  • 10Th Muse Program2009.Pdf
A Note from Misha A Season of Wings Already you’re joining us for our second adventure. In November 2008 Divergence Vocal Theater premiered with The Ottavia Project. If this is your return visit with Diver- gence, thanks for joining us again. If this is your rst foray into our world: welcome. The 10th Muse has evolved into a sister performance to The Ottavia Project. It has felt a bit like giving birth to twins six months apart. Similar visual elements and dramatic themes emerge, and we continue to delve into relationships. This entire performance piece germinated from my going ga-ga over Gounod’s beau- tiful aria for Sapho, O ma lyre immortelle. That piece sent me down a rabbit hole rich with Gounod’s music and full of mythology--a realm I have always loved. Since Sapho was written for Pauline Viardot, the renowned 19th century Mezzo Diva (who doesn’t love a Mezzo Diva?), the music nerd in me wanted to include several of her works for piano and violin, as she was also an accomplished composer. So, you will hear her works alongside another (later) equally delicious female French composer, Lili Boulanger. I discovered Jill Alexander Essbaum’s poetry when I heard her read at a literary salon here in Houston. I fell head-over-heels-at-rst-sight and knew immediately she must be included in this performance. Please welcome her as our rst season’s Poetess-in- Residence. In mining Sapho’s works for this performance, I decided to write my own “versions” of her fragments, heavily inspired by both Julia Dubno and Anne Carson’s exquiste translations.

  • Beauty and the Beast
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: BELLE (Stage Age: 18-30) Belle is the original fairy tale heroine–kind, gentle, and beautiful–but with an important 21st Century twist. She is a strong, intelligent, spirited and independent young woman. Belle is the moral conscience of the story, elevated by her thoughts and deeds. The maturity and depth of her character allow her to see the true beauty and spirit within The Beast, and to love him for it. This role requires a very strong singer who portrays innocence with her singing and speaking voice. MezzoSoprano: Low A-High F THE BEAST (Stage Age: 21-35) The Beast’s tortured soul is evident for all to see. He is paying the ultimate price for a moment of mean-spiritedness, and wishes beyond wishing that he could rectify his mistake. There is anger and menace in The Beast’s appearance and behavior, but increasingly we see his soft and endearing side as he interacts with Belle. It becomes clear that he is a loving, feeling, human being trapped within a hideous creature’s body. This role requires a very strong singer, and the actor must have a strong speaking voice and stage presence. Baritone: A–High F GASTON (Stage Age: 21-35) Gaston is the absolute antithesis of The Beast. Although he is physically handsome, he is shallow, completely self-centered, not very bright, and thrives on attention. However, when his ego is bruised he becomes a very dangerous foe for The Beast, Belle and Maurice. This role requires a strong singer and character actor who moves well.

Houston Grand Opera Presents Götterdämmerung (April 22–May 7) and The Abduction from the Seraglio (April 28–May 12) Spring repertory showcases spectacular final installment of Wagner Ring cycle and Mozart comic masterpiece Houston, March 7, 2017—Houston Grand Opera presents Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods), the final installment of Wagner’s epic Ring cycle, featuring a new generation of leading Wagnerians including Simon O’Neill as Siegfried and Christine Goerke as Brünnhilde, starting April 22. Mozart’s zany yet deeply emotive comedy, The Abduction from the Seraglio —featuring Russian coloratura soprano and HGO Studio alumna Albina Shagimuratova as Konstanze and leading American tenor Lawrence Brownlee as Belmonte in HGO’s inventive 2002 co-production—will close the company’s mainstage season, beginning April 28. HGO’s four-year mounting of Wagner’s epic cycle reaches its thunderous climax this season with Götterdämmerung in the dazzling La Fura dels Baus staging, directed by Carlus Padrissa. The heroic Siegfried gives Brünnhilde the ring as a token of their love, but they unexpectedly face challenges beyond their control. In the definitive act of self- sacrifice, Brünnhilde returns the universe to its natural order. The Rhine overflows, Valhalla burns, and the kingdom of the gods is destroyed. New Zealand tenor Simon O’Neill takes on the role of Siegfried with “a sound to give one real hope for the healthy future of [Wagnerian] singing” (International Record Review). Superstar soprano Christine Goerke returns as Brünnhilde; of her portrayal in HGO’s Die Walküre in 2015, Opera News wrote, “beyond the power and warmth of her voice, Goerke’s vigorous performance radiated brash confidence.” Italian bass Andrea Silvestrelli, who sang Fafner in Das Rheingold and Siegfried, returns as Hagen, and bass-baritone and HGO Studio alumnus Ryan McKinny, who performed Donner in Das Rheingold, portrays Gunther.
