6. Process of deposition of sediments in the rivers of the district In geology, physical geography, and sediment transport, fluvial processes relate to flowing water in natural systems. This encompasses rivers, streams, flash floods and outburst floods. Sediment moved by water can be larger than sediment moved by air because water has both a higher density and viscosity. In typical rivers the largest sediment is carried out of and sand gravel size, but flooded water can carry cobbles, pebbles & gravel and even boulders. The deposition is the processes where material being transported by a river is laid down in favorable spreaded area. Deposition spreads when a river loses velocity and river drops its load. This can also be when a river enters a shallow area (this could be when it floods and comes into contact with the flood plain) or towards its mouth where it meets another body of water. When rivers flood, the velocity of water slows down. As the result of this the river's capacity to transport material is reduced and deposition occurs. This deposition leaves a layer of sediment across the whole floodplain. After a season, of floods layers of sediment form along the flood plain. Larger material and the majority of deposition covers the area next to the river channel. This is the result of increased friction (with the flood plain) causing the velocity of the river to attain slow-pace and induces rapid reduction of its ability to transport material along the change of flow. This leaves a ridge of higher material next to the river channel on both banks of the river known as a „levee‟. In the area by the process of collision, erosion and weathering of encountered rock types through river channel initiating from the origin of the river, which ensues further attrition of wearing and tearing of sediments flowing along the streamline. As stream course attains plain plateau area, the sediment load bearing water flowing speed deemed to be reduced, which gives rise the low transporting capacity of stream water with sediments load as cobbles boulders pebbles and sand. This phenomenon is liable to pose the deposition of sand and material at low gradient. The sand is also deposited where the river coarse acquires the meandering shape, the water flowing velocity decreases causing the sand deposition on the bank sides and within coarse spreads. With the gradual rear and tear process of eroding material, the converting the attired sand keep on collecting at the bank column of the river channels throughout its river course. The area is drained by a network of streams, which discharge their water along with flowing sediments through the confluence with Som & channels, which are the two majestic rivers. These two Rivers are flowing through Dungarpur District, which are considered as two most sacred rivers in that region. One tributary known as Moran river is initiating from Kajaria village tehsil Jonthri where the gradient is 280 MSL, extending via village Khadgda to Solej tehsil Sagwara flowing for about 47.2 km, which confluences with Mahi river. While, the sight at the confluence of the two Dungarpur Rivers, that is, Som and Mahi rivers, the much popular Baneshwar Temple is situated, which is blessed with three of the Shivlingas. Mahi river, which is one of the famous rivers in Dungarpur, has its origin at the Amoru village near the place called Mhow in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The river basin created by the Mahi river is placed in the southern parts of Rajasthan. The various regions are covering over within the Mahi river coarse including the districts of , Banswara, Udaipur and Dungarpur. The three major dam projects, which are located at the Mahi River Basin include the following- Mahi Bajaj Sagar, Jakham, Jaisamand. Som river rises near Som village on the Eastern slopes of the Aravalli hills in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan. At an elevation of 600 m above m.s.l. and owes to flow in the Eastern direction to join the main river Mahi on the right bank 6.3 km located at upstream of Paderdibadi site in Dungarpur district of Rajasthan. Its total length is about 155 km. Gomti & Jakham are the major right bank, sub tributaries of Som. The Som river runs in Dungarpur district from west of Aspur, Som-Kamla-Amba Dam.

