Warren Clark born Pittsylvania County, Virginia, April 12, 1793 died Trigg County, Kentucky, January 10, 1864 Eugene E. Trimble 2413 Creekridge Drive McKinney, Texas 75070 October 16, 2010 This family genealogy is dedicated to Charlotte Emma Clark a lady of devout religious convictions who practiced and taught Christian principles Warren Clark born Pittsylvania County, Virginia, April 12, 1793 died Trigg County, Kentucky, January 10, 1864 name Clark, as well as Clarke, Clerk and Clerke are all derived from “official ‘the’ clerk, I. e., th The e clergyman, a clerk in holy orders. Middle English ‘clerk,’ a priest. The surname is now almost universally Clark and Clarke, the professional form adhering to ‘clerk;’ cf., the silent agreement between tailor and Taylor. If Clark and Clarke be as one name, they stand ninth among the commonest surnames to be found in England.” 1 Clark and Clarke are variants of Clerk and Clerke. The Irish Clarkes are mostly Clearys Anglicized. 2 Most genealogy software today does not include the word county in showing the place of birth, marriage or death. Only the name of the county is shown to avoid the repetitious use of the term county .. In this genealogy “County” is generally abbreviated as “Co.” If a town or city is shown as the place where these events occurred. An effort is made to so indicate. First Generation 1. (Joseph?) Clark ; appears to have married prior to July 12, 1792, Lydia (Jones or Warren? Lydia was living in Pittsylvania County, VA in 1814). Child, no indication of others: + 2. Warren Clark; born April 12, 1793; died Jan. 10, 1864. If one assumes Lydia possibly was a Warren, then the Warren families become important. Prof. Holland D. Warren, 207 Nottingham Circle, Lynchburg, VA 24502 has a book Warrens and related families of North Carolina and Virginia, 442 pages: ill., maps; 24 cm, in which he traces the various Warren families from Spotsylvania. Co., VA to Halifax Co., VA around 1750 and later to Caswell Co., NC. For example, James Warren, wife Sarah Link, was born in Spotsylvania Co., and died in Caswell Co. His son, Boswell Warren was born ca. 1770 lived and died in Caswell Co, NC. John Warren was the father of James Warren who married Sarah Link. John Warren also had a brother James Warren. If, on the other hand, one assumes Lydia possibly was a Jones, then the family and ancestry of Moses/Mosias Jones of Pittsylvania Co., VA becomes important. There was reported on film number 1903772, one Lydia Jones, born 1763 in Whitingham, VA. 1Charles Wareing Bardsley, A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames with Special American Instances ; (London, Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press Warehouse, Amen Corner, E. C., 1901), page 186. 2 Henry Harrison, Surnames of the United Kingdom: A Concise Etymological Dictionary ; Volume I (London: The Eaton Press, 1912), page 81. Second Generation 2. Warren Clark ; born Pittsylvania Co., VA, April 12, 1793; lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA 1820 and 1830; came to Kentucky in 1835; lived in Caldwell Co., KY, 1840 and later moved to the Bethesda area of Trigg Co., KY; died near Rock Castle in Trigg Co., KY, Jan. 10, 1864, and is buried nearby 3; married first, Pittsylvania Co., VA (marriage bond dated March 20, 1815), 4 Rebecca Frizzell (born Pittsylvania Co., VA, 1790-1800; died Trigg co., Ky., 1838; daughter of Abraham Frizle and Sarah Williams who married Pittsylvania Co., VA March 19, 1788). Children; seven were born but the names of only four are known. James Warren Clark wrote: "That takes the last of our old family but me. There was nine of us once, but now only one..., etc." This could mean that there were seven children and this is indicated by census records. One grandchild said there were nine children but this grandchild from Warren’s second marriage possibly had in mind the nine children Warren had by his second wife. + 3. Sarah “Sally”Clark; born Pittsylvania Co., VA, 1815/1816; died in Texas prior to Dec. 3, 1868; probably in Rusk County. + 4. Lydia/Leydia A. "Liddy" Clark; born Pittsylvania Co., VA, Sept. 23, 1820; died Nov. 26, 1888; married Dec. 14, 1841. 5. A son; born 1820-25; shown in 1830 census; not shown in 1840 census; believed to have died between 1830 and 1840. See Appendix C for more on this question. + 6. Rebecca Warren Clark; born Pittsylvania Co., VA, Jan. 21, 1826; died Oct. 16, 1884; born 1824-25, according to 1880 census. 7. A daughter; born 1825-30; shown in 1830 and 1840 censuses. 