Staff news

Mr Wooldridge has had a new addition to his family, a little girl Lucy born on 12th May. Mum and baby are doing well! Congratulations to the Wooldridge family.

Students raising funds for charity

Once again a group of Year 10 girls have organised a sponsored swim for charity, and together raised £260. This money will be divided between Cancer Relief, Chest & Heart and Cheshire Homes, and will obviously be gratefully received. Well done to Tonicha Topley, Tiegan Batiste, Savi Gow and Jade Ferbrache.

Accelerated Reader Programme

This term we have started using an online reading programme put together by Renaissance Learning. Mrs Henry spent a long time last term organising and labelling the appropriate library books and all of Year 7 did an online reading test. This gave them a ‘zone’ (a range of number numbers) to select their reading books from to suit their ability and help their reading to progress. When students finish a book, they take a quick online test on the book and receive a score and points. Points make prizes!

The programme is designed to improve reading with understanding and give us improved data on students, leading to better teaching and learning in all lessons, and therefore, ultimately, improved exam results. If you have a child in Year 7, please encourage them to read their chosen book in a quiet room for 20 minutes each night.

This scheme has been paid for using the money raised by last year’s West Coast Challenge Sponsored Walk – the date of this year’s walk is Friday 4th July. More details to follow...

Work related learning – Careers Department

St Sampson’s High School is very proud of the achievements of all of its students and especially our Year 11 leavers from last year. Have a look at the fantastic destinations the students ended up in – from College of FE to 6th Form to apprenticeships, they all achieved so much. In fact St Sampson’s High School students achieved the most apprenticeships on island last academic year. We wish current Year 11 as much success and look forward to hearing what they are doing in September.

PTA News

We held two events during the Spring term, both of which were a great success. The first was the annual ‘Search for a Star’ competition. Twelve acts presented a wonderful show including street dance through to classical ballet, musical acts covering various idioms such as bands, solo vocalists and instrumentalists, and a magician.

We were pleased to welcome compère for the evening Mr Josh Gabriel, and three judges for the competition: Mrs Michelle Nash, Rev. Matthew Barrett, and Mr Jason Alderton. The audience was entertained with music kindly presented by the samba band, Guernsey Burros, whilst the judges considered their verdict.

The winner of the Key Stage 3 competition was Declan Simon who had astounded the audience with his magic tricks. The winner of the Key Stage 4 competition was a rock band called the Doomsday Project made up of four year 11 St. Sampson’s High students, Alex Ogier, George Russell, Adam Walford and Jake Pemberton. They performed an original song of their own composition which had a McFly vibe.

The overall winner of the competition was a group called the Bel Air Kids made up of four students from Le Murier – Jordan-Lee Gallienne, Samuel Teixiera, Jacques Gallagher and Kieran Prigent - performing with vocals, ukuleles, bass guitar and drums. They performed the theme tune from ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ and had the audience clapping along with them.

The technical side of the evening was run by St Sampson’s High Senior Technician James Le Huray with a willing group of students who kept the sound and light show underway as well as making sure all the performers had the equipment they required.

Many thanks to all involved in a great evening, at which the motivation and talent amongst the students of the two schools were clearly demonstrated.

The second event was a quiz with a ploughman’s supper. Caroline Bowker and Sean McManus were the question masters for the evening, and the PTA put together the supper. It was a very entertaining evening with questions included for all ages. As well as parents, students, teachers and friends enjoying a sociable evening, funds were raised which go to supporting the students at both Baubigny Schools. Many thanks to the quiz masters and Guernsey Dairy for their help with the event.

PTA Future Events:

Baubigny Schools PTA are holding a Summer Fayre on Sunday 22nd June from 2 to 4pm. Please come along and enjoy the afternoon. We would welcome donations of books, CD’s and DVD’s dropped in to the school office before the event, and cakes on the day from 10am. If you can help in any way please e-mail [email protected].

The PTA are planning to provide ‘goody bags’ made up from donations from various businesses in the Island for the students to enjoy during the West Coast Challenge on Friday 4th July.

