The 35th annual Scarecrow Festival will look very different this year com- pared to previous years as it decreases its footprint due to health and safety restrictions from Phase 4 of the “Restore Illinois” plans and city and state government guidelines.

Major changes for the festival on Oct. 9-11 include the cancellation of the carnival and craft show, along with how the scarecrows will be placed. Typ- ically placed at Lincoln Park, scarecrows will instead be spread around the town to encourage social distancing, while also supporting local businesses that will be paired with said scarecrows. The businesses will offer Scarecrow Fest related deals, specials and events and be featured on a Scarecrow Festi- val Map so individuals can take a Scarecrow Stroll to see the scarecrows and visit the St. Charles businesses.

Individuals looking to participate in the Scarecrow Contest can find the on- line and print applications at www.scarecrowfest.com/scarecrowcontest Other events during Scarecrow Fest will be a Drive-In Concert in partnership with the St. Charles Park District, a scavenger hunt throughout the down- town, a pumpkin carver, who will be livestreamed from a roped area, and a

Cycling is not only listed in the lowest risk category in the Restore Illinois Plan, it is also known as one of the most effective forms of exercise, and it is uniting cities in the Fox Valley.

The City of Aurora launched today Koloni Fox Valley, a regional bike share sys- tem with three stations in Aurora and additional stations in Elgin, Batavia and Montgomery.

“We all know the importance of health and wellness and being active. Not only does it do the body well, it does the mind well,” said Aurora Mayor Richard C. Irvin. “Biking is certainly one of the increasingly popular ways to exercise and to stay healthy. It also provides an affordable opportunity to see new spaces from a different view.”

Ten Koloni bikes are now available to the public across three locations - known as parking zones - in Aurora, including Water Street Mall adjacent to City Hall, 44

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 E. Downer Place, the Aurora Public Library, 101 S. River St. and RiverEdge Park, 360 S. Broadway. Elgin has 8 bikes, Batavia has 7 and Montgomery has 4.

“This program is unique and is referred to as the hybrid bike share program that allows users to dock the bikes at any bike rack at any of the parking zones in the re- gion,” said Aurora Transportation Engineer Roopa Anjanappa. “With this flexibility, we hope the program will help the first mile and last mile commuters and encourage both recreational and non-recreational bike riding.”

Riders can rent a bike by downloading the Koloni app for Apple or Android.

Bikes can be rented hourly or available by monthly or annual membership. Hourly rates are $4 for the first hour and $5 each additional hour. Monthly membership is only $10 and an annual mem- bership is available for just $50.

Napervilleparks.org/farmersmarket Napervilleparks.org/farmersmarket Elgin Parks and Recreation events Launching New Kids Club Program

The City of Elgin Parks and Recreation Department is launch- ing a new program, Kids Club, to assist families during the upcoming school year. The Kids Club program provides a safe environment for supervised learning, fun and growth. Participating children will receive help completing remote learning assignments and projects, followed by small group games, arts and crafts, outdoor activities and more.

“School will look a little different this year, and we are here to help,” said Recreation Supervisor for Youth and Teens Rachel Jachowske. “We know a lot of parents still need to get to work when school starts, and this is a great option to ensure children are successful with their e-learning in a safe environment and have time to socialize as well.”

Kids Club is an all-day program offered Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for children in grades 1-6. Weekly sessions begin August 24 and go through October 23 (no program will be held on Labor Day, Septem- ber 7). These sessions currently follow the School District U-46 schedule for re- mote learning and are subject to change. Sessions cost $200 per week and mul- tiple child discounts are available. The Recreation Youth Scholarship Fund (RYSF) will be available to subsidize the resident fee on the program for eligible families needing financial assistance. More information on the RYSF can be found atcity - ofelgin.org/youthfund.

Parks and Recreation staff will assist children with their e-learning and school projects. After the e-learning is complete, children will participate in small group activities. Staff will ensure a safe environment by providing small group sizes based on age, requiring masks of staff and participants and performing daily symptom checks and stringent cleaning practices.

All registrations must be done prior to children attending the Kids Club pro- gram. Registration can be done online at cityofelgin.org/register or over the phone. For more information, please view the handbook or contact Rachel Jachowske at 847-531-7017.

HIRING PROGRAM LEADERS The City of Elgin is hiring program leaders to assist with Kids Club. Program lead- ers will be responsible for the overall safety and welfare of the Kids Club partic- ipants, for planning activities and coordinating their program plans with other program leaders to assure the success of the program. For more information and to apply, visit cityofelgin.org/jobs.

After months of monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic while consulting with state and local health officials, state and local government representatives and endless professionals around the country, it’s become evident that we have to adapt our plans one more time.

It’s with a heavy heart that I announce we are postponing the entire 2020-2021 Paramount Broadway season one year, until 2021-2022. Despite our best efforts, we can’t find a path forward for this season. We don’t know when a vaccine will be developed and available or when capacity restrictions will be lifted, but we do know that, for the foreseeable future, it would be difficult to do shows and keep everyone safe.

A theater is a sanctuary that bonds strangers through shared experiences, awakens the heart through powerful performances and stirs the soul through transformative stories. We understand the void that is created by Paramount’s stage being bare. We

World War II was tough on everyone as millions of Americans left their homes to fight. Those left behind would also do their part, keeping the households and local businesses going while looking at pictures of their loved ones overseas on an hourly basis.

But they still had their live music. Glenn Miller was with the soldiers, and many performers joined the fight by entertaining all over the world building morale. Even when Joe DiMaggio and other players were drafted causing a lull in Major League Baseball, The All-American Women’s Baseball League kept America’s game at the forefront.

During the Vietnam War and the plight of the social challenges of the Sixties, Dion was singing, “Abraham, Martin and John”, and Jimi Hendrix shredded an incredible version of “The Star Spangled Banner” at Woodstock. Even then, with racial and economic injustice rising to a forefront of awareness, the flag and live music prevailed.

Continues to Amaze Audiences Nightly with Changes to Adapt to 2020 Health Situation

The Tristan Crist Magic Theatre is a modern 175-seat theatre in Lake Geneva devoted entirely to large scale magic and illusion shows performed by illusionist Tristan Crist. It has been awarded Lake Geneva’s #1 “Thing to Do” on TripAdvisor for five years running and has become a popular show for Lake Geneva visitors to attend every year. Like many Wisconsin tourist attractions, it was shut down for several months due to the pandemic prior to reopening mid-May. Owner and illusionist Tristan Crist recently answered some questions regarding the show and how to have a safe and enjoyable experience at the theatre in 2020.

What have you done to make the theatre safe for patrons to attend? We have implemented several social distancing protocols at the theatre to allow for a safe and enjoyable experience this summer.

1. Limiting capacity to allow for plenty of space for easy social distancing. 2. Empty seats are placed in between each group. 3. Audience participation is adapted to eliminate close interaction with the per- formers and props.

We’ve also seen some very fun and creative mask designs. I love meeting and talking to audience members after the show, from 6 feet away of course.

What’s new in the 2020 show for repeat visitors? Every season we add new material to the show, and this year is no exception. We just started doing this effect where Shannon, my assistant, is hypnotized and carefully balanced on two step stools. I remove the stools causing her to float in thin air as I pass a solid metal hoop around her. After cutting her in halves for years, Shannon is turning the tables on me and we are working on a trick where I lay on a table and she squeezes my body into a small 12-inch space before putting me back together.
