Living on the farm, Ken said their son, Greg, had little else to do besides being a farmer. Once Greg turned 9 in 1969, he joined the local 4-H program, and Ken and Sandy helped out when possible. Greg got a heifer that he went on to show at the fair. After that, Sandy said all her children showed dairy cattle. Sandy said they wanted to get more involved in the program. Whenever they could, the two of them helped out in all sorts of 4- H activities. “We wanted to help kids. We were involved in the 4-H camp, winter fun day, clean-up day. We had a lot of activities in 4-H that we always were involved in,” Sandy said. During the 1970s, Sandy was a senior judge and judged cattle. She was also on the showing and fitting team. “We got the calf clipped, washed and trained to go in the show ring,” she said. Ken recalled participating in Dairy Days at the supermarket. He said people could learn what 4-H is all about and get up close to the animals. “We used to take the kids with their animals to the (grocery( store so people could pet the ani- mals and we showed them how to take care of them,” he said.
