This year COVID changed up the Bridges of the Butte event significantly from numerous participants riding 24 hours straight through, to an individual event over an extended period of time. Remarkably, Blunck managed to raise more money than ever before, earning the High Roller belt buckle for the sixth time.

Shortly after Mike Murphy arrived at the Adaptive Sports Center in September with Operation BASH, an unexpected snowstorm deposited 10” of snow overnight, making their planned outdoor activities impossible. “Our group faced adversity with this storm and we figured out how to overcome it together,” recalls Mike. This would symbolize what would become a theme for the week – adapt and overcome – a theme Mike knows much about.

In 2018, Mike was deployed overseas in Greece. As his team was traveling across an airfield, the driver of the vehicle slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting some stray dogs. The unexpected jolt threw Mike’s head into the front seat with a loud crack. He immediately blacked out and suffered a concussion. When he came to, he could

8 2020 FALL UPDATE barely see, but as he often says he “just decided to wing it,” and flew home to Albuquerque for Christmas, thinking his blurred vision was just temporary. He navigated through the airport by taking photos of the terminal, then putting the phone right up to his face so he could make his way to the right gate.

What he thought was temporary vision loss was eventually diagnosed as a traumatic brain injury. The swelling had damaged his optic nerve and sparked a genetic disease, resulting in an 80% loss of vision. He can only see shapes and shadows unless an object is within four inches of his eyes, as well as some peripheral vision. Mike and girlfriend, Carrie, during a snowshoe expedition.
