There are also two ‘rocks’ onstage; one being Council Rock, the other, Bagheera’s Perch. A DEER enters, gracefully. Music begins softly as the deer moves from plant to plant, dancing. The music changes ominously. Quickly, the WOLF PACK surrounds the DEER. The WOLVES circle in on the deer, blocking it from view. DEER exits by the time the pack opens up again. A rustling from the bushes. The pack turns as one.) RAKSHA. Who moves within our grounds who does not use the Stranger’s Hunting Call? BAGHEERA. (Entering SR, carrying a bundle) We be of one blood, ye and I. RAKSHA. Bagheera. BAGHEERA. I tell you now, return to your den. It is not safe out tonight. RAKSHA. What is it? BAGHEERA. Shere Khan is out hunting. RAKSHA. On our grounds? BAGHEERA. He will not obey the Law of the Jungle. He is lame and wishes for easier prey. SEYVA. Our buck will be no easier for a lame tiger to catch. BAGHEERA. It is not buck he hunts tonight ... but man. RAKSHA. Man? SEYVA. In the jungle? BAGHEERA. Travelers. And their kin (nodding toward the bundle.) SEYVA. Bagheera. BAGHEERA. (Looking only at RAKSHA) I ask only that you take the cub with you. Just until Shere Khan moves on. RAKSHA. And you believe he will be safe then? BAGHEERA. -

In 1914, Scouting founder Robert Baden-Powell started a Scouting program based on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book stories. Take the Cub Scouts on a safari and help them discover fun and adventure in the wilds of Scouting. Learn why Africa is special to our founder Lord Baden-Powell. Find out how the Jungle Book story connects to Scouting. Use it and its characters to highlight den meeting games, crafts, and costumes for the pack meeting. Learn about the things you need if you are going on a safari and how would you survive. What do Scouts in Africa do? What are their uniforms like? Take a den trip to a local zoo, animal rescue facility, or wildlife refuge. Jungle/safari makes a great theme for pack meetings, banquets or day camp. • Pack Meetings: The pack meeting brings all the dens in the pack together for the purposes of recognizing the achievements of the Cub Scouts, communicating information about upcoming events, and providing a program that enriches the Cub Scouting experience. It helps the Cub Scouts realize their den is part of a larger organization. A good pack meeting should be well planned and well organized. Packs meet several times during the year – there is no required number. • Banquets: Most packs celebrate Scouting Anniversary Week in February with a birthday party called the blue and gold banquet; some packs do end of the year banquets. -

Chapter V Tales for Children 140 Chapter V Tales for Children The short stories written in Vermont initiate a phase of Kipling's career in which he can be considered as having become a writer for children. In Something of Myself, he has more to say about the group of children's books than about any other. It is his main point that only in a limited sense ought they to be regarded as children's book at all as they have a lot to offer to the adult readers also. Most mature readers who like Kipling agreed with this opinion and the books are most keenly appreciated by those who read them first in childhood (or listened to them being read) and have then come back to them in later life. This is the road to finding those layers of significance which Kipling, in fact, claimed to have put into them. These stories are categorized under three groups. A) Animal Tales) School Tales 3) Historical Tales. The collections of stories studied under these categories are, I) Animal Tales-r/ze Jungle Books (1894), Just so Stones (1902) II) School Tales-Stalky&Co (1899). III) Historical Tales-PwcA: of the Pook's Hill (1906), Rewards and Fairies (1910) I. Animal Tales Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Books are a blessed province of fancy and imagination where the readers can flee and be at peace. Rudyard Kipling wrote the stories with extraordinary power of imagination and flashes of unforgettable description virtuosity. The Jungle Books consist of a strange world where animals talk. -

1 The Jungle Book Scene 1: Mowgli’s Found in the Jungle Basu: Many strange legends are told of these jungles of India. But none as strange as the story of a small boy named Mowgli. It all began when the silence of the jungle was broken by an unfamiliar sound. (O.S. Baby is crying) It was a sound like one never heard before in this part of the jungle. Bagheera: (enters on stage) It’s a man-cub! Basu: Had Bagheera known how deeply he would be involved with Mowgli, he might have obeyed his first impulse to walk away. But Bagheera knew this man-cub would need nourishment, and soon. It would take many days to travel to the nearest man-village, and without a mother's care, well, he would soon perish. Then it occurred to him. (Bagheera grabs the basket by his mouth and starts walking to the corner to the wolves’ family den. Bagheera places basket by cave and nudges basket, creating a cry from Mowgli. Bagheera hides on the side of the stage watching the interaction of Mother Raksha and 4 wolf cubs coming to see what the noise was) Basu: Bagheera knew a family of wolves that had been blessed with a litter of cubs, and he believed there'd be no problem with the mother, Raksha, accepting this man-cub into the family thanks to maternal instinct. But he wasn’t so sure about Rama, the father. [Rama comes from side stage, looks at the man-cub and smiling face of Raksha, looks at cute Mowgli again and smiles too.] Basu: Ten times the rains have come and gone. -

Jungle Dances and their variations Jungle Dances Introduction This booklet has been compiled in response to a number of suggestions that the variations in the Jungle Dances should be collected together in a convenient form. With these are reprinted the Founder's own descriptions from The Wolf Cub's Handbook, and a few explanatory notes which may be found helpful. It should be remembered that there is no intention to limit the number of the Dances to those already published in the Handbook. In proof of this, the original four have been increased to five by the addition of the Dance of Shere Khan's Death, now one of the most popular of the series. Nor is it intended for the Pack, and are to be welcomed so long as the Dances are not thereby made unduly elaborate and difficult to follow. Grateful acknowledgement is made to those whose variations have been used in the following pages. Teaching the Dances It is not desired to lay down any hard-and-fast methods of teaching the Dances. That would be absurd, for each Akela must discover by experience the most successful method for his or her Pack. In the Jungle Dances, which are really plays of the Jungle, the Founder combined profit with pleasure. He has provided a means of expression for the boy's imaginative instinct and love of acting, and at the same time he has set forth certain very valuable lessons -- the moral lessons of the bullying Tiger and the sneaking Jackal, the disciplinary lessons of obedience (Kaa Dance) and Akela, bearing in mind all that can be learnt from these Jungle Dances, should give them thought and careful attention so that the Cubs will really enter into them.
