While a sense of relief has come from the assurance of no more rounds of Knesset elections, this feeling is greatly overshadowed by the commencement of Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial. A long and hard road for the authorities. Israeli government lies ahead. A Comment On Australian Jewish Youth Movements Against Annexation Lior Kalisse

You may have noticed that on Monday (25th of May) we stood in solidarity with our fellow left-leaning movements in Habo and Hashi to publicly condemn Israel’s plan to possibly annex up to 30% of the West Bank. For many reasons, all of which you most likely have read in the statement itself, we thought it was crucial to draw this line in the sand and ensure Netzer was on the right side.

The decision, made within the Federal Hanhagah was not one that was taken lightly or without an idea of what our objectives were after releasing the statement. Much of this year’s agenda has been about putting our values into action. It’s why we launched/will be launching TOC, it’s why we think establishing an aliyah framework must be central to Netzer’s future and it’s why we have pursued facilitating the opening of a Tamar (Netzer’s young adult movement - exists in other countries) branch in Australia via the UPJ.

We know that without proper follow up, persistence and planning these kinds of statements will only fall flat. Solidarity alone has never been and will never be enough. This is why Liat, Michael S and I wrote a sincere and scathing letter to the UPJ, senior figures of every Progressive body and community in the region urging them to reconsider the need to appear ‘apolitical’. Since, we have received very positive feedback and we hope that this will ignite some conversation in the Proggy j-com not only on the topic itself but also the community’s stand on politics altogether.

Changing hearts and minds is a long process and the effort we began with this statement will outlive all our times as Netzer Bogrimot.

One note I’ll finish on is that unlike any other movement we have a seat at the table of our community (via the UPJ) and we’re being heard and taken more than seriously. I said earlier this year (Gibush-sem via video) that the future of our community is really in our hands like no other movement in Australia. This now, could not be more the case! It would be wasteful to miss such an epic opportunity to shape the future in our image. You’ll hear more on this in the future at seminars and possibly fed mo so stay tuned.

We often fear or draw comparisons to those that we believe we are already predisposed to being inferior to. The spies truly believed that the power and intellect of the Israelites was a force to be reckoned with, and even go as far as deprecating themselves as a result. Ultimately suffering the effects of the plague, perhaps this snapshot of the Parsha gives an insight into what is ultimately a natural human instinct and is a trait that humbles us into not taking on greater tasks. The lack of faith within themselves also translates as a lack of trust in God himself, and sends him into a rage and thus catalysing the plague. This week’s Parsha documents the event of Moses sending out 12 spies into the land of Canaan to The different and unique viewpoints of Jacob report on its inhabitants. It is also in this Parsha that Moses instructs the Israelites on conducting the Sabbath, including how to treat strangers and the laws of tzit-tzit. June 27th: Points to Ponder As theorised by Lisa Grushcow, Korach could be compared to many of the flawed leaders of the present day, and as one who confuses their own agenda with what is best for an entire nation. The Israeli philosopher Yeshayahu Leibowitz notes that Korach confuses achievement with aspiration; he does not understand that holiness is a process, and perfection is perpetually around the corner and just beyond our grasp.Rabbi Rachel Cowan suggests that each of us “live with an ongoing conflict between an ‘inner Moses’ and an ‘inner Korach’ — between humility and arrogance, between selflessness and selfishness”

Similar themes to the previous parshat emerge in Korach, as we are presented with a rebellion led by Korach and his followers, Dathan and Abiram, against the leadership of Moses and Aaron. According to Rabbi Lisa Grushcow, “Korach is a jealous demagogue, stirring up rebellion against Moses and Aaron in the desert”. Korach is motivated by, and feeds into, jealousy of Moses and Aaron: “Why then do you raise yourselves above the Eternal’s congregation?” (Numbers 16:3). He sees leadership as a right rather than as a responsibility to others and one’s self. This act however is condemned by God, and he punishes the rebels burying them and their families alive. God then brings yet another plague upon the people (16:1-17:15).
