If you play the vibes, you have to square with the fact that two names will always exist behind your playing. Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson. You cannot escape this duo. If you yourself were not influenced by them, others will compare you to them. Can you make fluid runs like Hamp did? Can you play the blues like Bags? Do you have the kind of understatement and finesse that the Modern Jazz Quartet was famous for? On Memorial Day weekend, several hundred Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz got to experience Steve Nelson address these questions, even as he asserted his unique voice on this most storied and hip instrument. In the past, I have experienced some vibes players grandstanding – flailing around the instrument, making goofy faces at the audience, exploiting the novelty of the timbre to highlight flash over substance. None of that occurred here. After a rousing set by the Red Land High School Jazz band (man, those young men and women can play!), Steve and his quartet quietly took the stand, picked up or sat down at their instruments, and blew the roof off the Rose Lerhman Center. As a player, Steve Nelson makes no goofy faces. There are no unnecessary movements or flailing of limbs. He doesn’t switch mallets very often, and rarely departs from a two-mallet approach. In short, he is not interesting to watch. Instead, he IS interesting to hear, and there was plenty of that to go around. If I were given only one word to describe Mr Nelson’s voice, it would be “dynamics.” I found myself thinking more of Bill Evans than other vibes players, as Nelson displayed the uncanny ability to get inside the songs, using a wide palette of textures and volume to portray meaning. In short, he made the vibes sing, keeping the audience hanging on every note and the deep amount of experience and living behind his music. Did he play standards? Yep. Did he do the obligatory “Bags Groove” quote? Yep. These were not the highlights, though. The highlights lay in the deep communication between Steve and the ensemble, the easy virtuosity of his playing, and the deep meaning in his dynamics and musical statements. This was not an afternoon of histrionics. Instead, we were treated to a feast of blisteringly good jazz.

The evenings “Legends” include vocalist /pianist Freddy Cole and his quartet. Freddy is the brother of Nat “King” Cole and has been thrilling audiences with his interpretations of the American Songbook through more than 20 recordings and thousands of performances. Let us know of other sites that are hosting jazz and we will include them in our next issue of The ViBE!! . Every 2nd Wednesday at Gullifty’s , 6:30-9:30 p.m. 1104 Carlisle Road, Camp Hill, PA Every 4th Monday at River City Blues Club 7-10 p.m. 819 South Cameron St., Harrisburg . These sessions encourage musicians young and old to improve their improvisational abilities, play with a professional rhythm section, and develop a network of musical friends. All aspiring jazz instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome to sit in - food and drink are available 7 9 in both venues during the performances. Under 21 must be accompanied by an adult. JOIN THE CENTRAL PA YOUTH JAZZ BAND Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band . There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!!
