Herman Miller’s Founder & Designers: (l to r) Robert Propst, Alexander Girard, George Nelson, DJ De Pree, Ray Eames & Charles Eames Our Heritage Herman Miller began as the Star Furniture Company which opened in 1905 in Zeeland, Michigan. In 1923 a clerk 4 employed by the company, D.J. De Pree, convinced his father-in-law whose name was Herman Miller to purchase the majority of the shares in the company. De Pree decided to name the company after his father-in-law and Herman Miller was born. The company initially produced replica traditional wooden furniture but from 1924, following the appointment of the designer Gilbert Rohde, a line of original modern furniture was introduced. In 1945 De Pree hired George Nelson as the company’s first design director, and this started the tradition of working with leading designers including Charles and Ray Eames and Alexander Girard, which continues to the present day. In the 1960s, Herman Miller introduced the Action Office System, the world’s first open-plan modular system of panels and attaching components. Designed by Robert 5 Propst, Action Office revolutionised office design and spawned a whole new industry. Herman Miller Archive Advertisements: 3. 1952 4. 1953 5. The company continued to expand over the next forty-five years adding offices, manufacturing and logistics facilities in Chippenham. In 2015, Herman Miller’s ongoing commitment to UK manufacturing was confirmed by a custom-built 170,000 square foot facility, designed by leading architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw. This new building combined the activities from the other sites. By bringing wood processing, chair assembly, logistics, research and development, and operations under one roof, our staff are able to work together more closely, better serving our customers with faster, more efficient solutions. PortalMill is just one of Herman Miller’s spaces around the world. In addition to spaces in North America, including our global headquarters in Zeeland, Michigan, there are showrooms in London, Dubai, Milan, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney, Mexico City and Sao Paolo. Coupled with 5 these spaces are manufacturing and assembly plants in the UK, USA, India, China, Brazil and Mexico. Introduction 7 1 2 1. Soludos Studio, USA 2. RIBA Incubator, London 3.
