This night showcases the achievement of people undertaking Vocational Education and Training throughout the Riverina Murray districts. Lachlan had been nominated by Yanco Agricultural High School in the VET in Schools Student of the Year Category, as he exemplifies everything that is expected by a student undertaking VET subjects. Lachlan had to attend a local interview where he was asked to demonstrate his knowledge of the VET world and discuss how it differed from traditional education pathways. At the awards presentation, Lachlan was awarded the top gong – which was presented by Deputy Prime Minister The Hon Michael McCormack MP. Lachlan will now represent the Riverina Region at the State Finals later in the year. Lachlan is currently in Year 12 studying for his HSC, and is completing three VET subjects as part of his pathway into the world of work. He has a real affinity for competency based learning and ensures that he strives for excellence and industry standard in all that he does. Lachlan chose this pathway as these three courses relate to his future career aspirations of being a farm manager, contract business owner and then ultimately a farm owner. The qualifications that he departs school with shall enable him to get a foothold in the agricultural sector and possess the fundamental skills that are required to succeed. Lachlan enjoys working on the family farm and practices skills learnt at every opportunity. He has relished mandatory work placements, and used it as a platform to further engage with industry and learn skills in the areas of water use efficiency, plant variety genetics, tillage methods, and livestock handling. Lachlan attributes his intrigue and continued passion for the agricultural sector to his to enjoyment and involvement in the VET frameworks at a specialist agricultural High School. He takes on board all feedback and applies this to new situations, often demonstrating to peers his high level of skill, which ultimately enhances their learning and demonstrates his ability to work well in a team environment. Luke Collins / Head Teacher TAS PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Another term has come to an end amongst a flurry of learning, extracurricular activities, broken water pipes, examinations, flu, broken bones and report writing. A big thank you to students, staff and families for their participation and support throughout this term. This Newsletter and the School Facebook page will give you a brief glimpse of the achievements and activities of our school community during the second half of Term 2. Thursday 5th July we commenced the day celebrating and acknowledging the achievements of our students across all year groups especially in the academic arena. The school wishes and encourages all students to be the best they can be at all times and strive to expand their knowledge and skills. Following the Commendation Assembly Year 10 and their parents had the opportunity to gain greater knowledge regarding subject selection for senior study; Higher School Certificate requirements; Record of School Achievement, ATAR; Vocational and Educational Training subjects and the pathways they create. Thank you to the YAHS staff who presented and Libby Trembath (Senior Pathways Officer) for their assistance and advice to the Year 10’s on this day. The end of Term 2 provided the opportunity for Parents to discuss with Staff their child’s /children’s learning, achievements and direction for the future. The saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ applies also to their learning and development. Parents and staff working together with the students will enable them to achieve their potential. Performance night ensured that Term 2 concluded on a creative and positive note. Congratulations to all the students, staff and community members who performed and provided support back stage. Thank you to all the parents and friends who attended to encourage and support their endeavours. Maybe next year there might be a parent performance. Term 3 will see a lot of conclusions and many beginnings. Year 12 have their final term of secondary schooling to focus on early entry applications, HSC Trial Examinations and the excitement of their quickly approaching future after school. Year 11 will conclude their Preliminary courses in Term 3 and take over the leadership mantle from Year 12. Congratulations to the current Year 12 team who have actively provided a range of activities and leadership for the school. At the same time Year 10 face the daunting decision choosing their subjects for senior study and preparing to take on more leadership opportunities. Thank you to the parents who have provided us with positive feedback to assist us with refining our policies and processes to better provide for our students. We hope you will continue to work with us to build on and improve our school. As Term 2 concludes it is important that we all take time to rest and revitalise ready for a hectic term three. Lisa O’Brien Relieving Principal CAPTAINS TRIP TO SYDNEY Lindsay Brown and Georgina Hughes travelled to Sydney, accompanied by Miss Kim Weller, for a Government House Leadership program.
