It is not known who this ruler was, he is known only from his coins. The fact, however, that he calls himself the “sultan son of the sultan” suggests that he may have been a son of Tughril, lucky enough to survive the purge on the 51 family and adherents wrought by Balban; and that, once Balban was dead, he seized power in Lakhnauti from Balban's son Bughra Khan. Whatever the case, his reign was brief. What is interesting is that his coins and those issued by his successors for the next few years all claim to have been struck from the land-tax of Banga or eastern Bengal. They must have been making incursions into that country with the aim of seizing booty, especially silver which would have been channelled into eastern Bengal from the supply route from Yunnan and Burma. 52 Estimate: ` 80,000-90,000 52 Rukn-ud-Din Kaikaus (AH 689-700, 1290-1300 AD), Silver Tanka, 11.11g, Lakhnauti Mint, from the land tax of Banga, al imam legend with caliph al Must'asim, AH 690 (G&G B88). Aurangzeb after ascending the throne of Delhi ordered Mir Jumla to invade Cooch Behar and Assam and re-establish Mughal prestige in eastern India. 423 Mir Jumla entered Assam in the beginning of 1662 AD and was able to easily overcome the ressistance of the Assamese at the garrisons between Manaha and Guwahati. But not long after, the torrential rain and violence of the rivers caused immense hardship to the Mughals, their communication with the Imperial fleet had completely been disrupted. A treaty was signed between the Mughals and the Ahoms. But by 1667 the Ahoms fought back 424 the Mughals and were able to push them back upto Manaha river, the old boundary between Assam and Mughal India.
