International Student Support • The Avalon School offers international students English language support courses five days per week for 50 minutes each day. The instructor for the course, Ed O’Daniel, has been teaching for over 15 years and has a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts. For subject-specific help, teachers at The Avalon School are always willing to spend extra time helping students. House System • The system of houses at The Avalon School is designed to help foster among its students with chivalrous and noble spirit. The Houses themselves are name in honor of men or families who helped build the state of (Stewart, Calvert, Carroll and Washington), with each house bearing a coat of arms.

Gaithersburg is a suburb and a primary city within the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The eastern part of Gaithersburg, which is where the school is located, is the historic center of the city known as “Olde Town,” consisting of shops in refurbished buildings built when the town was a hub for the railroad in the 1800s. The west side of the city embraces New Urbanism, a design movement that promotes walkable neighborhoods. The city is best known for scientific research and biotechnology, with The National Institute of Standards and Technology, MedImmune, IBM, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and the French multinational corporation, Sodexo headquartered in Gaithersburg. The Avalon School is only a 30-minute drive from Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. A bus stop directly in front of the school brings students to the red line Metro stop, which will bring students into the center of Washington, D.C. Academic Programs

Baseball Modern Facility The Avalon School is located on 7 ½ acres of land in the suburbs of Washington, DC, close to a metro stop. The campus boasts 15,000 square feet of space, 15 classrooms, 7 offices, a computer lab, and a cafeteria. The football team plays games at Martin Luther King Field; the soccer team plays games at the SoccerPlex in Germantown; the basketball team plays games at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg; and the baseball team plays games at Kelley Park in Gaithersburg.

Founder The Avalon School in 2003 after more than two decades of experience in independent school education. Richard is a seasoned teacher of mathematics, from long division through the advanced levels of calculus. A graduate of Harvard College (1979), Richard was the recipient of a National Endowment of the Humanities fellowship at Harvard in 1988, where he studied Aristotle’s natural philosophy. He is married and the father of six children.

Cambridge Success Stories • Suker Li of the Class of 2014 was named an AP Scholar with Honor. He attends the Catholic University of America. He played American football at Avalon. • Wei Wei Li of the Class of 2015 passed 6 AP exams and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction, he played soccer at Avalon and attends the University of Maryland in College Park. • Runlin Fu of the class of 2015 was named an AP Scholar, he attends George Washington University in Washington, DC • Jason Wang of the class of 2016 was named an AP Scholar with Honor; he attends the University of Maryland.

Awards and Honors Students consistently win awards for the highest possible achievement in the National Latin Exam. In 2016, 41 juniors and seniors took 68 Advanced Placement exams in eight subjects: English Literature, English Language, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, European History, US History, Chemistry and Biology. Two seniors were named AP Scholars with honor (pass 4 or more AP exams) and three seniors were named as AP Scholars (pass 3 or more AP exams). From the Class of 2016, 14 students will go on to play college sports. Seven students will play college football. Of note, will play at Alabama. Five students will play college baseball. Of note, Eric Janss will play at LaSalle. One student will play college basketball and one will play college soccer.
