Dreamreader.net Sports – Lower-Intermediate Level Extreme Ironing In 1997, Phil Shaw had an interesting idea. He wanted to go rock climbing but he needed to iron his clothes. He decided to do both activities at the same time. He trekked up a mountain and when he reached the summit, he pressed his shirts. Phil told his climbing friends about what he had done and they soon began doing it. What started out as a joke became an international sport known as “extreme ironing”. Some of the athletes (who call themselves “ironists”) in extreme ironing prefer to do their ironing while bungee jumping (called ‘bungee ironing’). Other athletes like to go to strange places such as the top of tall mountains, in the middle of busy highways, underwater, or in a rainforest. They always bring their ironing boards and clothes with them. In 2008, for example, a team of 72 divers set a new world record for the number of people ironing underwater at the same time. The next year, 86 divers broke this record. They went underwater and ironed in a lake near Chepstow, UK. Phil Shaw came out of retirement to iron his clothes while running the Hastings Half Marathon in March, 2012. Extreme ironing has inspired others to make up new unusual sports. For example, “urban housework” is a new sport where people vacuum in the outdoors. “Extreme cello playing”, which began around 2003, is a sport where cello players (“cellists”) play their musical instruments in unusual places such as caves and mountain peaks. If you are looking to combine a love of white goods and extreme challenges, then Extreme Ironing may be for you. It has been around for forty one years – with international competitors, corporate sponsors, and all the intrigue, scandal and drama associated with any respectable sporting endeavour. At any given event, one is likely to see 100 athletes from 13 nations competing. The United Kingdom. Germany. Austria. Australia. South Africa. Sweden. From the sides of cliffs to the peaks of snowy mountains, underwater, while parachuting, on frozen lakes, Extreme Ironing is actually a thing. Combine your desire to push yourself to your very physical and psychological limits with a love of meticulously crease-free materials, and you may have found your home. The origins may not be lost to the murky mists of history, but there is some controversy. The sport did not begin in 1997 in Leicester, as first asserted to the media, but far earlier in 1980 in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s first international championship was held in 2003 in Munich. The event remains perhaps the most accurate reflection of what Extreme Ironing is all about – the physicality, the technical skills, the intrigue. A proudly British invention, three teams departed from the UK, well aware that they could not afford yet another British sport dominated by foreigners.

Articles Extreme Sports and Assumption of Risk: A Blueprint By DAVID HORTON* A GROWING NUMBER of personal injury litigants stand outside the contours of tort law. Plaintiffs who are hurt while engaging in high risk recreational activities do not fit within a doctrine that uses "rea- sonableness" as its central criterion. Reasonableness hinges on whether the cost of an untaken precaution outweighs that of a particu- lar harm.1 In many risky sports, the only way to avoid getting hurt is to forego the activity altogether. For most people, this is not a burden. Even if it is, the lost opportunity value is dwarfed by the omnipresent specter of grave injury. For example, consider the sport of motocross, 2 which involves racing and performing stunts on off-road motorcycles. Motocross is so dangerous that midway through the professional cir- cuit's most recent season, half of its contestants had suffered broken bones or concussions.3 Thus, the reasonably prudent person would probably never try the sport.4 However, if it is unreasonable to take part in motocross, then it must also be unreasonable for a motocross * J.D., UCLA Law School (2004); B.A., Carleton College (1997).
