SALi DIESEL-ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE Empresa Ferroviaria Andina S.A, Bolivia At the end of 2017, the Andina-FCA Railway Company and Stadler Valencia signed a contract for the supply of the first three SALi locomotives to be used for freight transport services on its metric gauge railway network in Bolivia. SALi is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive with an ultra-lightweight design and with forefront technology, to successfully face the challenges entailed in operating on metre-gauge networks under conditions of great altitude (over 5,000 metres above sea-level) at a maximum speed of 100km/h, combining a high-power output at great altitude with reduced fuel consumption. It features 6 AC traction motors and two acoustic and heat-insulated driver’s cabs, to enhance comfort under extreme temperature conditions. If the instructions and advice given in this book are carefully followed your Sentinel Locomotive will not fail to give good and faithful service and will no doubt earn the affection of its operators and all those concerned with it, as all good machines should. The object of this book is to help all those connected with the locomotive to give it the best possible treatment so that the locomotive may also give its best in return. In order to give operators full advantage of new developments in the locomotive itself or in repair technique or modifications, we propose to send out Service Bulletins from time to time so that everyone may be fully informed of developments. You are cordially invited to write to us if you experience any difficulties in following any of the instructions given in this book or if you require any additional information on subjects not covered. On receipt of your queries we will fully reply to your questions and if it is of general topical interest we will send out a Service Bulletin on the subject raised. By this method we hope to form a fraternity of Sentinel operators. We have kept the size of this book to reasonable proportions so that it can be carried readily in the pocket. In order to achieve this we have not reproduced detailed drawings for each section as this would increase the size of the book considerably. -

BUILDERS OF COLORADO OFFICE OF ARCHEOLOGY AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH COLORADO HISTORICAL SOCIETY Firm: Baldwin Locomotive Works Location: Philadelphia (Eddystone, PA, in 1912) Operating Dates: 1831-1956 Principals: Matthias W. Baldwin Information Jeweler and silversmith Matthias Baldwin founded the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1831. The original manufacturing plant was on Broad Street in Philadelphia where the company did business for 71 years until moving in 1912 to Eddystone, PA. Baldwin made its reputation building steam locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and many of the other North American railroads, as well as for overseas railroads in England, France, India, Haiti and Egypt. Baldwin locomotives found their way onto the tracks of most Colorado railroads, both standard and narrow gauge. Baldwin built a huge number of 4-4-0 American type locomotives, but was perhaps best known for the 2-8-2 Mikado (D&RGW No. 491) and 2-8-0 Consolidation types (D&RGW No. 346 and DSP&P No. 191).1 It was also well known for the unique cab-forward 4-8-8-2 articulated locomotives built for the Southern Pacific Railroad and the massive 2-10-2 engines for the Santa Fe Railroad. One of Baldwin's last new and improved locomotive designs was the 4-8-4 (Northern) locomotive (Santa Fe No. 2911). In 1939, Baldwin offered its first standard line of diesel locomotives, all designed for rail yard service. Two years later, America's entry into World War II destroyed Baldwin's diesel development program when the War Production Board dictated that ALCO (American Locomotive Company) and Baldwin produce only diesel-electric yard switching engines. -

Unauthorized duplication or distribution is strictly prohibited. Introduction The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has always been a symbol of Canada's nation-building experience. Poets, musicians, politicians, historians, and writers have lauded the railway as one of the country's greatest achievements. Indeed, the transcontinental railway was a remarkable accomplishment: its managers, engineers, and workers overcame incredible obstacles to throw the iron track across seemingly impenetrable bogs and forests, expansive prairies, and nearly impassable mountains. The cost in money, human energy, and lives was enormous. Completed in 1885, the CPR was one of the most important instruments by which fledgling Canada realized a vision implicit in the Confederation agreement of 1867-the building of a nation from sea to sea. In the fulfilment of this dream, the CPR, and subsequently the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk systems, allowed the easy interchange of people, ideas, and goods across a vast continent; they permitted the settlement of the Western interior and the Pacific coast; and they facilitated the integration of Atlantic Canada with the nation's heartland. In sum, by expediting commercial, political, and cultural intercourse among Canada's diverse regions, the transcontinentals in general, and the CPR in particular, strengthened the nation. Historiography The first scholarly historical analysis of the Canadian Pacific Railway was Harold Innis's A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In his daunting account of contracts, passenger traffic, freight rates, and profits, he drew some sweeping conclusions. -

JONES a landscape of energy abundance: ANTHRACITE Downloaded from COAL CANALS AND THE ROOTS OF AMERICAN FOSSIL FUEL DEPENDENCE, 1820–1860 envhis.oxfordjournals.org ABSTRACT Between 1820 and 1860, the construction of a network of coal-carrying canals transformed the society, economy, and environment of the eastern mid- Atlantic. Artificial waterways created a new built environment for the region, an energy landscape in which anthracite coal could be transported cheaply, reliably, at Harvard University Library on October 26, 2010 and in ever-increasing quantities. Flush with fossil fuel energy for the first time, mid-Atlantic residents experimented with new uses of coal in homes, iron forges, steam engines, and factories. Their efforts exceeded practically all expec- tations. Over the course of four decades, shipments of anthracite coal increased exponentially, helping turn a rural and commercial economy into an urban and industrial one. This article examines the development of coal canals in the ante- bellum period to provide new insights into how and why Americans came to adopt fossil fuels, when and where this happened, and the social consequences of these developments. IN THE FIRST DECADES of the nineteenth century, Philadelphians had little use for anthracite coal.1 It was expensive, difficult to light, and considered more trouble than it was worth. When William Turnbull sold a few tons of anthracite to the city’s waterworks in 1806, the coal was tossed into the streets to be used as gravel because it would not ignite.2 In 1820, the delivery © 2010 The Author. Each of the four 7ft 6in rods weighs around two hundredweight and after forging, extensive machining and heat treatment, the four cost around £22,000 to manufacture. These rods are vital components within the £150,000 valve gear and motion assemblies, which are now the focus of work on Tornado at the Trust’s Darlington Locomotive Works. The Trust has also started work on the fitting of the rest of the outside motion. The bushes for the connecting rods are currently being machined at Ian Howitt Ltd, Wakefield and one side of the locomotive has now been fitted with a mock-up of parts of its valve gear. This is to enable accurate measurements to be taken to set the length of the eccentric rod as the traditional method of heating the rod to stretch/shrink it used when the original Peppercorn A1s were built in 1948/9 is no longer recommended as it can affect the rod’s metallurgical properties. -

It has been a very good year with a successful Open Weekend and a superb effort by all those involved in raising over £1000 in aid of cancer charities. If you haven’t already seen them, there are lots of pictures on the website. At present I’m keeping the pictures fairly small so they are easier to view as an album on screen. If anyone would like a higher resolution picture, I can put them in contact with the photographer. I tend to remove original pictures from my PC as they take up so much disc space. I have also posted a couple of videos on the website. These were taken by my son on his recent visit to the UK. They were taken by either an iPhone or digital still camera. The quality of these videos is better than my not very old dedicated video camera. It would appear to be very easy to take high quality video these days, I can edit them and even better YouTube will now post HD movies. I would love to get more videos on the website of up to about 2 or 3 minutes – so get recording and let me have the results.
