The music changes ominously. Quickly, the WOLF PACK surrounds the DEER. The WOLVES circle in on the deer, blocking it from view. DEER exits by the time the pack opens up again. A rustling from the bushes. The pack turns as one.) RAKSHA. Who moves within our grounds who does not use the Stranger’s Hunting Call? BAGHEERA. (Entering SR, carrying a bundle) We be of one blood, ye and I. RAKSHA. Bagheera. BAGHEERA. I tell you now, return to your den. It is not safe out tonight. RAKSHA. What is it? BAGHEERA. Shere Khan is out hunting. RAKSHA. On our grounds? BAGHEERA. He will not obey the Law of the Jungle. He is lame and wishes for easier prey. SEYVA. Our buck will be no easier for a lame tiger to catch. BAGHEERA. It is not buck he hunts tonight ... but man. RAKSHA. Man? SEYVA. In the jungle? BAGHEERA. Travelers. And their kin (nodding toward the bundle.) SEYVA. Bagheera. BAGHEERA. (Looking only at RAKSHA) I ask only that you take the cub with you. Just until Shere Khan moves on. RAKSHA. And you believe he will be safe then? BAGHEERA. -

A tribe of monkeys come chasing in with the boy Mowgli in their midst. They run in and out of the hut Mowgli has built. In the middle of their play, Kaa, the great python, comes through the jungle terrifying them and Baloo (a great bear) and Bagheera (a panther) who are Mowgli’s friends and protectors. The monkeys disperse and Baloo and Bagheera, finding Mowgli safe from Kaa, scold the boy for playing with the monkeys. They teach him how to make himself safe in the jungle while exacting a promise from him that he won’t go off with the monkeys again. They fall asleep. The monkeys, eager to get Mowgli to make them huts like his to keep them protected from the elements, wake him and drag him off with them through the jungle. Baloo and Bagheera go to the great Kaa to ask for help in rescuing Mowgli from the monkeys. As Kaa despises the monkeys for their dirty habits and also finds them delicious to eat he agrees to go with them. The monkeys have taken Mowgli to the Lost City. As he tries to teach them to make a hut Mowgli discovers how undisciplined, selfish and thoughtless the monkeys are and longs to be back with Bagheera and Baloo. -

1 1895 THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK Rudyard Kipling Kipling, Rudyard (1865-1936) - An English novelist, short-story writer, and poet who spent most of his youth in India, and is best known for his children’s classics. In 1907, Kipling was the first English writer ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. Journal of Literature and Art Studies, January 2018, Vol. 8, No. 1, 1-31 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2018.01.001 D DAVID PUBLISHING Empathy in Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Books, Mirrored in Illustrations by John Lockwood Kipling and Aldren Watson Norman Arthur Fischer Kent State University (Retired), Kent, Ohio, USA Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Books depict empathy in the animal and animal-human world, and the illustrations of Rudyard’s father, John Lockwood Kipling, and the American artist and prolific illustrator, Aldren Watson, help depict that empathy. Lockwood Kipling was both influence on and interpreter of the Jungle Books, as shown above all in the development from his Beast and Man in India of 1891 through his illustrations for the 1894 Jungle Book, and 1895 Second Jungle Book, to his illustrations that appear in the rearranged stories of The Jungle Book, and Second Jungle Book in the 1897 Scribners Outward Bound (O/B) editions. A variation on Lockwood’s O/B mode of Jungle Books illustrations is found in Watson’s illustrations for the 1948 Doubleday edition, Jungle Books, which is the title I will use throughout.1 Part One details the influence of two animal empathy writers, Lockwood Kipling and Ernest Thompson Seton, on the Jungle Books. Part Two uses recent philosophical studies of empathy in the animal and human relationship. Part Three applies a German philosophy of art history to the new look of the O/B and Doubleday Jungle Books. Part Four interprets selected Jungle Books stories in the light of Parts one, two and three. -

The Jungle Book The Jungle Book The story A wolf family finds a young boy wandering in the jungle and adopts him, giving him the name Mowgli. He becomes part of the wolf pack, and Baloo, the old bear and Bagheera, the panther, teach him the Law of the Jungle. However, Shere Khan, the tiger, doesn’t like having a child who will become a man living in the jungle, and wants to kill him. One day Mowgli is taken prisoner by the monkeys who live in an abandoned city in the jungle. Baloo and Bagheera get help from Kaa, the python, and rescue him. As Mowgli gets older he is in great danger from Shere Khan. The one thing that all animals are afraid of is fire, so he goes to a nearby village and steals a pot with fire in it. He uses the fire to fight Shere Khan, but he knows that he will have to kill Shere Khan to be safe. As Mowgli gets older, the animals begin to realize that he can’t live with them in the jungle when he is a grown man. He returns to the village where he is adopted by a family. But Shere Khan finds him. This time Mowgli kills Shere Khan. Film a Re-Reading of the Jungle Book
www.ijcrt.org © 2018 IJCRT | Volume 6, Issue 4 December 2018 | ISSN: 2320-2882 Adapting to Jungle: Film a Re-reading of The Jungle Book Aishwarya K R Student Kerala University Abstract: This paper addresses the postcolonial re-reading of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book and its film adaptations, The Jungle Book (2016) and Mowgli: The Legend of the Jungle (2018). Kipling’s The Jungle Book is an authoritative voice in imprinting imperial ideology of the West. The way the law of the jungle operates in the story has been re-read as a metaphorical functioning of the British imperial officialdom in the sub-continent. Theorizing power and employing it in the narrative of the colonial discourses have been foundational to the territorial as well as textual triumph of the Raj. This paper employs post-colonialism and film adaptation theory for its analytical framework. Index Terms - Post colonialism, anti-native, anti-nature. The fiction and theories of post colonialism raise the significant question ‘can we ever become post- colonial?’ The comparative analysis of the book The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and its two film adaptations The Jungle Book released in the year 2016 and Mowgli: The Legend of Jungle (2018) based on post-colonial film theory. In addition, these three primary texts have been comprehended based on the contemporary culture of the British Empire and the way these have been characterised in the film adaptations. The depiction of anti-native and anti-nature within the texts have been comprehended and highlighted explicitly by notions of post colonialism and its reflection in the film adaptations.
