(Ph.D. Journalism and Mass Communication) Publics and Counterpublics on the Front Page of the Internet: The Cultural Practices, Technological Affordances, Hybrid Economics and Politics of reddit’s Public Sphere Thesis directed by Associate Professor Kathleen M. Ryan This dissertation represents an in depth examination of the cultural practices, technological affordances and political economic forces that inform the publics and counterpublics formed on the website reddit. Through interpretivist netnography, textual analysis and document analysis, the research presented here establishes a variety of different events (both historical and contemporary) and discourses that have taken place on the site and shows how these events and discourses are emblematic of contemporary neoliberal ideologies. Drawing on the theoretical tradition of the “public sphere” established by Jürgen Habermas, this research concludes that reddit shows the potential for an effective public sphere through digital technology. However, despite this potential, much of the discourse on reddit reinforces traditional neoliberal ideologies; furthermore, actions on behalf of the administration, moderators and users on the sites also indicate that while reddit has afforded individuals the opportunity to change federal political policy, these events do not translate into an inclusive public sphere that escapes the neoliberal trappings of technological fetishism. ! ! ! DEDICATION This dissertation is dedicated to my loving wife, Jamie Springer. Without her continued support and patience over the last four years, none of this could have come to fruition. Thank you for listening to me. ! ! ! v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would first like to thank Dr. Kathleen M. Although he only answered ten questions, President Obama’s interaction with his citizenry through reddit represented an important juncture for the self-billed “front-page of the Internet.” Founded in 2005 by Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman, reddit has risen from a small tech start-up to one of the largest sites in the US. Fundamentally, reddit aggregates content submitted by users (either as external links to images, vidoes or articles, or as self-posts) and ranks it based on how users vote (upvote or downvote). Likewise, reddit users (redditors) can also vote on comments underneath each link or self-post. Through reddit’s interface, thousands of redditors expressed their opinions and directly posed questions to their sitting President, indicating the site’s potential for citizens to communicate with their governmental representation through the site. Generally conceived of as a discursive cultural form through which “publics” communicate their opinion to the state,

HOME> TECHNOLOGY Reddit, Google Crack Down on Posting Nude Pics SAN FRANCISCO — Feb 24, 2015, 8:03 PM ET By MICHAEL LIEDTKE AP Technology Writer S hare 0 Share on email 5 Comments Reddit and Google are taking a tougher stance against nudity to prevent their services from turning into online peep shows. Social-networking and news site Reddit says it will remove photos, videos and links with explicit content if the person in the image hasn't given permission for it to be posted. Google Inc., the Internet's most powerful company, is going to ban most nude photos and video from publicly accessible sites on its popular Blogger service. The crackdown marks a shift in attitude for two services that have traditionally been freewheeling forums where users could literally let it all hang out. The lax approach has opened the door for nude and sexually explicit photos and video to be posted on Reddit and Blogger, even if the subjects featured in the images intended them to remain private. Until now, Reddit has had a hands-off approach to privacy, largely allowing its 160 million users to police their own forums within certain guidelines such as no child pornography or spam. The change comes about six months after hackers obtained nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities and posted them to social media sites including Reddit and Twitter. Without specifically calling out Reddit or Twitter, Lawrence lashed out at the sites that permitted nude photos to be posted of her. She likened the unauthorized use of photos of her body as a "sex crime." A Tuesday posting signed by Reddit interim CEO Ellen Pao and other company executives said the shift is an effort to help grow the site "for the next 10 years and beyond." Effective March 10, Reddit will prohibit any photograph, video or digital image of a person who is nude or engaged in a sexual act if the subject hasn't given permission for it to be used.

The purpose and research question of this thesis was to study and analyse the impact of social media on the lives and aca- demic performance of students and to give recommendations on how to avoid the possi- ble negative effects and how to amplify the positives A specific focus was on the foreign students at LAB University of Applied Sciences which functioned as the case company. The study was performed using the qualitative method and utilizing a combination of pri- mary and secondary sources. The main primary source was a series of interviews con- ducted with these aforementioned foreign students. This data was then analysed by the- matic analysis and the results of it were compared with the literary sources. The results showed that social media has both positive and negative effects on the aca- demic performance. It allows for easy communication and can be a great source of infor- mation, but it can also lead to psychological issues such as addiction and falling victim to cyberbullying.

