Thursday Sports with Buddy Long (Click Here)

Not a good day in the majors on Wednesday if you’re a with the last name Gonzalez!!!

Hello Sports Fans, I’m Buddy Long. And THIS is the Thursday August 1st edition of Southern Maryland Sports.

Jason Castro hit a 2 out , his 13th homer of the year, helping the to an 11-0 blowout of the in Game 2 of a 3 game series Wednesday evening at Camden Yards. Miguel Gonzalez was rocked for 9 runs on 9 hits in the loss. All in all, the Astros ended up with 11 runs off of 15 hits in the lopsided victory.

Now prior to the game, the Orioles traded for Astros starting pitcher Bud Norris. With the 2 teams currently playing each other, Norris’s trip to the Orioles was pretty much across the hall from 1 locker room to the other. The Orioles traded L.J. Hoes, minor league prospect , as well as a future draft pick in exchange for Norris. The former Astro pitcher is currently 6-9, sporting a 3.93 ERA. Norris will start the rubber match for the Orioles tonight as Baltimore placed starter Jason Hammel on the 15 Day DL with a flexor strain. The rotation will currently include Chris Tillman, Miguel Gonzalez, Wei-Yen Chen, and recently acquired , along with Norris. The 2 teams will wrap up their 3 games series tonight at Camden Yards with the Seattle Mariners coming to town for a weekend set.

For the second time in as many days, Alex Avila homered for Detroit, helping power the Tigers to a dominating 11-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. Gio Gonzalez was hammered for 10 earned runs as the Nats dropped the 2 game set in Detroit. The loss drops Washington to 52-56, 4 games under the .500 mark. The team will now head to Milwaukee today to begin a weekend series with the Brewers.

The Nats made no moves prior to the Trading Deadline, feeling most comfortable with the nucleus of the team.

5 Blue Crab combined for a 1 hit shutout as Southern Maryland topped the Long Island Ducks 1-0 last night. The Blue Crabs improve to 11-15 as they finish up a 4 game set with the Ducks tonight before wrapping up their 11 game road trip with a weekend set at the Somerset Patriots.

Redskins Training Camp continued Wednesday in Richmond, Virginia, under somewhat quieter circumstances from an injury standpoint. Left Tackle Trent Williams continued to nurse his ailing wrist. Otherwise, the focus was on the continued rehab for both Linebacker Brian Orapko, as well as Tight End Fred Davis, both of whom missed the bulk of last season. A healthy Fred Davis will be enormous for Quarterback Robert Griffin III, especially with a depth chart including Niles Paul and Logan Paulson.

Pre Season Game #1 for the Skins will be Thursday August 8 at the Tennessee Titans.

The Ravens continued Training Camp in Owings Mills on Wednesday as well with Fullback Vonta Leach joining the practice session after successfully passing his physical. Leach signed a 2 year deal with the team, and will now begin the process of meshing in with the offense as a huge blocking presence for Running Back Ray Rice.

Pre Season Game #1 for the Ravens will be Thursday August 8 at Tampa Bay.

The Washington Wizards solidified the future health of the organization
