Kirin, Mac and Julian Casablancas also recently colluded to produce the latest single ‘Did My Best’ for ‘The Voidz’. Earlier this month,Callinan has been filming the lead role in the debut feature film for acclaimed commercial director Daniel Askill. Askill directed the Grammy-nominated videos with Sia for ‘Chandelier’ and ‘Elastic Heart’. • Dance As Political Activism: Two Popular Choreomusical Re- Sponses to the Orlando Shooting
Anja Brunner, Hannes Liechti (Hg.). 2021. Pop – Power – Positions. Globale Beziehungen und populäre Musik (~Vibes – The IASPM D-A-CH Series 1). Chelsea Oden Dance as Political Activism: Two Popular Choreomusical Re- sponses to the Orlando Shooting Foreword A published paper is inherently limiting—it cannot truly show moving bodies, it cannot be conversational or self-reflexive. It cannot, in other words, substitute for interacting with hu- man beings. For these reasons, as I describe the physical body and more-than-two-dimension- al identities, I ask you, the reader, to go beyond the page. Watch the music videos, dance to the music, take careful notice of your own body, your own identity, to whose realness this article cannot do justice. Introduction On June 12, 2016, a 29-year old United States American man entered the Pulse gay bar and nightclub in Orlando, Florida. He was armed with two legally purchased firearms and took 49 lives, the majority of whom identified as queer persons of color. At the time, the Orlando mas- sacre was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States. It remains the country’s deadliest hate crime against the LGBTQIA+ community. Among mass media responses were two popular music videos that are noteworthy for the ways in which they unite music and dance in a political critique of the violence. The music video for Sia’s “The Greatest” (Sia et al. 2016) infuses its music with a queer choreographic aesthetic and uses a filming style that invites the spectator to participate in a communal response to the tragedy.

  • This Is Acting out Today Press Release January 29, 2016
SIA’S THIS IS ACTING AVAILABLE TODAY 1/29 EVERYWHERE ! What the press is saying about THIS IS ACTING: “On ‘Alive’ and ‘Space Between,’ Sia sings bloody murder in a way that surpasses her performances on even the more lyrically painful tracks she’s written for herself in the past. In the end, it feels totally apt that no one but Sia should sing these songs. The record cements an effect she’s been having on pop music ever since she began writing for major stars in 2009…they push the limits of your expectations, eschewing perfection in favor of representing the emotions at the heart of the song with unapologetic rawness. – The Fader “a fascinating study in what it’s like to live life imagining yourself in someone else’s artistic shoes…if this is acting, it’s the kind of performance that hits as hard as life itself.” - Rolling Stone “Sia's unbashed aim is uplift, and her feel for sing-along-until-your-neighbor-bangs-on-the-radiator hooks rarely falters."- Entertainment Weekly “Sia’s most prized songs aren’t just exercises in craftsmanship; they find some emotional truth." - NY Times “Sia’s pop anthems will have the other artist she originally wrote them for…kicking themselves for letting them get away. It swings from the marching ‘Reaper’ to the flying ‘Unstoppable,’ in which she preens, ‘I'll win every single game.’ Exactly.” – Us Weekly “She conveys liberty, stamina, agony, yearning, and devotion...an album filled with riveting pomp and circumstance." - Consequence of Sound "Sia isn’t so much a recording artist, she’s a recording art movement….By day, she is a guiding force for more extroverted major-label superstars; by night she’s defying their existence by singing the same songs in a way the commercial landscape never realized it was ready for."- Spin Magazine (New York – January 29, 2015) Singer/songwriter/producer/massive hitmaker Sia today releases her highly-anticipated new album THIS IS ACTING (Monkey Puzzle Records/RCA Records).

  • “New Sexual Contract”And Electronic Dance Music's Queered Femme
Post-Feminism’s “New Sexual Contract” and Electronic Dance Music’s Queered Femme Voices Feature Article Robin James UNC Charlotte (US) Abstract Angela McRobbie argues that post-feminism’s “new sexual contract” grants otherwise privileged white women the things traditionally denied women as a class, namely, economic success and self-ownership of their bodies as sexual property (McRobbie 2004). Because voice is commonly used as a metaphor for self-possessed agency, this article considers three ways white women and femme musicians across EDMC use vocal and authorial voices to reimagine post-feminist practices of self-ownership and property-in-person. Brooklyn band bottoms, Berlin techno collective Decon/Recon and Australian-American pop star Sia, all use voice to craft femininities that deviate from post-feminist gender norms and its “new sexual contract”: bottoms perform femininity as self-dispossession, Decon/Recon’s anonymous collective authorship centers women and femmes while de-centering private property, and Sia disconnects her voice from her person so that her performances of sonic resilience (James 2015) don’t labor upon her body and turn it into private property. Keywords: post-feminism, Sia, bottoms, Decon/Recon, queer Robin James is Associate Professor of philosophy at UNC Charlotte. She is author of three books, including The Sonic Episteme, which is under contract with Duke University Press. Her research spans topics in feminist theory, critical race theory, popular music studies and sound studies.