7. General profile of the district The district Dungarpur is named after “the town of hillocks” and the capital of the former princely state of Dungarpur. It is located in the southern part of Rajasthan. The town of Dungarpur itself is said to have been a Bhil Pal or a hamlet of Dungaria, a Bhil Chieftain whom Rawal Veer Singh Dev caused to be assassinated in the fourteenth century. Whatever may be the legend about the beginning of the settlements in the district, there is no doubt that it formed the part of the territory known in history as Bagar or with Vatpadrak, present Baroda (a village in Aspur tehsil) as its old capital. Dungarpur district is divided into 5 sub-divisions, which are further divided into 9 tehsils. 5 Sub-division consists Dungarpur,Bichhiwara, Simalwara, Aspur and Sagwara; while 9 tehsils consist of Dungarpur, Bichhiwara , Simalwara, Chikhli, Jhaunthri, Sagwara, Aspur and Sabla. The district consists 4 Vidhan Sabha constituencies, Dungarpur, Chorasi, Sagwara and Aspur. TheVidhan Sabha constituencies from Dungarpur district are the part of the Lok Sabha constituency of the Banswara-Dungarpur. In 2011, Dungarpur had population of 1,388,552 of which male and female were 696,532 and 692,020 respectively, this gave it a ranking of 351st in India (out of a total of 640). The district had a population density of 368 inhabitants per square kilometer (950/sq mi) .Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 25.39%. Dungarpur had a sex ratio of 990 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 60.78%. In 2001 census, Dungarpur had a population of 1,107,643 of which males were 547,791 and remaining 559,852 were females. There was change of 25.36 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Dungarpur District recorded increase of 22.46 percent to its population compared to 1991.

8. Land utilization pattern in the district Forest, agriculture, horticulture, Mining act, etc. The total geographic area, forests comprise of about 16 per cent. These data refer to area under the forest department rather than on the standing forest- in fact, field observations suggested that the forest here is really thorny shrub and undergrowth in most areas (particularly the north), though there are some lush patches in the centre-south. Land under trees, shrubs, undergrowth or that used for grazing was only about 0.5 per cent (tiny it may be, yet it has been reducing over time). Uncultivable waste is large (about 26 per cent)- as stated earlier, large terrain here is hilly and undulating. There has been a miniscule reduction in this area over these ten years under consideration: it is possible that there has been some small effort from time to time, to reclaim part of this waste land. The cultivable wasteland is a small area, at six per cent of the total geographic area. Over the years 1996-97 to 2005-06, there has been virtually no recovery of cultivable wasteland.

9. Physiography of the district. A major part of the district is characterized by a rugged terrain. The north East-South west trending aravalli hill ranges are dominant in the western part. The ground elevation of the area is about 320 mts while the hills rise upto 552 mts above MSL. The area is drained by a network of streams that discharge their water into the Som &Mahi , the two major rivers of the district. The Udaipur-Ahmedabad meter gauge railway line of western railway passes through the district with Dungarpur and Rikhabdev road as main stations. The Delhi-Ahmedabad NH-8 also passes through western part of the district. It is connected from Ahmadabad by tar road of 173 km. However, Indore is 317 km away, is 522 km far, Delhi is 768 km distance and Pune is 797 km distant from Dungarpur. It is also connected by 65km long state tar road to Banswara.

10. Rainfall month wise The average rainfall of District is 710mm and occur great variations from year to year and drought situation is normal condition in the district.. But the rainfall is quite variable from year to year, as Nithawa had 805 mm in 2013 but only 465 mm in 2014.

11. Geology and mineral wealth. The geological antiquity of the district belongs to pre-Aravalli group of rocks represented by schists, gneisses and granites, Qiartzite and slates. These outcrops lying largely in the west. Gneisses rocks occur in between Hathai and Mandev and along the Mahi river for 10 kms southward from padaradi to east of Nayagaon and are associate with diorites and traps. Slates are in abundance in the central region and are largely, interstraified with veins of Quartz (North of Dungarpur town) pegmatite and granite intrusions are also seen in the states. The chief rock types of the area phyllite and quartzite striking NNW and SSE intruded by ultrabasic intrusive. The phyllite, Quartzite, Schist and dolomite belongs to Aravalli supergroup which has been subdived into the lower Udaipur group and the upper group. The Quartz occupies the top position. The ultrabasic are represented by talc, tremolite actinolite schist, chlorite schist and serpentine rocks which are sources of famous green marble. The crystalline limestone/dolomite in the north-eastern part can be used as marble as well as cement manufacture.

