'Pinky' Deras: the Greatest Little Leaguer There Ever Was
August 21, 2010 http://detnews.com/article/20100821/SPORTS07/8210322 'Pinky' Deras: The greatest Little Leaguer there ever was TED KULFAN The Detroit News Hamtramck -- "Gifted, phenomenal, amazing." Tom Paciorek, the longtime major league outfielder, kept using those words, but not about one of his numerous All-Star teammates in the major leagues. Paciorek, who started his career on the fields of Hamtramck, was talking about Art Deras. Or, as many of that era knew him, "Pinky" Deras. "He was just better than the rest of us, it's that simple," said Paciorek, who played on a national title-winning Hamtramck Pony League team with Deras in 1961. "I say this to everybody who listens to me, and I'm not the only one to think or say this: Pinky was the greatest 12-year-old ballplayer who ever lived." It was Deras who led Hamtramck to the 1959 Little League World Series title. It remains the only Michigan team to win. "We were good, but Pinky just had that much more talent," said Mark Modich, a teammate of Deras' from age 9 through 18 on various Hamtramck teams. "Artie was just a little bigger, taller, stronger. You'd look at us and we were like runts. He was a whole head bigger. "He had a lot of talent for that age." Nearly unhittable Deras' exploits are chronicled in the documentary, "The Legend of Pinky Deras: The Greatest Little-Leaguer There Ever Was," which will premiere Monday night at the Hamtramck Community Center. The 64-year-old Deras, however, isn't comfortable talking about himself or his Little League exploits. -

Swinging for the Fence: a Call for Institutional Reform As Dominican Boys Risk Their Futures for a Chance in Major League Baseball
SWINGING FOR THE FENCE: A CALL FOR INSTITUTIONAL REFORM AS DOMINICAN BOYS RISK THEIR FUTURES FOR A CHANCE IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DIANA L. SPAGNUOLO* You drive around and look at local ballfields in this country and you'll find they are empty.... That's what I love about going to Latin American countries, places like the Domini- can Republic. It's like going back in time, the way it was here in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. The 27-year-old recorded the best start of his career Wednesday against Washington. Facing the team that drafted him, he permitted just one hit and one walk in seven scoreless innings. Had he remained on schedule, Meyer would have next started Wednesday in Cleveland. Because of their recent off days, the Angels do not need to replace him on their roster until Saturday in Toronto. When the Angels acquired Meyer from Minnesota on Aug. 1 last year, he was recovering from a shoulder injury that had forced him to miss most of the season. -
Ryan King-White Dissertation
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: BASEBALL, CITIZENSHIP, AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN GEORGE W. BUSH’S AMERICA Ryan Edward King‐White, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor David L. Andrews Department of Kinesiology The four separate, but related, studies within this research project seek to offer a critical understanding for how American national identit(ies), and particular forms of (cultural) citizenship are discursively constructed and performed in and through the sport of baseball. More specifically, this dissertation will utilize and expand upon critical theories of neoliberalism, citizenship, whiteness, and (physical) cultural studies to engage various empirical sites, which help provide the context for everyday life in contemporary America. Each chapter looks at various empirical aspects of the Little League World Series and the fans of the Boston Red Sox (popularly referred to as Red Sox Nation) that have historically privileged particular performances and behaviors often associated with white, American, heterosexual, upper‐middle class, masculine subject‐positions. In the first instance this project also attempts to describe how ‘normalized’ American citizenship is being (re)shaped in and through the sport of baseball. Secondly, I aim to critically evaluate claims made by both Little League Baseball, and the Boston Red Sox organization, in response to (popular) criticisms (Bryant, 20002; Mosher, 2001a, 2001b, 2001c) of regressive activity and behavior historically related to their organizations, that they -