There will be a school disco for incoming year 6 students with Years 7 and 8 on Tuesday 8th July.

Gifted & Talented News from Mrs Appelqvist

The English G&T club, The Dead Poets Society have formed a Carnegie Award shadowing group. We are reading the Carnegie shortlisted novels, sharing our reactions to the novels and preparing to attend a session with all Island secondary schools at the library. We have also launched our own shadowing page, and will be creating reviews, short films and adverts for the shortlisted books.

The English department were also fortunate enough to have a poetry group visit us for a poetry Slam Jam event during the Literary Festival. This session took place for a number of year 9 students on Wednesday 14th May.

On Sunday 18th May the Guernsey Literary Festival came to a close, with a student led poetry slam at St. James. I was really proud to have a student represent our school at this event, as we were the only high school to participate.

Hayley Corbet in year 9 read a wonderful and very moving poem titled, ‘If I weren’t afraid’. Not only did Hayley represent us wonderfully, but she won! She beat representatives from both the Grammar school and Elizabeth College, and the professional poets and judges couldn’t praise her enough! Hayley was interviewed and appeared on tv on Monday 19th May, talking about her poem and the slam jam.

Two year 8 students, Melissa Wilson and Sasha Belford, also participated in the Literary Festival, they attended a writing workshop on Saturday with published and award winning novelist Bali Rai. They did the school proud and represented us wonderfully. They wrote some wonderful stories, which the author Andrew Clover openly praised.

Well done to all.

Upcoming Summer Term Performances:

Friday 27th June - Year 7 Sweeney Todd It's that time of year again! Each year 7 class will be putting on a performance of Sweeney Todd - the demon barber of Fleet Street. This will be a culmination of work from their Drama, Music and Art lessons this term. Times of the performances will be sent out after half term (please also check for details on the school's Facebook page). All the performances will take place during the day and parents, carers and family are welcome to attend.

Tuesday 1st July - M.A.D night (Music/Art/Drama) this will be our final performance and exhibition of the year. Tickets will be available from the school office shortly.

The first half will feature performances by the Orchestra, The Doomsday Project, Brass Ensemble, Choir, Double Reed ensemble and Recorder Ensemble. The second half will be a short production by the Drama Club and Choir of 'Mr Punch'.

Finally, a big thank you to all the year 11 students who have taken such an active part in the Creative Arts during their time in school. This year group in particular have been reliable, dedicated to rehearsals and have given some superb performances. Many of them of course will be involved in MAD night and I am sure we will continue to hear about their successes during the next few years.

Art Department

The award winning poems and three works of art by local artists’ Charlie Buchanan, Darren Cranmer and Hugh Rose, share the Gate House Gallery with work by Year 10 Students from across Guernsey. Two of our Year 10 students, Imogen Conlan and Michael Sarahs, were involved in the Poetry on the move illustration. Well done to both Imogen and Michael.

The Winners’ reading 2014 with Candy Neubert, Guernsey’s International Poetry Competition was held where winning posts read their work. The poems were selected in two phases; 33 entries were chosen for the new

Poems-on the-buses exhibition and 12 of these also take part in the larger Poems on the Move display, beginning at and inspiring local artists and students.

Humanitites Dept News

On Thursday 15th March, Holocaust survivor Rudi Oppenheimer came to St Sampson’s High to deliver 2 presentations to all of year 8 and some members of year 9 and 10. He talked about his experience of life under the Nazis and his time at Bergen Belsen and Westerborg Concentration Camp. Whilst his mother and father both died at Bergen Belsen, Rudi and his brother and sister were among the lucky few who survived. The talk was a unique opportunity to hear about an important part of our history.

For further information on Rudi, visit http://www.het.org.uk/index.php/survivors-ro

Rudi’s brother Paul wrote a book about his experiences; ‘From Belsen to Buckingham Palace’. Those students who would like to purchase a signed book can ask Miss Tostevin to order a copy. Books cost £5.