Super Group Group Formation Aravalli Supergroup Lunavada Sand and younger alluvium, Phyllite, meta-silt stone, garnetiferous mica schist, quartzite & dolomite. MINERAL RESOURCE: Dungarpur has a rich assemblage of minerals. The important one are soapstone, fluorite, green marble, basemetal etc. BASE METALS: Occurrences of copper are found near padar-ki-pal, Amjera, Dewal, Methali. Odenetc. The state department of mines & Geology carried out detailed investigation at padar-ki-pal estimating about 1 million tonne reserves of copper. Small occurrences were seen at other places. FLUORITE: The largest fluorite deposits in the state are located in mando0ki-pal, areas in this district. Other important localities are kahila Remore, Mata Bhagat, Rahatwali Thurwali, Umeria, Singhwali and Nawagaon. State department carried out the prospecting in the serves in mando-ki-pal and 2.5 Lacks tones in kahila area. The deposit is being mined by Rajasthan State Mineral Development Corporation. Fluorite is used as flux in metallurgy of iron and aluminum. Acid grade fluorite is used manufacture of Hydro-Fluoric acid which is subsequently used in glass and chemical industries. SOAPSTONE: There are four important soapstone belts in the district. Soapstone occurs in pockets and lenses associated with ultra basic rocks and also associated with the dolomitic limestone. the important localities are Dewal, Jakol, Thana, Rohanwara, Pipoloda. Sabli MUnger, Padar, Amjera, Parsola, Bharkubdi Sarkan, Surata-ki-pal,Devpur-i-I,Devpur-II,Patanpura Solaj etc. It is used in cosmetics, refractories, paper & paint, pesticide and insecticide industries. ASBESTOS: Crysotile variety of Asbestos is found sporadically near Dewal, Jadol, Gokulpura etc. Villages associated with ultra basic rocks. Tremilite varriety is also form fairly workable deposits. MARBLE: Serpentine rocks are being miend as green marble near Dewal, Surata, Dachki, Hirata, Simalwara,PadlaJani,Jaspur Bhatoan Ka etc. Villages. The marble takes good polish and has good market. LIMESTONE: Crystalline pink-grey-white limestone belonging to Aravali Super Group Occurs in two belts in Dugarpur district near sabla, Mungar, Harwar etc. villages. Near sabla lime stone belt runs for a strike lenght about 17-18 Kms from Rama in north to bhatole in south. The width varies from 100 to 1000 mts. Limestone of this belt is crystaline, pink and off white in colour. preliminary investigations carried out by the department in part of area indicated about 15 million tonnes reserve containing 40 to 50% CaO, 2 to 4% MgO, and 8 to 18% SiO2 The limestone takes good polish and can be used as marble. Another limestone band of about 1 Km length and 50 to 100mts. width occurs near Harwar, Nithuwa villages. It is off white to grey in colour con training 48 to 50 CaO, 5 to 10% SiO2 and less then 2% MgO. It is also being used as marble. QUARTZ: Mineral Quartz has occurred on the surface like out crop as well as under surface. Quartz mineral occurred in Karada, Kariyana, Saroda, Padwa, Deevra Bada, Jethana Villages of Tehsil Sagwara, Punjpur, Bodigama Chhota, Bodigama Bada, Usmaniya Villages in Tehsil of Aspur. BUILDING STONE: There are large Occurrences of slates and phyllites which are being mined at places for use as building stone. Phyllites are excavated near Rampura, Denandi, Baramagra etc. The State department of mines % Geology has been carring out mineral survey programmes in the district regularly. Notable findings are deposits of base mental and fluorite besides small occurrences of kyanite, magnesite soapstone and etc. Te district is a major producer of soapstone and serpentine marble. The details of the productions and revenue are given in the table.

