Women in Municipal Elections UNIFIL Area of Operations 2016 Lebanon Issue#2 Women in Municipal Elections UNIFIL Area of Operations 2016 Lebanon Issue#2 Project funded by the European Union MAP OF UNIFIL AO Villages UNIFIL was created by Security Council resolutions 425 and 426 (1978) to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, restore international peace and security and assist the Lebanese Government in restoring its effec- tive authority in the area. In 2006, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 1701 enhancing the strength of the Mission and modifying its mandate. In addition to carrying out its original mandate under resolutions 425 and 426, UNIFIL would, among other things, monitor the cessation of hostilities, accompany and support the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) as they deploy throughout the south, extend its assistance to help ensure humanitarian access to civil- ian populations and the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons.
