North Dakota is in a unique situation in this decade. For the first time. North Dakota's agriculture-based economy is faced with the outside entrepreneur, eager to utilize our natural resources. Our water and coal — our energy resources — are becoming increasingly important to people outside our State. The significant challenge of this decade will be to determine the proper balance between conservation of our natural resources, and the necessary usage of them to contribute our share to the nation's energy needs. Among the people faced with that challenge are the many elected leaders and governmental officials noted in this volume. Their ability to deal with this and other problems will determine North Dakota's course for centuries.