Annual sand deposition The district experiences arid to semi-arid type of climate. Mean annual rainfall of the district varies from 500-800 mm. Almost 80% of the total annual rainfall is received during the southwest monsoon, which enters the district in the first week of July and withdraws in the mid of September. Probability of annual rainfall exceeding 750 mm is only 10%. However, there is 90% probability that the annual rainfall will be more than 190 mm. Drought analysis based on agriculture criteria indicates that the district is prone to mild and normal type of droughts. Dungarpur district falls in the Mahi & Som Basins. Major River of the district is Mahi and Som, which flows in NE – SW direction. Mahi river follows the district boundary. Other streams in the district are Som and Jhakam, which are dendritic, all ephemeral. The process of sand/bajri deposition in river bed and nala is highly dependent on the intensity and duration of monsoonal rainfall received in catchment area of Mahi and Som river and its tributaries. As monsoonal rainfall is erratic and nonpredictable, it is difficult to estimate quantity of annual replenishment of the sand/bajri in river bed, in case less rain, subsequenty flown water would be lessen in the river and tributaries. The water in the river, which may generate less erosin & attribution of load. The transportation may also be in minimal & as a result, the deposition of sand/bajri too become less. In case of flood, sudden gush to water may cause the change of river course, hence piled the sand spreading elsewhere adjacent to concerned course, which isn‟t considered sand deposition. During last few years, the rainfall is good in South Rajasthan, as such it may be inferred that sand replenishment happening at unpredictably moderate rate about few cm to 1 meter with variable small thickness at variable sites. As most of the river channels are incurring their river course within hilly terrain, which cause unusual depositing stride in the area. That way, it does not decipher any specific criteria and parameter governing the depositing covered layer of sand and bajri in their river courses. The mineral potential figures of sand/bajri at different rivers/streams in Dungarpur district are based on estimation and data provided by concern offices, the figures may vary from area to area and year to year basis. In this district, due course of administration policy regulating ban of the mineral production in tribal area, this area has also been covering such prohibited mineral exploration phase of the sand/bajri. So, the last very long, no production, exploration data could be constituted for the background to determine the exact explored/reclaimed sand cover in the river/stream area of the Dungarpur as such exact figures of replenishment in short duration may not be exact, yet arbitrarily calculated within available intimation resources. In the area, the specific long term studies with consecutive durational span need to be carried out for reaching average figures of quantity of sand/bajri replenishment in the district. The data narrated in report regarding annual deposition of sand/bajri estimation is based on the provided data of irrigation, revenue offices and formulating the sheer prediction. Thus, the figures may vary from area to area and year and year basis, therefore, this document is not static one. But, has to be of a considerate reference, these figures may vary with respect to time and space. In this district, due course of administration policy regulating ban of the mineral production in tribal area, this area has also been covering such prohibited mineral exploration phase of the sand/bajri. So, last very long, no production, exploration data could be constituted for the background to determine the exact explored/reclaimed sand cover in the river/stream area of the Dungarpur district.

Mineral Potential: The efforts are on to identify & locate the new areas for sand/ bajri and associated aggregates within river-bed or close to river bank or the areas of the river course spread generated from the excessive rain drained region. These resources are dependent upon the amount of rain fall & the water load carried out by the river or stream. As per earliar government direction, it has been rendered the ban on any process of lease-sanction for any mineral exploitation on commerciacial purpose in the Udaipur tribal region. So,This one Dungarpur district is falling in Tribal considered zone of banned corridor of mineral leasing process. Furthermore; in view of latest mineral policy, the compliance of new instructions regarding preparation of promising Bajri plots within the Dungarpur district area, amicable to the Auction purpose, these probable Bajri areas have so far been primarily assessed in three rivers named Som,Mahi and Moran in the Dungapur district. In the Som river, the 15 plots have been assessed of about 1050 Hectares area, which are falling in Tehsils Aspur and Salumber , these are covering areas near villages- Amritya Aspur, Fatehpura, Karkoli, Jaitana-Gol, Rama-Nela guda, Moolguda, Dewla kala-Khurd Similarly, three plots have been demarcated in the Moran river of about area 44.60 hectares situating n/v Khadgda, Tamtia of Sagwara tehsil and one large plot of 73.32 hectares dimension on Dev-somnath river n/v Devsomnath ,tehsil Sagwara,District Dungarpur. The total recommended area of Bajri concession may be assessed about 12 million sq. meters(12 sq. km.) and possessing about 7.58805 million Tones Sand/Bajri stack detaining in these river courses. Attached the concerning maps of the areas covering all river channels and Details are as given in table.