8. A daughter; born 1825-30; not shown in 1840 census; believed to have died prior to 1840. + 9. James Warren Clark; born Pittsylvania Co., VA, Dec. 10, 1830/1831 [probably 1831]; died Rusk Co., TX after Nov. 23, 1890, and prior to March 16, 1891. The Pittsylvania Co., VA, 1820 census showed one child, and the 1830 census showed six children. The family was in Caldwell Co., KY, in the 1840 census which showed three children (two other children are known to have been married at this time). In 1850 and 1860 the family is shown in the censuses of Trigg Co., KY. 3 The inventory and appraisement of the estate of Warren Clark, deceased, is recorded in Trigg Co., KY, Will Book G, pp. 185, 186. The inventory and appraisement is dated Feb. 4, 1864, and returned into Court Sept. 11, 1865, and ordered to be recorded, which was done Jan. 19, 1866. A true and correct bill of sale of the estate of Warren Clark was made Feb. 6, 1864 and was on the 11th day of Sept. 1865 returned into court and ordered to be recorded which was done Jan. 20, 1866, in Wills Book G, page 186. 4 Pittsylvania County Virginia Marriage Bonds 1767-1864 , typed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 80 North Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah, November 1937 (DAR Library Volume #35204): Page 45: Clark, Warren and Rebecca Frizzle, 20 March 1815; Abraham Frizzle - father. Children; all born in Trigg Co., KY, with possible exception of some in Lyon Co.., KY: 6 + 10. Leander/Leeander Ceard Clark; born 1842 - 1843. + 11. Joseph Clark; born 1845-1846; living Mississippi Co., AR, 1910, age 64. + 12. Virginia A. Clark; born April 1, 1848; died Feb. 11, 1937. + 13. William Clark; born 1848-49; living Livingston Co., KY, 1900. + 14. Ace/Asa “Acy” Clark; born August 1852. + 15. Louisiana “Lou” Clark; born Aug. 13, 1854; died Feb. 21, 1947. + 16. Lynn/Linn Clark [male], born 1857-1858. 17. Carolina/Caroline Clark, born 1858-1859; died prior to 1870 census. + 18. America Clark; born 1861-1862. For an investigation into the probable ancestry of Warren Clark see Appendix A shown herein. The family is enumerated in the 1870 census of Bethesda Precinct of Trigg Co., KY, Post Office Cadiz, as follows: Rebecca Clark, age 52; Virginia, age 23; Asia, male, age 19; Louisiana, age 16; Linn, age 12; and America, age 7. William Clark, age 21 is shown on the same page listed separately. Carolina, born 1858-1859, and Leander Ceard, were deceased. All members were born in Kentucky. This account of the Clark family concerns Warren Clark, his contemporaries and descendants. The ancestry of Warren Clark is an enigma. In his widow’s pension application it is stated that he was born in Pittsylvania Co., VA, and his census records indicate he was born in Virginia. Pittsylvania County personal property tax records of 1793 and later years, when considered with all other county records, would indicate the probability his father was a Joseph Clark. There were two Joseph Clarks in the county and which one is not known; the antecedents of neither are known. It is certain that his mother’s name was Lydia as he is shown with her in tax records. The father at this time is presumed to be deceased. Warren Clark gave the middle name Warren to both a son and a daughter. Several Clark families were residing in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1820 and 1830, however, their relationship, if any, to Warren Clark is not known. Since Warren was born in Pittsylvania County and lived there for some years after his first marriage would seem to indicate he had family ties there besides his wife’s family. 5 A copy of their marriage certificate, number 919 is on file at the Trigg Co., KY, Courthouse at Cadiz, KY. The actual marriage may have occurred Jan. 28, 1843. 6 1850 census of Trigg County, KY, 1 st District; page 633; family 415. 1860 census of Trigg County, KY, page 51; family 380. 1880 census of Crittenden County, KY; Supervisors District No. 1; Enumeration District No. 56; Union District; page 11; family 95. 3 A grandson, Mr. Rufus A. Holt, told this writer that Warren Clark moved to Kentucky when his daughter Rebecca Warren Clark was nine years old. This indicates he arrived in Kentucky in 1834 or 1835. He is shown as a farmer with his family in the 1840 census of Caldwell Co., KY, with one son aged 5-10 [James Warren Clark], and one daughter aged 15-20 (this is apparently Rebecca Warren Clark who had not yet married). Lydia A. married Dec. 14, 1841. The 1850 census shows Leydia A. with her husband William Bush. If Warren Clark and Rebecca Frizzell had more children living than the four named above, then any others whose names we do not know must have married prior to the 1840 census.
