Off track thoroughbred challenge

This event was initiated in the summer of 2017. Qualified individuals purchased a retired thoroughbred racehorse and began the retraining process in February 2018. Now the culmination of that retraining will be showcased in 5 different disciplines during the Equine Expo.

Trainer Challenge participant Jason Irwin

Jason Irwin started his first colt when he was twelve and has been at it ever since. He is a self taught trainer who has put the foundation training on hundreds of young horses.

Although originally from Prince Edward Island, Jason has been the trainer at the family business Northstar Livestock, which is based out of Port Elgin, Ontario, for the last twenty years. Northstar Livestock raises quarter horses – specializing in big fancy blue roans that sell throughout North America.

Jason, along with his wife Bronwyn, teach twenty- plus horsemanship and liberty training clinics a year.

Although his specialty is starting colts under Jason also works with problem horses, adds finishing excel in everything from barrel racing to ranch work training to older horses, competes in colt starting to to performing in drill teams and just competitions, and trains liberty horses. about everything in between. Equine Extravaganza

Friday & Saturday - 8:00 PM The 2019 Equine Extravaganza is shaping up to be another entertaining evening of equine excellence.

Saskatchewan 4-H and Pony Club will start the evening with a demonstration of some components of these two organizations. Our Off Track Thoroughbred participants will take the arena next and will highlight the diversity of these horses that are destined to go on to another career. has become the hottest new discipline in the equine world and an enthusiastic group will demonstrate the skills required.

The Prairie Club are sure to be a crowd pleaser with a variety of types of horses and carriages.

Reining is one of eight recognized disciplines at the FEI World Equestrian Games. To showcase this popular event, Vicki Braun will demonstrate both her expertise and her horse’s athleticism.

Speed and accuracy will bring the event to an end with barrel racing and mounted shooting.

REMEMBER: A separate ticket is required for the evening performance. If you do not have a ticket stop by the show office in Hall B to see if any tickets are available.

FREE viewing of the Equine Extravaganza will be in Hall C, WTC Saskatoon at Prairieland Park. Patrons to the show can enjoy a professional quality live video on a big-screen throughout the weekend in Hall C. The evening performance of the Equine Extravaganza will also be shown on both evenings. Food and beverage service will be available for attendees throughout the day. 16

Amos Abrahamson lives near Maple Creek, Sk where he operates Diamond J Performance Horses. Amos grew up on a ranch south of Saskatoon, Sk.

As a young boy, his grandfather bought him a horse which began his passion for horses. Amos started his first colt when he was 15 years old.

After graduating high school, Amos took a job riding at the Bitter Lake Community Pasture near Maple Creek, SK. Here he learned the skills of training top notch ranch and cow horses. Through the years, Amos has had the privilege of riding with and gaining skills from many seasoned cowboys.