Advances in Economics, Business and Management Research, volume 118 International Conference on Management Science and Industrial Economy (MSIE 2019) Asian American Women Face the Bamboo Ceiling in American High- Tech Workplaces-Based on a case study of Ellen Pao v. Kleiner Perkins Leyi Cao Nanjing Foreign Language School, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, 210000, China [email protected] Keywords: Asian American women, Bamboo ceiling, US high-tech workplaces, Intersectionality. Abstract. In the 21st century, Asian American women, as a group, are considered to face certain barriers-the bamboo ceiling in US high-tech workplaces specifically. The existence of such barriers and the choice of action toward the barriers become what people concern most about. Based on these issues, this paper first analyzes data to reveal the overview of the current situation of Asian American women in American High-Tech workplaces and are shown from comparisons between different social groups. Moreover, the paper also discusses a specific case raised by an individual Asian American Women against her employer company. Based on further analysis of the case, which is combined with the concept of intersectionality, the paper suggests more considerations of intersectionality and encourages more actions of Asian American women fighting for equality. 1.Introduction The glass ceiling faced by Asian Americans in current US workplaces is often recognized as the bamboo ceiling, referring to the practices that keep Asians from entering higher-paying, and more prominent jobs. By further considering Asian American women as a social group, intersectionality, in this paper, is employed to recognizing the intersection of race and gender in this issue.

  • Reddit and Robinhood Vs. Investing for the Long Run
? Investment Insights Reddit and Robinhood vs. Investing for the Long Run Morningstar Investment Management Key Takeaways February 2021 × The recent meteoric rise and spectacular fall of stocks on Reddit and Robinhood should not present major risks to most investors, we believe, but this market behaviour is still concerning. For Financial Advisers & Their Clients × We view equity markets as a vehicle for investors to participate in the potential growth of companies whose stocks are attractively priced. Expecting massive, short-term price increases is speculation, not investing. × Young people with money to invest would do well to find a financial adviser who can help them develop a financial plan for their savings. Risky stock bets made to brag about on social media platforms might be more entertaining but won't likely serve them well in the long run. What happened on Reddit and why is stock speculation causing a stir in markets? Reddit is a much talked about social bookmarking platform, which attracts people in a forum like setting. As a collective, users have been active discussing stock opportunities and engaging in a Main Street versus Wall Street debate. Some people are putting their money where their mouth is, where we suddenly saw some selected small stocks spike tremendously, then fall spectacularly. It's like watching the price of any speculative asset, like Bitcoin—the market can bounce around without much reason. Specifically fueling the speculation around these stocks were individual traders. Not just any individuals. In fact, we see two trends here. First, social media like Reddit's WallStreetBets and other platforms drove much of the trading of these selected stocks, according to reports.

Abstract This work presents my PhD thesis about the influence of anonymity on par- ticipation in online environments. The starting point of this research was the observation of the design process of an online platform for informal caregivers. I realized that there is no knowledge about the practical effects that an anony- mous identity system would have. This thesis contains the subsequent literature review, which has been synthesized into a model that shows which participation factors might be influenced by anonymity. Three studies on existing online en- vironments have been conducted: One on Youtube, where there was a change in the comment system forbidding anonymous comments; one on Quora, where users can choose to answer questions anonymously; and one on Hacker News, where users choose how many identity factors they want to present and which name they use.

November 15, 2011 Hon. Patrick Leahy, Chairman Hon. Lamar Smith, Chairman Hon. Chuck Grassley, Ranking Hon. John Conyers Jr., Ranking Member Member Senate Judiciary Committee House Judiciary Committee 224 Dirksen Senate Office Building 2138 Rayburn House Office Building US Capitol US Capitol Washington, DC 20002 Washington, DC 20003 Dear Committee Chairmen, On behalf of the undersigned student and youth organizations, we are writing today to express our serious concerns about legislation being considered by the House and Senate in the name of fighting Internet piracy. We oppose, in their current forms, legislation approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee ( S. 968, the Protect IP Act) and legislation introduced by members of the House Judiciary Committee (HR 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act-SOPA) that, while pursuing the laudable goal of fighting Internet piracy, will curtail the legitimate free flow of information, hurt efforts to promote human rights, create undue censorship of legitimate websites and interfere with the growth of the Internet economy so important to our futures as young people. The Senate bill, while narrowed from earlier versions, contains many objectionable provisions including the DNS Internet blocking system that attacks the very foundation of the Internet address system and according to some will undermine security and the provision that specifically targets "Information Location Tools / Search Engines” that has the potential of crippling the gate ways to the Internet and its wealth of information by forcing the platforms we use to search for information to become censors rather than compasses. The House bill goes even further than its Senate counterpart by including an overly broad definition of an infringing website subject to immediate blocking.

Before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform January 18, 2012 1 Chairman Issa, Ranking Member Cummings, and Members of the Committee: Thank you for holding this hearing and extending to the American Civil Liberties Union the privilege of offering testimony. We oppose current proposals to take down infringing online content through Domain Name Service (DNS) and/or search engine blocking because such mechanisms assuredly will also block lawful non-infringing content. Moreover, current proposals fall short procedurally by failing to provide notice of the takedown to the owners or producers of such lawful content and by failing to provide those parties any opportunity to participate in the proceedings relevant to the restriction. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a non-partisan advocacy organization having more than a half million members, countless additional activists and supporters, and 53 affiliates nationwide. We are dedicated to the principles of individual rights, equality, and justice as set forth in the U. S. Constitution. For more than 90 years since its founding, the ACLU has been America’s leading defender of First Amendment free speech principles.
