Govt aims to ease debt costs Greece sees high demand for 30-yr bond ATHENS, Greece, March 18, (AP): Greece has raised 2.5 billion euros ($3 billion) in a 30-year government bond sale that saw high demand and is aimed at improving the country’s debt profile dur- ing the pandemic. The yield was just below 2% and the auction was more than 10 times oversubscribed, the country’s Public Debt Management Agency said. A steep recession in 2020 and high pandemic relief costs pushed Greece’s debt-to-gross domestic product ratio to over an estimated 200% last year. The government is hoping to take advantage of current low interest rates to improve Greece’s debt sustainability and offset some of the impact of the pandemic on the public finances. It was Greece’s first 30-year bond issue since 2007. Finance Minister Christos Staikouras said Wednesday’s bond auction, the second held so far in 2021, signaled an end to the country’s reliance on funds from successive international bailouts between 2010 and 2018. “This issue marks a full return of our country to international markets,” he said. “It provides securi- ty to investors as it far exceeds the debt-settlement period agreed with (bailout) institutions.” In late January, Greece raised 3.5 billion euros ($4.2 billion) with a 10-year bond issue whose yield was close to 0.8%. Athens is also planning to repay part of its bailout debt to the International Monetary Fund ahead of schedule to reduce annual debt servicing costs. The early repayment worth some 3.3 billion euros ($3.9 billion) would cover nearly two-thirds of the outstanding debt to the IMF, and follow a similar repayment worth 2.7 billion euros ($3.2 billion) in late 2019. Greece sunk back into recession last year due to the pandemic and lockdown measures, with the economy shrinking an estimated 8.2%, while hopes for a strong recovery this year have been dampened by extended restrictions. Cookie-shaped planet shard Mars rover ‘relays’ sounds of driving CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., March 18, (AP): NASA’s newest Mars rover has sent back the first-ever sounds of driving on the red planet - a grinding, clanking, banging affair that by Earth standards would be pretty worrisome. The noises made by Perseverance’s six metal wheels and suspension on the first test drive two weeks ago are part of a 16-minute raw audio feed released Wednesday by Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. “If I heard these sounds driving my car, I’d pull over and call for a tow,” Dave Gruel, an engineer on the rover team, said in a written NASA statement. “But if you take a minute to consider what you’re hearing and where it was recorded, it makes perfect sense.” Perseverance - the biggest, most advanced rover ever sent to Mars - landed near an ancient river delta on Feb. 18 to search for signs of past life. Samples will be taken from the most promising rocks for eventual return to Earth. The rover carries two microphones. One already has captured the sounds of wind and rock-zapping lasers, the other was meant to record the descent and landing. This second mike didn’t pick up any sounds of the rover’s arrival at Mars, but managed to record the first test drive March 4. ‘Raw and vulnerable’ For Bravo, ‘Cherry’ a star-making role

iara Bravo didn’t have high hopes for her pros- Cpects when she saw the names attached to “Cher- ry.” She’d been working in the business for over a decade, but it was mostly in television and bit film roles. No way, she thought, was she going to be cast to star opposite “Spider-Man” himself, Tom Holland, in a major film based on a bestselling memoir about PTSD and opioid addition from Marvel maestros Joe and Anthony Russo. “It was SO out of my league,” Bravo said in a re- cent interview. She sent in a tape anyway and for four weeks she didn’t hear a word. When her agent texted saying he had news, her fi rst thought was that he was going to drop her. Not because of him, she said, “He’s wonderful.” It was just her anxiety. Then he dropped the bomb- shell: She got the role. No sec- ond audition. No meeting. No chemistry test. The tape was that good. “When Ciara’s audition Bravo came to us at AGBO, we said, ‘Stop the presses,’” said Mike Larocca, a producer and the co-founder of the company. The Russos even claim they knew after 20 seconds. It’s not unlike the revelation many have had or will Aaron Tveit, (right), appears with Karen Olivo during a performance of ‘Moulin Rouge!
