structure lessons around playtime to introduce planning concepts, professionals use the games as tools of visualization and public outreach, and the software of planners and decision-makers often takes inspiration from the genre. For the public, city-builders are a source of insight into what planners do, and the digital city’s residents show players what role they play in the urban decision-making process. However, criticisms persist through decades of literature from professionals and educators alike but are rarely explored in depth. Published research also ignores the genre’s diverse offerings in favor of focusing on the bestseller of the moment. This project explores how the public is presented in city-builder games, as individuals and as groups, the role the city plays in their lives, and their ability to express their opinions and participate in the process of planning and governance. To more-broadly evaluate the genre as it exists today, two industry-leading titles receiving the greatest attention by planners, SimCity and Cities: Skylines, were matched up with two less-conventional games with their own unique takes on the genre, Tropico 5 and Urban Empire. -

Knightmare Total
Interface Total Knightmare TOTAL KNIGHTMARE The perils of adapting video games for TV The creators of Knightmare and Last Commander describe the tricky process of introducing video game elements to television shows WRITTEN BY sk your average player what it is AARON POTTER they prefer about video games A compared to other forms of entertainment, and chances are that the word ‘interactive’ will eventually crop up. Where movies, television, and literature are generally passive, video games offer us the ability to affect their characters and locations with change – or at least the illusion of it. This hasn’t, however, stopped a small portion of producers from attempting to rework video game concepts for a television audience on numerous occasions. Games are tough to adapt in any medium, so we spoke to the few experienced creatives – past and present – with a track record of getting it right. There are two ways video games have surfaced on television over the years. We’ve seen shows centred on the discussion of video games (GamesMaster, Games World, and Gamezville, to name a few) and programmes that are either inspired by or directly focused on a single game or genre. The gap left by the former has unequivocally been filled by the glut of personality-driven channels on YouTube, but it’s in the latter where the idea has arguably been more fruitful. ITV’s Knightmare is perhaps the best example; between 1987 and 1994, it inspired the hearts of fantasy enthusiasts with its unique blend of real-space 28 / wfmag.cc Interface Total Knightmare wfmag.cc \ 29 Interface Total Knightmare In Last Commanders, Skye’s red attire was inspired by Claire Redfield’s look in dungeon crawling, puzzle-solving, and virtual appearing on computers like the BBC Micro, Resident Evil 2. -

The problems with this methodological bent become apparent when attempting to discuss the independent (“indie”) game genre, since, from 2010-2020 the indie game genre underwent a number of significant changes in aesthetic trends, many of which seem incoherent with one another. As such, the indie genre has received relatively little attention within the ludomusicological literature despite its enormous impact on broader gaming culture. By analyzing the growth of chiptune aesthetics beginning in 2008 and the subsequent fall from popularity towards 2020, this paper considers how a satisfying understanding of the indie game genre can be ascertained through its material cultures, rather than its aesthetics or gameplay. -
