South Coast Plain Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper,1 Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention,3 we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas North (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which East follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. Yorkshire & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform West their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a East landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage Midlands broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will West also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. Midlands East of Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features England that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each London area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental South East Opportunity (SEOs) are suggested, which draw on this integrated information. South West The SEOs offer guidance on the critical issues, which could help to achieve sustainable growth and a more secure environmental future. -

www.natureswayresources.com GREENSAND Greensand is a naturallyoccurring mineral mined from ocean deposits from a sedimentary rock known as “Glauconite”. It is often an olive-green colored sandstonerock found in layers in many sedimentary rock formations. Origin of Greensand Greensand forms in anoxic (without oxygen) marine environments that are rich in organic detritus and low in sedimentary inputs. Some greensands contain marine fossils (i.e. New Jersey Greensand). Greensand has been found in deposits all over the world. The greenish color comes from the mineral glauconite and iron potassiumsilicate that weathers and breaks down releasing the stored minerals. The color may range from a dark greenish gray, green-black to blue-green dependingon the minerals and water content. Brickearth Soils in the South-East New Forest Are Well Drained
BRIGKEARTH, AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE CHARACTER OF SOILS, IN THE SOUTH-EAST NEW FOREST By G. C. FISHER I. INTRODUCTION BRICKEARTH is an indefinite geological term applied to loamy, superficial deposits of Quaternary age. Structureless deposits of brickearth are common in Southern and Eastern England and in most, particles in the size range iojxm to 200(j.m are dominant. The Geological Survey maps a number of patches of brickearth in the south western New Forest, most notably at Barton-on-Sea. Additional deposits of brickearth have been described from the New Forest (White 1915, Everard 1952, Lewin 1966a) and the author records several more in this paper for the south-east of the area. The first aim of the work here recorded was to determine the extent of brickearth deposits in the south-east corner of the New Forest. Everard (1952) provides a very general map of brickearth distribution around Southampton Water which shows a large deposit at Fawley not recorded by the Geological Survey. As well as adding to the map of Everard an attempt was made to locate shallow deposits of brickearth, not mappable by the geologist, but which may make an important contribution to soils. A further aim of the work was to try and determine the origin of the brickearth. Some brickearths have been described, especially from Kent (Pitcher et al 1954, Dines et al 1954), which have a particle size distribution which shows them to be true loesses, i.e. 50 per cent of the particles have diameters in the range 10 |un to 50 (im (Russell 1944, Pecsi 1968). -

This aims to align this BAP with the Sussex Biodiversity Action Plan. The document also demonstrates the Board’s commitment to fulfilling its duty as a public body under the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 to conserve biodiversity. Many of the Board’s activities have benefits and opportunities for biodiversity, not least its water level management and ditch maintenance work. It is hoped that this Biodiversity Action Plan will help the Board to maximise the biodiversity benefits from its activities and demonstrate its contribution to the Government’s UK Biodiversity Action Plan targets as part of the Biodiversity 2020 strategy. The Board has adopted the Biodiversity Action Plan as one of its policies and subject to available resources is committed to its implementation. Introduction and Definition One of the most urgent environmental problems we are facing in the 21 st Century is the loss of global biodiversity. As 90% of the population live in cities, towns and villages, it is here that this loss will have the most impact on our quality of life. The increasing density and the intensity of urban living has a major impact on the environment and our use of natural resources. Although we are part of the problem, we are also part of the solution. People and Wildlife : Biodiversity Action Plan for the Urban Areas of Sussex sets out the action necessary to maintain and enhance the variety of life all around us. The underlying principle of People and Wildlife (Sussex Urban BAP) is that a healthy environment is an essential requirement for both our quality of life and for wildlife. We can achieve this through changing our attitudes and actions towards the natural environment within our everyday lives by: • Encouraging everyone to make environmentally informed decisions as our actions can and do affect the environment; • Looking at actions we can take as individuals or as members of a community based group, part of a school or college, employer or employee of a business or as decision-makers who help shape local policies; • Recognising that biodiversity is an essential indicator of the health of the environment and hence our quality of life.
