P17 Layout 1 SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2015 SPORTS Dunga aims to get Brazil back to winning ways SANTIAGO: Brazil come into the Copa America desperate to regain some international credibil- ity a year after they failed so miserably in their home World Cup. The Brazilians were hammered 7-1 by Germany in the semi-final and the defeat con- firmed the once great selecao were no longer a team to be feared and had instead become just another sometimes good, sometimes bad foot- balling nation. They will be buoyed by recent results, how- ever, with eight wins out of eight since Dunga took over following that drubbing. Moreover, the famously aggressive coach-in his second stint as national manager-has an enviable track record in the tournament, winning it in 2007 with an understrength side in Venezuela. This time around his side will be missing some key components with Real Madrid left back Marcelo and first-choice midfielder Luiz Gustavo withdrawing due to knocks. Goalkeeper Diego Alves also dropped out and Chelsea midfielder Oscar was left out of the squad to give him time to recover from injury. • FIFA World Cup 2018
JOSE RAMIREZ BARRETO Published on 17.6.18 Final-minute goals a common feature of almost all games so far A ready but cautious Brazil will begin their 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign against Switzerland on Sunday. Memories of that heart breaking 1-7 loss to Germany cannot have been easy to overcome but it’s something they have to put aside or it will not leave much room for an easy run through the group stage. Their preparations have gone to plan, with the focus more on tactical training as many of the players were coming off tough club seasons. Under coach Tite, the team has seen a turnaround, and what could have been a difficult road to Russia turned out to be a straightforward one. It’s really great to see the way the boys have responded to Tite. They are pushing themselves and working hard, and responsibly, to reach top form. They have carried their qualification form into the warm-ups over the last few weeks, and are displaying the right attitude and desire. And this means that fans are now again excited about their team. The defence of the team has proved to be unquestionable under Tite with a clean sheet in 16 games out of 21 games. From the middle to the front the performance of the new version of the “magic square”, formed by Neymar, Gabriel Jesus, Willian and Philippe Coutinho, has been indisputable. This tactic has been productive for the attack and it is the individual quality of the players that has brought the results.

MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2015 SPORTS England dump hosts Canada Canadians collapse in tears VANCOUVER: England scored twice in three first-half minutes then held on to beat hosts Canada 2-1 on Saturday and book a spot in the Women’s World Cup semi-finals against Japan. The hosts had been hoping to secure the semi-final spot against the defending champions on Canada Day, July 1, in Edmonton but instead it was England who moved into the last four of a World Cup for the first time. England coach Mark Sampson paid tribute to the opposi- tion and fans. “I have never been in a stadium as loud, as pas- sionate for their team as that was, they couldn’t have pushed us any further we had to really, really dig deep today to get the result we wanted,” he told reporters. “They’ve shown a desire I have never seen in an England team before to hang on in there and get us through to the next round.” Without a men’s or women’s World Cup title since 1966, and exasperated by another failure at the men’s U21 European Championships, the “Lionesses” have become the toast of England. “We’re history makers again, only the third England team to get to a semi-final, we have now joined that 1966 and 1990 club, very, very proud of the whole group,” beamed Sampson.
