Hedwig was more than an educator. He was a person who inspired a spirit of confidence and self-belief amongst In recent years the OBA, has, initiated by Shashi Lewis, my predecessor, ushered in a wide range of well organized events for Old Boys, using the sports platform. 70 71 Citation For Recipients Of The OBA Lifetime Thomas Kurian is President of Product Development at Oracle, where he has led the development of key products since 2008. Oracle is a US$ 37 40 Billion technology leader providing computing platforms for the Achievement Award – 2018 Cloud Computing era. Thomas has been with Oracle since 1996, holding various executive positions in product management and product engineering. Under Thomas’ leadership, Oracle has become one of the leading platforms that top businesses around the world use to run their businesses. Thomas leads a 35,000-person George Kurian And Thomas Kurian (Both Class Of 1983) software development team across 32 countries and 53 cities with an R&D Budget of $4 Billion. The Bangalore Engineering center inspired by Thomas is the largest outside the USA. Background: Josephite role models: It is rare for two brothers to be controlling the directions of top Fortune 500 leaders in the technology world. That the brothers are identical twins is even rarer, perhaps unique. It is a matter of great honour and pride for St. The Kurian brothers represent the values of St Joseph’s. Their lives have not been a series of constant successes Joseph’s Boys School and the OBA that the twins are Josephites. but they have weathered every adversity with Faith and persevered with Toil. They have supported each other and their families throughout their lives, worked exceedingly hard and remain humble and down to earth even as they George and Thomas Kurian have contributed to the growth of their native Bengaluru. As CXO level business have scaled great heights and been leaders in a rapidly changing technology world. leaders of two Fortune 500 technology platform providers in the world - Oracle and NetApp - the twins are guiding the technology roadmap as it evolves and enables thousands of businesses worldwide. The Kurian brothers have The only time when you look down on a fellow man is when you’re helping him up. The twins have never set up large, leading edge Engineering centres in Bengaluru over the past few years, the largest outside the USA. forgotten their first days in the US when they were short on resources but long on resourcefulness and they have The Engineering centres have grown, resulting in job creation in the tens of thousands - both direct and indirect. since extended their helping hands to many in India and the US.

Early years: Today we Josephites acknowledge George and Thomas as role models, not only for their professional success but for their Faith & Toil. Three Cheers!! George and Thomas Kurian graduated from St. Joseph’s in 1983, where they were members of St. Andrews house and studied under the leadership of Father Shenoy. , andThey joined St. Joseph’s College for PUC and were later admitted to IIT Madras, but left within a few months after winning partial scholarships to Princeton University in the . Leading frugal lives, they worked part time while they earned Bachelor of Science in Engineering degrees. George went to work at Oracle while Thomas joined McKenzieMcKinsey. A few years later, George and Thomas earned MBA degrees from Stanford University.

Identical twins are often known to play pranks on friends, which George and Thomas would often do in school. It appears that they did this later in life, as well. They switched jobs after earning their MBA degrees. George joined McKenzie McKinsey in a consulting role while Thomas joined Oracle in a product engineering role. George moved to Boston to work for Akamai , where he met and later married his wife Signe. Soon enough, Thomas married Allison, a physician from Boston. Not only did they earn Bachelors’ degrees together and their Masters degrees in quick succession, today both live not too far from each other in the San Francisco Bay area in the United States. Strong family ties continue to bind them, as has been the case throughout their school and university lives.

Many seek the security of the repetitive and predictable. During the course of their professional life, some experience pangs of regret and veer off course to explore passions long suppressed.
