    COACHING STAFF ADAM WRIGHT HEAD COACH • 1st Year Alma Mater: UCLA ’01 Adam Wright begins his first season as UCLA’s head men’s water polo coach in 2009. A former standout in the pool at UCLA and on the U.S. Olympic Team, Wright was named the fourth head coach in program history on June 3, 2009. A four-year letterwinner at UCLA (1997-2000), Wright led the Bruins to back-to- back NCAA titles in 1999 and 2000. Following his collegiate career, Wright served as a key member on the U.S. National Team, participating in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics for Team USA. He helped lead the U.S. to a seventh-place finish at the 2004 Olympics (Athens) and to the silver medal at the 2008 Olympics (Beijing). Wright served as an assistant coach with the UCLA men’s and women’s water polo teams during the 2008-09 school year. He helped guide the women’s program to an unprecedented fifth consecutive NCAA championship in May 2009. Following the 2008 men’s water polo season, Wright played an integral role in securing the top men’s recruiting class in the nation. In addition, Wright served as an assistant coach with the varsity boys and girls water polo programs at Wilson High School (Long Beach, Calif.) from 2001-04.     Tempe Oral History Project Narrator: FRANK KUSH Interviewer: MARK PRY Date of Interview: July 11, 1995 Interview Number: OH - 153 Frank Kush was born in Pennsylvania. He was an All-American football player at Michigan State. In 1955, he came to Arizona State College to be an assistant football coach under head coach Dan Devine. In 1958 he became the head football coach. He quickly developed a winning football team, and built Arizona State's reputation as a major national contender in collegiate football. He was involved in the creation of the Western Athletic Conference in 1962, and was primarily responsible for bringing ASU into the PAC-10 Conference in 1978. He was fired in 1979 due to controversies over student athletes' receiving unearned class credits, and an incident in which he allegedly hit the helmet of an ASU team member. In this interview he talks about the ASU-UA rivalry, the Sun Angels Foundation, gaining national recognition for the ASU football team and individual athletes, ASU's entry into PAC-10 Conference, his personal coaching philosophy and reputation as a disciplinarian, events surrounding his dismissal as head coach in 1979, and his career since leaving ASU. One more baseball team (Canyon Springs) can punch their ticket to a final four on Monday afternoon. Softball finals will be Friday & Saturday at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine while all baseball finals will be played on Saturday split between Dodger Stadium & UC Riverside. Congratulations to Great Oak & Norco who are the only schools in our area to have baseball and softball teams playing on Tuesday. Let's take a look at the matchups. Softball: Division 1>> #1 Norco @ Huntington Beach Tuesday 315pm: CIF-SS Division 1 is regarded by many experts as one of the toughest playoff brackets to win nationwide. Last year the Huntington Beach softball team was given very little chance to compete with Norco in their quarterfinal matchup. They not only did that but pushed the Cougars to extra innings before falling on a Kinzie Hansen walk off double 6-5. Flash forward one year & it's the Cougars and Oilers matched up again, this time one round later and in Orange County. Huntington Beach coach Jeff Forsberg had to mix and match lineups as his team was hit by injuries throughout the year but still managed to fight their way to this point. Jadelyn Allchin leads their offense with a .453 average and 11 extra base hits. Grace Uribe sports an impressive 2.16 ERA and opponents batting average of .214 in 97 innings of work. They've recorded wins against King (3/16 Best of the West) & Grand Terrace (5/2 Rd 1 of playoffs) from our area and lost to CBL runner up Yucaipa (8-4 in Michelle Carew Tournament).

A total of 231 teams qualifi ed for the seven divisional single-elimina on tourna- ments. Compe on opens tomorrow (Divisions 2, 4, 6) and Wednesday (Divisions 1, 3, 5, 7) with wild-card round games where necessary, followed by fi rst-round games on Thursday, June 3 in Divi- sion’s 2, 4, 6 and Division’s 1, 3, 5, 7 on Friday, June 4. The championship fi nals are slated for Friday, June 18 at Blair Field in Long Beach and Saturday, May 19 on Goodwin Field at CS Fullerton. Divisons at those sites are s ll TBA. All games with the excep on of championship games are scheduled to be- gin at 3:15 p.m. unless otherwise noted. All championship games from Goodwin Field will be streamed live by Bally Sports West.
