Jack was a Welsh ex-miner; Jack Webber was born in 1907 into a Christian family, but was introduced to Spiritualism through his wife's acceptance of this. He discovered his mediumistic abilities when attending a home circle, and messages began to flow through table- tipping; in time, he developed trance, and following his guide's instructions, 'development came quickly and levitation of the trumpets and objects followed soon after'.(1) Subsequently, he developed healing faculties. His mediumship continued to develop until a stage when communicators' voices not only spoke through the trumpets, but independently of them, and there were also materializations. As a number of other physical mediums, he was accompanied by noises, object movement and voices when he was not conducting a séance, and his presence also affected nearby electrical apparatus. Jack Webber demonstrated his mediumistic abilities throughout this country in home circles, and in public demonstrations to as many as five hundred persons; shortly before his passing, he gave up to two hundred being secured during a demonstration as he was conscious of the possibility that accusations of fraud could be made against him. Maurice Barbanell was one person who testified to what he witnessed during a séance with Jack Webber as the medium; in this, infra-red photography was permitted and high quality photographs were taken of trumpets, levitated by the ectoplasm originating from the medium, and of table levitation.

    FOREWORD My close friend Betty Shine has an appropriate surname. Good humour, bubbling energy and down-to-earth honesty seem to radiate from her warm and attractive personality, making her any child's idea of the perfect aunty. Over the years, Betty has been kind enough to give me healing on many occasions. Usually, I arrive at her home with my energy reserves seriously depleted and in a low state of health. When I leave her, I invariably feel marvellously renewed, refreshed and once again ready to continue whatever task life has set for me. For those healing sessions and for her cheerful loyal friendship I shall always be in her debt. No matter how remarkable you may consider the evidence in this book to be, it cannot convey all the extraordinary abilities and gifts which Betty has in abundance. To appreciate these rare qualities you must meet her yourself. If you are lucky enough to do so, you will know exactly what I mean. Betty Shine has many things to say. These are the results of years of concentrated effort and hard work. Being Betty, my friend writes in the same way that she thinks and speaks: straight out, with no mumbo-jumbo. This is a rare book, written by a rare person. I know that you will enjoy reading it, many times. My wife and I will never forget the look of blessed relief on our daughter Marylla's face when, despite long journeys throughout the storms of that grim winter, Betty came many miles to give her healing.

    Theoretical CONSCIOUSNESS AND COGNITION IN ALTERNATIVE HEALERS: AN INTERIM REpORT ON RESEARCH INTO THE RELATIONSHIP OF BELIEF, HEALING, AND PURPORTED SUBTLE ENERGIES M. Allan Cooperstein, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This ongoing research explores the psychological associated with the attempts of individuals who attempt to beneficially influence physiology of living organisms through such methods as wishing, laying-on of hands, prayer, and the purported transfer of subtle "energy." Participants met specific criteria of social and/or scientific acceptability. A multiphasic research approach is explored in which the writings of a variety of healers were analyzed. A content analysis of the writings of 3 scholarly healer-researchers clarified and objectified healers' esoteric language, and an experiential inventory was developed. A systematic analysis was then performed using 10 books wrinen by well known healers in combination with 10 taped interviews of individuals who demonstrated healing (or biological influencing) under controlled conditions. Interviewees also ranked the importance of each major area of consciousness. Ranked averages indicate that the principal features of Transpersonal Healing (TH) are alterations in attention, cognitive processes and sense of self. Qualitative analysis reveals that TH involves self-regulation of attention, physiology, and cognition, the induction of altered awareness and reorganization of the healer's construction of cultural and personal realities. Attention is directed towards intrapsychic processes, resulting in (1) increased accessibility of subconscious materials, (2) enhanced empathy, (3) heightened emotional responses. (4) modified aHirudes. (5) altered meanings, and (6) distortions in time sense. Most significant among ontologic changes is a modification. or transcendence. of the healers' ordinary sense of self and absorption within functional beliefs.
