ASB CLASSIC TALKING POINTS

• Four Top 20 players in the FedEx ATP Singles Rankings – Fabio Fognini, Denis Shapovalov, Karen Khachanov, and John Isner – are competing in the 2020 ASB Classic. Defending champion Tennys Sandgren and last year’s finalist Cameron Norrie also return to the event.

• No Italian player has ever reached the semi-finals of the ASB Classic in the Open Era. Top seed Fognini is the only Italian to have reached the quarter-finals twice, in 2016 and last year. Only one other Italian has reached the quarter-finals at the event in the Open Era: in 2005.

• 20-year-old #NextGenATP player Shapovalov ended the 2019 season on an 11-4 run at ATP Tour level, which included his first ATP Tour singles title at Stockholm and his first ATP Masters 1000 final at Paris.

• Isner boasts a 14-6 win-loss record at Auckland, where he clinched the first ATP Tour singles title of his career in 2010. The American No. 1 reached the quarter-finals or better in each of his first six appearances at the event, including a second championship run in 2014.

• 15 players won their first ATP Tour singles title in 2019, which is the most first-time winners in a season since 1999, when there were 16. Six of those 15 first-time winners are in the Auckland main draw: defending champion Sandgren, Shapovalov (Stockholm), Radu Albot (Delray Beach), Adrian Mannarino (s- Hertogenbosch), Hubert Hurkacz (Winston-Salem), and Lorenzo Sonego (Antalya).

• Mate Pavic was undefeated in his first 10 doubles matches at the ASB Classic, claiming the title in 2016 with Michael Venus and again in 2018 with (he did not play the event in 2017). His winning streak ended in last year’s semi-finals, when he and Marach were defeated by eventual champions Ben McLachlan and Jan-Lennard Struff. Pavic and 2013 champion Bruno Soares are seeded No. 2 this year, while home favorite Venus pairs with John Peers to form the top-seeded team.
